Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Nike canceled Monday's launch of its new limited edition USA-themed Air Max 1 sneaker for the Fourth of July holiday after criticism that it featured an early American flag that some white nationalists have adopted.

White nationalists? That's not the original story. It's the connection to "an era of slavery".

www.wsj.com

"After images of the shoe were posted online, Mr. Kaepernick, a Nike endorser, reached out to company officials saying that he and others felt the Betsy Ross flag is an offensive symbol because of its connection to an era of slavery, the people said. "

And here's the reaction so far from critics:

Laura Ingraham Boycotts Nike After It Pulls ‘Betsy Ross Flag' Sneakers

Arizona governor pulls state money for Nike plant over "Betsy Ross flag" sneaker-Colin Kaepernick report

The blowback to Nike's decision to pull Betsy Ross American flag sneakers didn't take long. Arizona Governor Doug Ducey on Tuesday said he's rescinding financial incentives recently offered to the maker of athletic shoes to build a $185 million plant and bring 500 jobs to the state.

Good job Governor. Undercut investment and jobs in your own state to stand strong in support of white supremacist's talismans!

Nike responded to what they perceive as their market for a fairly obvious reason. Many Americans feel rather strongly that using a symbol which celebrates a time in our history when certain Americans were then considered property and politically valued at 3/5ths may not quite be a fantastic way of honoring Independence Day in 2019 under the presidency of Donald J. Trump.

In my opinion, they wouldn't be wrong.

From 2016 about complaints during a football game:

Patulski said the "Betsy Ross" flag has become, at least to some, a symbol co-opted by white supremacy groups involved in an effort broadly called the "patriot movement."

That's not the original story.

It is part of the original story. The msm did not flesh out the details before they reported. Do you really think that Kaep is unaware that nationalists utilize the Ross flag too? The facts predate the story. It's called a through-line.

A 2018 story by The Outline noted the flag was on display in the home of a member of white nationalist group Identity Evropa.

In 2016, students at a high school in Grand Rapids, Michigan, displayed the Betsy Ross flag along with a Trump campaign flag. The students' school superintendent later apologized to parents.

"To wave a historical version of our flag, that to some symbolizes exclusion and hate, injects hostility and confusion to an event where no one intended to do so," the apology said, MLive.com reported at the time.

From late 2017:

When an envelope addressed to the "Campus Student Media Group" appeared in The Wire's mailbox, it had a stamp in place of a return address. The stamp read "Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan" along with a logo of a hooded figure on a rearing horse holding a cross, with the confederate and Betsy Ross flags in the background.

I disagree with the notion that this flag "celebrates a time in our history when certain Americans were then considered property."

It was the flag of America. It represented the 13 colonies. It was a symbol of our virgin nation. It had nothing to do with slavery except slaves existed during this time period.

If it were the confederate flag I would agree. It would be weird for Nike to use that symbol.

But it's not.

A handful of intolerant idiots flying this flag shouldn't taint its significance.

This flag is the flag of the United States. The only difference between that one and today's flag is the number of stars on it.

#41 | Posted by schmanch at 2019-07-03 07:04 AM | Reply

I care little about what decoration is on the shoe, especially anything considered to be patriotic. Shoes can't be patriotic, they're just f*****g shoes. I do care about where those "patriotic shoes" were manufactured. That should be the focus of this debate. What if every NBA player, NFL player, MLB player said they would only wear uniforms and shoes manufactured here in the U.S. and that any sponsor who wants their logo on those uniforms and shoes has to agree to manufacture all of their goods here? That would mean something but debating which flag should be displayed on a Chinese shoe is just the height of stupidity.
Americans need a symbol like a logo which, by law, can only be put on products actually made here. It should be very visible and a source of pride for the owners of those products. We should start disdaining those who buy Chinese goods, embarrassing them, ridiculing them, calling them unpatriotic. That is the only way we will get American manufacturing back because, we can all see, our politicians will never do it for us. We have to do it for our children and their children. If you wait for corporate America to do it you will wait forever and it will never happen.

I was both impressed and upset by Kaepernick's kneeling.

Sort of like Kayne West's comment about Bush not caring about black people.

On the mark and painfully true.

However just like West, Kaepernick is having his Taylor Swift moment.

Off the mark and saying look at me.

It appears Kaepernick is trying to position himself as the next Al Sharpton.

That is disappointing because I was so hoping when Sharpton is gone maybe, just maybe, blacks would get over the past and stop with this victim routine.

Oh no...Kaepernick has too much to gain by putting himself in the spotlight.

Is that what happened? Wasn't Kapernick shunned by the NFL in several instances for this kneeling? You're thinking that the NFL represents morals and virtue? I find the NFL a corporate parasite. Michael Vick was worth bringing back in their determination. He "served" his social dues in their view. NFL administration are sociopath at minimum, but incapable of resisting doing whatever they believe is in their monetary interests, regardless it's immorality and ethical failings. That's what the players are. Not heroes. Not "good people" but staff to an unethical industry that gives lip service to equality before every single game. One employee got fed up and publicly humiliated his bosses.

Ha ha

Re--sing to cooperate with injustice is some awesome kung --! Though in reality it is more like Tai Chi.

Civil Disobedience is NOT the same as turning the other cheek.

