US President Donald Trump has announced tariffs on all goods coming from Mexico in a bid to curb illegal immigration. In a tweet, Mr Trump said that from 10 June a 5% tariff would be imposed and would slowly rise "until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied".

I wonder if this affects his much ballyhooed new trade agreement with Mexico?

Or was that fake news?

Making our citizens pay more for stuff? That's part of his reelection strategy? Good one. Keep it up.

I thought the wall he started building on Jan 20, 2017 with full support of the GOP Congress was supposed to fix that.

Why didn't it?

I like how Trump's way of solving American's illegal immigration "problem" is to make it Mexico's problem.

Do conservative people really not see the problem with this?

According to UN refugee rules, it actually is the problem of the first border that the refugees cross in fleeing their country...so according to the UN it is Mexico's problem.

Well, this move will go down as another of Trump's worse attacks on American consumers.

Guess who pays for these tariffs? You and I, the American consumers.

Is Trump purposely trying to put our economy into recession? Seems like that's his intention.

Tariffs are weird. They enjoy bipartisan support AND condemnation and this is something that goes back more than a century. Personally, I oppose tariffs as I think they cause more economic harm than benefit.

The fact Trump is levying tariffs (China, now Mexico) under the guise of a 'national emergency' should trouble everyone.

It WILL be a national emergency when the economy goes in the tank.

Detroit will be especially hard hit.

AU,

My biggest gripe is where does the Executive derive the power to simply impose tariffs?

Hawley-Smoot was a creation of congress, it wasn't a whim of the Executive.

I must be missing something as I have yet to see this discussed.

We have a Unitary, aka Royal, Executive.

President Donald Trump said he will impose a 5% tariff on Mexican goods, taking effect on June 10, if the country does not stop immigrants from illegally entering the U.S. The White House warned that the levy could rise as high as 25% by Oct. 1 if the issue is not remedied. The Mexican peso weakened by as much as 3% as investors mull the long list of goods that would be hit by the move. It all dims the prospect of a trade deal with China as the president shows he is willing to arbitrarily impose punitive trade measures.

Only in a world where you believe Globalist finance theory. In the real world, it is not easy to pass on cost increases to consumers or you lose sales or marketshare. At a minimum, a portion will be eaten by the manufacturer. The rest, will be paid by people that choose to buy products not produced in the US. The tax is entirely avoidable. The funny thing is that the low income Dems will probably be the ones that continue with their current purchasing habits - so, the Dems and Mexico pay for the wall. With a 5% rising to 25% tariff, we will pay for the wall 10x over if we keep this in place. Dem screaming is hitting a fevered pitch.

IRAGOLDBERG. Think a little harder.

The market just changed.

Trump changed it during a 3am bathroom trip instigated by an undercooked big mac.

In the real world, like you want to talk about, the price of everything just increased.

So

What's a good CEO gunna do?

Raise their own prices too.

That's called capitalism.

You sell your product for as much as you can.

The funny part is how Trump sets June 10th as deadline which guarantees Mexico has no real chance to do anything of substance.

Trump insists on tanking just about anything that could even be characterized as "progress" or "accomplishment." He's a rodeo clown whose sole purpose is to destabilize and weaken the US.

Thanks, Republicans.

Is that how it worked with China?

Congress needs to pull their heads from their asses. Trump can only unilaterally impose tariffs on issues relating to national security. Economic policy is not "national security," this is not what Congress intended when they made this exception and someone needs to do something about it.

You're incapable of nuance, so I won't bother explaining why that doesn't mean Trump can unilaterally impose tariffs on any country that borders us.

It won't do that, and you know it, Andrea, a mattress.

And even if it did, you don't think the Illegals Immigration problem will be solved with remittances.

You think it will be solved with mass roundups into massive camps, where illegal immigrants await mass deportations.

Wait to you see prices skyrocket at your local grocery store since most if not all our winter produce comes from mexico. Ridiculous to think companies are going to eat the costs of tariffs and not pass them on to the consumer. And really it's a tax levied on consumers which transfers the wealth to the government for whatever handouts they want to pursue.
