International relations so often amount to a dialogue of the deaf, with the contending powers knowing next to nothing about each other. After my decade in Washington, I fully accept foreign criticisms regarding America's breezy insularity from the rest of the world. But this dangerous ignorance works both ways. In the decades I have lived away from the US, I must admit to finding the leaders of the rest of world equally (and often proudly) ignorant of the history, culture and way of life of the most powerful country in the world. This ignorance about America can presently be seen in the Iranian government's ham-fisted efforts at nuclear blackmail....

It is abundantly clear that Iran's recent abrogation of its nuclear deal is at base a power play designed to leverage terrified Europeans into open defiance of the Trump administration's policy of "maximum pressure," and the surprisingly effective sanctions that have disrupted the already-creaking Iranian economy.

For all Tehran's diplomatic subtlety, this is a gambit doomed to failure due to a fundamental lack of understanding of how the present transatlantic relationship, Trump's America, and even modern capitalism, actually work.

It is certainly an understatement to say that the Trump administration would win no popularity contests in any European capital. Saying that, for all the friction, very few European leaders see any real alternative -- given their obvious relative decline -- to a continued alliance with the US.

Even in the highly unlikely event the Europeans managed to create a unified stance to challenge Trump over his Iran policy, it is astronomically unlikely that the White House would blink.

Perhaps the United States should put sanctions on Pakistan until they give up their nuclear weapons. Drive their economy into the toilet. I suspect we might get cooperation from some of Pakistan's biggest neighbors. A s******e nation like Pakistan should not have nukes, they aren't responsible enough to have such weapons.

Perhaps the United States should put sanctions on Pakistan until they give up their nuclear weapons.

Tried that. Didn't work.

In the words of Collin Powell... "they have been sanctioned up to their eyeballs".

Did not work. LOL

Drive their economy into the toilet.

Tried that.

Did not work.

we might get cooperation from some of Pakistan's biggest neighbors.

Tried THAT too!

Did not work.

Pakistan should not have nukes

She yelled out the back window of her trailer....

they aren't responsible enough to have such weapons.

Sure as hell more responsible with nukes than the US....

Either way, the nukes are here to stay. AND the arsenal keeps on increasing. According to the BBC, Pakistan has more nukes now than the UK.. (gulp)... LOL

And let me tell you one more thing (even though this thread is about Iran...).... at some point, Trump will BEG to talk to Pakistan and try and be pals again.

Because that's the way Trump... and all Republicans... operate.

This is why ALL Pak-Americans vote Republican. LOL

Dems are poison.

Dems are Americans who haven't sold their souls. Pakistanis are pathetic dupes of their leaders, what do they get out of the deal? Poverty?
Wait a minute, what am I doing. I don't post in Tremain threads. Momentary lapse in judgement. Won't happen again. The level of b.s. is just too high on so many topics.

How can you talk about Pakistan's success with nukes while posting that Iran will fail? Do you disagree with the author of this piece?

what do they get out of the deal?

WHAT deal????

There is no deal between Pakistan and US.

There WAS a deal between USA and Iran... which Trump BROKE.

Are you drunk???

I don't post in Tremain threads.

You ALWAYS do ... after saying you never will.

Won't happen again.

I am sure it will.

If you had any discipline, you wouldn't be living in a trailer. LOL

The level of b.s.

Is ZERO.

Because I wasn't raised like you were, who grew up in a world of B.S.

Whatever I say... every time... can be checked by Google. Whatever YOU say is just emotional garbage and crocodile tears and some frustration mixed in for good measure.

How can you talk about Pakistan's success with nukes while posting that Iran will fail?

Easily.

Do you disagree with the author of this piece?

I agree with him 200%.

The article is cogently written.

Here is a hint for you.

Watch:

youtu.be

Understand?

Iran is a dog that's got rabies. Nobody wants to talk to it or help it in any way possible. It has managed to piss off every last one of it's neighbors. NOBODY wants a govt run by bloody mullahs next door.

America considers it low hanging fruit. And their military is a joke. So what if they managed to blow up a drone? They used a BUK missile system for that from Russia... just gave it an Iranian paint job and name. Make nice with Putin and he will stop Iran's weapons.

Pakistan... however much some Americans might hate it... was never isolated, was never alone and will never be alone.

All that changes with a nuke. Look at what Trump will eat out of Un's ----.

All that changes with a nuke.

Iran is not capable of making a nuke.

You need a certain threshold of science and a certain amount of industry in your country.

Iran has neither.

It does make fuel. But that fuel is made by centrifuges it stole from Pakistan.. a very early design.

Unless it manages to steal something else ... a lot more... it's not getting a nuke.

#11 | Posted by J_Tremain at 2019-07-06 10:38 AM | Reply

You don't create science by yelling "death to America" and by beating up little girls playing with water pistols.

Iran's only exports are (apart from the oil it can't sell) pista (pistachio) and carpets. And a loud voice.

Good luck making a nuke. LOL

#12 | Posted by J_Tremain at 2019-07-06 10:41 AM | Reply

And even if it CAN make a nuke then:

1. It can't do it in secret. Not any more.

2. It will have to demonstrate it's nuke immediately. anyway. It can't build an arsenal in secret and test one and say "we got 2 dozen more where that came from".

Iran will be attacked the very next day. If not by USA then by Israel. And then by USA to stop Israel. LOL

And of course the Saudis will pay the bill.

Iran to begin enriching uranium beyond 3.67 percent 'in a few hours': official

Iran said on Sunday it was set to breach the uranium enrichment cap set by an endangered nuclear deal within hours as it seeks to press signatories into keeping their side of the bargain.

The move – involving purifying beyond the 3.67 percent allowed by the 2015 agreement – comes despite opposition from the European Union and the United States, which has quit the deal.

President Hassan Rouhani's order to exceed the threshold would be implemented "in a few hours" after the last technical details were sorted, Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation spokesperson Behrouz Kamalvandi said live on state television.

Iran ought to further arm itself. USA under Trump has proven itself to be an incoherent and untrustworthy negotiating partner, and Israel with Netanyahoo is always itching to send American troops to their grave to further Israeli geopolitical ambitions.

Would you prescribe the same policy positions against Israel?