While in jail, Gandhi read the essay "Civil Disobedience" by Henry David Thoreau, a 19th-century American writer. Gandhi adopted the term "civil disobedience" to describe his strategy of non-violently re--sing to cooperate with injustice, but he preferred the Sanskrit word satyagraha (devotion to truth). Following his release from jail, he continued to protest the registration law by supporting labor strikes and organizing a massive non-violent march. Finally, the Boer government agreed to a compromise that ended the most objectionable parts of the registration law.

"devotion to truth"

You may have to have someone explain how that works to you.

Your question was, "What if you just want to play football, like Colin Kaepernick?"

I answered in jest.

Your question wasn't, "What if you want to play football and champion a cause, like Colin Kaepernick?"

Then you'd have to either play on a team that supports your cause, buy your own team, or play recreationally and not worry about repercussions for your actions.

You are only considering the monetary aspect of "parasite", which is no different from NFL administration. The ETHICAL QUALITY of their decision is what I consider corrosive and parasitic to anyone who wants to enjoy the game.

"Michael Vick was worth bringing back in their determination. He "served" his social dues in their view.:

I'm not certain what that means. I do not want Vick on any team, ever again. Do you realize what he was doing? With whom and for how long? What are the conditions that he was butchering these pets? Why?

Jesus, dude. He had a house behind his house just to host these events.

What kind of "service" did he provide to society in "compensation"? Why does that change how to view his past with dogs?

Why does the NFL look past the horrors so readily? Isn't bringing Vick back a monetary decision, or are they trying to "give Michael a break"? OR, is this to generate drama, "sticking it to the libs"?

I do not believe that Ghandi supported violence towards his opponents... however, it did happen and Ghandi did not avoid violence toward himself or his followers.

Gandhi said that the nonviolent activist, like any soldier, had to be ready to die for the cause. And in fact, during India's struggle for independence, hundreds of Indians were killed by the British.

The difference was that the nonviolent activist, while willing to die, should never be willing to harm or kill (that does not mean it never happened and no one was killed as Human Beings were involved in this struggle and it was a very violent struggle... and Gandhi was not a Saint... he was Human Being).

But back to the whole sneaker thing.

I admired him for taking a kneel after I saw just what it accomplished. But what good can come out of this sneaker thing?

His letter to Nike about the awful flag that was on the back of shoes is denigrating those people who endured hardship so this country could exist. I see it just as an opportunity to put his name in the news.

What good could come out of that? What does he think? Americans should start insulting the history of America because he hates it here?

I see more of a trend now.

Matthew 25:31-46 English Standard Version (ESV)
The Final Judgment
31 "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers,[a] you did it to me.'

Snoofy,

I am well aware of this history of slavery.

I visited Monticello a couple of summers ago and was shocked the way the tour-guides constantly ran down Thomas Jefferson as if he did nothing worthwhile.

From what I've read he treated his slaves far more humanely than they would have gotten from most other owners but he got no credit for it.

This attempt to erase history and ruin historical figures names will eventually fail.

#141 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2019-07-03 08:26 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

Recognizing the significance of America on this planet does not apologize for or attempt to justify the fact people owned slaves.

It just is what it is. We all know it happened and most people realize slavery existed all over this planet and wasn't a good thing.

Slavery has been discussed over and over and at some point Americans just have to leave it alone and move forward.

The basic core of Christianity is about forgiveness, since people on this thread have decided to bring Christianity into the conservation.

At some point blacks will just need to forgive and move on if their leaders will let them.

But it's in their leaders best interest to never let the wounds heal.

That is very unfortunate.

I hope for the best future of this country and all people who chose to make America their home and see themselves as Americans and not just foreigners who happen to live in America.

Actually she did the opposite, Amazon wanted tax exemptions for hundreds of millions to get them to choose NY as a place to put one of their headquarters offices, she said no. She did the right thing, she will be rewarded for choosing to put her district before Amazon. We should have a federal law outlawing corporations from bargaining with cities to gain tax exemptions.
Realize, this is what happened to Ireland, the Irish would starve on a productive nation because English owners had bought all the land. There are many thousands of New Yorkers who would have been displaced had she not prevented Amazon from entering the market there and made it unaffordable for all who had lived there for generations. As in....San Francisco. Sometimes you can't prevent gentrification but you don't have to pay for it with tax exemptions.

To quote the code:

(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.
(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

Any person who shall manufacture, sell, expose for sale, or to public view, or give away or have in possession for sale, or to be given away or for use for any purpose, any article or substance being an article of merchandise, or a receptacle for merchandise or article or thing for carrying or transporting merchandise, upon which shall have been printed, painted, attached, or otherwise placed a representation of any such flag, standard, colors, or ensign, to advertise, call attention to, decorate, mark, or distinguish the article or substance on which so placed shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine not exceeding $100 or by imprisonment for not more than thirty days, or both, in the discretion of the court. The words 'flag, standard, colors, or ensign', as used herein, shall include any flag, standard, colors, ensign, or any picture or representation of either, or of any part or parts of either, made of any substance or represented on any substance, of any size evidently purporting to be either of said flag, standard, colors, or ensign of the United States of America or a picture or a representation of either, upon which shall be shown the colors, the stars and the stripes, in any number of either thereof, or of any part or parts of either, by which the average person seeing the same without deliberation may believe the same to represent the flag, colors, standard, or ensign of the United States of America.

HMMM sounds like anything that can be identified as a US Flag or represents it is illegal
