Women's soccer?

Let's see a real sport, like women championship cooking and cleaning marathons. Bonus points for the one who births a baby mid cook.

Its interesting that only the giant USA and small European nations are consistent winners in this competition. Could be a measure of which countries in the world value women.

Only countries which value women are competitive in this event. The giant US has to fight hard to compete with tiny European countries. No one else in the world are even contenders.

I agree with this, if by "value" you mean a value in which the individual has the freedom to do as one chooses. Yet American women believe they are the most oppressed in the world.

That's some good hyperbole right there.

American women wanting the same rights as men in pay and control over their own bodies.

Is far from American women believing they are the most oppressed in the world.

I wouldn't call two-time winner Germany a small nation, nor is one-time winner Japan small or European.

But the lesson to draw from our success is that the U.S. was earlier than many soccer countries in supporting the women's game. Title IX is a big part of that, as are American fans who have supported the women's game for 20-plus years.

I started watching in 1999. It's a great game and this may be the best women's team to ever take the field.

NYC to Celebrate Team USA Win With Ticker Tape Parade
www.ny1.com

The U.S. women's soccer team claims its fourth back-to-back World Cup title after beating the Netherlands two to zero.

Forward and Co-captain Megan Rapinoe scored the first goal in the second half with a penalty kick against the Netherlands.

Shortly after, Midfielder Rose Lavelle scored the second goal.

Here in the city, fans are going wild.

"I'm so happy. I'm so pumped. Back to back world cup champions, that's crazy. I'm so excited. It was a shock that they didn't score in the first half because they have been scoring early. But Rose Lavelle she makes it look easy," said Alyssa Barone, a Team USA fan.

Mayor de Blasio has already invited the ladies to the city for a grand celebration.

YES YES YES YES!

To our 2019 World Cup Champion @USWNT: you have inspired the entire country -- and New York City knows how to celebrate champions. We'll see you Wednesday at 9:30 AM for the Ticker Tape Parade down the Canyon of Heroes. #OneNationOneTeam pic.twitter.com/bwCEoJYg3r

In some ways women's soccer is more entertaining than men's. It seems like they attack the ball more and are more offense-minded than men's. Men's soccer seems to move a bit slower and at times just looks like a big game of keep-away.

This is dumb. These women play a sport and millions watch them play in person and on TV. They have generated more revenue than the men's U.S. team for three years running. Of course they should be paid equally. There's even a good case to be made that they be paid more.

#83 | Posted by rcade at 2019-07-09 12:09 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

I have always assumed that the teams competing the in women's World Cup earn less in absolute terms than the men because the women's event generates much less revenue. The 2018 WC generated $6b in revenue. The 2019 women's WC generated $131m. That is quite a difference.

Of more interest is that FIFA distributes approximately 20% of the women's WC revenue to the competing teams, but only 7% to the men's teams. The women are relatively better off - why would they want equality?

#84 | Posted by Foreigner at 2019-07-09 12:20 PM | Reply

People want to frame it as sexist, but it's a traditional management vs labor battle. It's USWNSTPA the labor union vs FIFA the legendarily corrupt owners of the events.

Seeing as the women generate more revenue than the men, the women should probably be making more.

You wouldn't think twice about paying a salesman who brings in more revenue a bigger cut.

Well, maybe you would if it were a saleswoman, and you knew you could get away with it, in keeping with "traditional management vs. female labor battle" aka sexism.

They don't. $131 million vs $6 billion. 15 million watched the women's final. 516 million watched the men's final.

The women get a bigger cut of their much smaller pie. The union wants a bigger cut, good for them.

"They don't."

Oh, but they do. "According to financial reports from the U.S. Soccer Federation reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, USWNT games generated more total revenue than the USMNT games from 2016 through 2018: $50.8 million in revenue vs. $49.9 million for the men." finance.yahoo.com

"And then there's FIFA. In the discussion over soccer pay, it is key to distinguish between two separate spheres: regular season, where base pay is determined by U.S. Soccer, and World Cup years, in which payouts come from FIFA.

The overall prize purse for the 2018 FIFA World Cup was $400 million, and the winning team, France, got $38 million of that to divvy up among its players and staff. By comparison, the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup purse was $30 million, and the USWNT got $4 million of that. So the winning men's team last year earned more than the entire Women's World Cup purse. In 2015, the USWNT prize purse was just $2 million. In 2014, the USMNT divvied up $9 million after exiting in the Round of 16.

Just for making a World Cup roster, U.S. Soccer pays men $69,000 each, while it pays women $15,000 each, according to a 2016 New York Times op-ed by Carli Lloyd."

""The women are relatively better off - why would they want equality?"

Because they're absolutely worse off, dunce.

FIFA distributed $400m to men's teams in the last WC. So in your absolute world, in order not to be worse off, the women's teams should also receive $400m - out of a total revenue stream of $131m. One of us is a dunce, that's for sure.

Do you accept being relatively better off than someone else, or does like the actual number on your paycheck matter to you?
It's the number, right?
See, you're not such a dummy after all!

#93 - I accept that I cannot be paid $400m out of a revenue stream of $131m - to continue the World Cup example. Apparently you don't and I can't help you with that.

Some people struggle with rudimentary math.
