Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, July 15, 2019

President Trump launched a bigoted attack against four minority congresswomen on Sunday morning. His tweets were straight up racist. Did the news media accurately describe it that way?

"His tweets were straight up racist"

Yes they were.

This far prior to election it's hard for me to read this solely as Trump trying to gin up his base.

I think it's another sign his brain is fried.

Pelosi?

Maybe Tulsi Gabbard? Since Republicans seemed to think that someone born in Hawaii was not American during the last administration?

Question: "Who is the president talking about in this tweet when he said that these individuals... need to go back & help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came. Do you have any idea who he's talking about here?"

There are now five categories for data on race:
1) American Indian or Alaska Native.
2) Asian.
3) Black or African American.
4) Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander.
5) White.

Here's how NPR is dealing with Trump's racist tweets, i.e., by offering a history lesson:

'Go Back Where You Came From': The Long Rhetorical Roots Of Trump's Racist Tweets

www.npr.org

This section caught my attention because a friend was telling me tonight about how his father, who was born here but whose Italian parents were not, was told to "go back to where you came from" when he was growing up in NYC and then later when he lived in upstate NY:

Alan -----, a scholar at American University who is writing a history of anti-immigrant feeling in the U.S., says he saw this kind of thing play out firsthand when he was a child growing up in the Bronx.

"When kids had a fight in the street and the kids were from different ethnic groups, one kid would often say to the other: 'You and your parents go back where you came from,' " ----- recalls.

"You know, it could mean Brooklyn. But it could also mean go back where you came from -- you know, Russian Jews who came to the United States, southern Italians who came to the United States, Puerto Ricans newly arrived," he continues. "So when this came out of the mouth of this president who's from Queens, it sounded almost like a child saying that in my memory on the streets of New York."

Trump won because significant number of people of color stayed home. Who here thinks that same significant number is going to make the same mistake in 2020? Trump's tweets bring up negative associations for a lot of people who have parents or grandparents who were told to go back to Italy, Ireland, Russia etc. because they were practicing Catholics or Jews. Then there are the people from China, India and Pakistan and so on who are being told to go back where they came from even today. Trump is playing with fire, and if there is any justice in the world, he is the one who will end up burning the complicit Republican party to the ground once and for all.

It's too late now. Trump's already got the intended spaz-out reaction he wanted, and substituting terms would just be seen as an extension of that. And there's still problem of context, since trying to portray him as a bully picking on random immigrants doesn't equate with him going after a political subgroup who were already in the news for their racial comments within their own party and other comments criticizing natural born citizens.

One of the goals of Russian propaganda online, through the use of ads and bots one sites like Facebook and Twitter, was to suppress the minority vote. Comey's actions weren't targeted toward any specific group of voters but apparently did influence a number of people who had been on the fence and then decided just before the election to vote for Trump.

Viscerally, yes, that's true. When Trump originally called for his Muslim ban, it was a naked appeal to xenophobia and bigotry. He calculated correctly, however, that his opponents would misfire and fumble in their reactions to that. Everyone knows that Muslim is not a race, but he got people to use the R-word on cue. Here people are repeating almost the same mistake, and once the visceral reactions die down, most will come to that realization. Trump is playing with fire, but he's been playing with fire for years and is an expert at it. Hoping he gets burnt by his own fire is a bit futile after you've already jumped into the fire pit with him with a tank of gasoline.

"Here people are repeating almost the same mistake, and once the visceral reactions die down, most will come to that realization."

It isn't just people's visceral reactions that he has aroused. He is also tampering with the idea of America that many people hold and hold dear:

"America represents something universal in the human spirit. I received a letter not long ago from a man who said, 'You can go to Japan to live, but you cannot become Japanese. You can go to France to live and not become a Frenchman. You can go to live in Germany or Turkey, and you won't become a German or a Turk.' But then he added, 'Anybody from any corner of the world can come to America to live and become an American.'" Ronald Reagan

I think he may be the one who miscalculated this time, but we'll see.

This is just the opening salvo for the Trump/GOP effort to brand Democrats 'socialist.' A tired meme they've been using for decades.

From The Hill:

"The GOP has used this tired meme for decades. When President Roosevelt passed Social Security as part of the New Deal, when President Johnson passed Medicare and Medicaid, both were lambasted by Republicans as socialist programs that would destroy the U.S. economy. Today, these programs are pillars of it."

Nobody likes a mirror being held up for them, especially if the image they see is an ugly one.

"Zed still doesn't get why the Basket of Deplorables statement backfired on Clinton in 2016."

I'll bite. Why did it backfire?

Trump's whole schtick is Nixon's Southern strategy reworked for the 21st century. That's it. Trump stirs up white resentment against ________ (fill in the blank). With Nixon white resentment was targeted against African Americans.

For the 21st century, Trump is using white resentment against many targets: Muslims, immigrants, Hispanics, poor people on welfare, the LBGTQ community, our trading partners (especially the Chinese), uppity women (i.e. women who want to control their reproductive destiny), liberals, Democrats, and yes, African Americans too. It's a never ending resentment-fest for the MAGAts.

Ethnic Hispanics can be of any race. That's why it's a separate question from the race one on the Census.

Miscegenation is another issue.

I was referring to native Hispanics.

because a racist hates being called a racist. they like to think they're doing it from a position so powerful that they will never be called out. they do everything they can do keep it hidden, but also broadcast it out for the cred they get with other racists. they hate hate hate being brought down to their essence because they know, in their hearts, that racism is wrong and actually stupid. that's why you see racists everywhere begging for folks to stop talking about it.

It's all part of Trump's 2020 version of Nixon's Southern Strategy. Instead of focusing on African-Americans, he's doing it with people from all walks of life; Hispanics, blacks, Muslims, LGBT .. anyone who isn't a straight white.

After his racist tweet storm came this:

A senior DOJ official said AG Barr made final call on decision not to move forward in prosecuting Officer Pantaleo in Eric Garner's death, siding with EDNY recommendation over DOJ's own Civil Rights division, which *recommended prosecution.*

@ Alex Mallin (@alex_mallin) July 16, 2019

On July 17, 2014, New York City police officer Daniel Pantaleo assisted other police officers in the arrest of Eric Garner in front of his Brooklyn home for a minor charge of selling cigarettes without the proper tax stamps. Garner protested the arrest saying the police were continuously harassing him as he was just trying to provide for his family. As he protested, he was violently restrained and tackled to the ground, where Officer Pantaleo put him in a chokehold and didn't relent, even as Garner had a fatal asthma attack, in which he could be heard struggling 11 different times telling police, "I can't breathe."
Trump sycophants are happy

"I was referring to native Hispanics."

People from Spanish speaking countries in Latin America are native Hispanics, including Spanish speaking indigenous and descendants of African slaves.

f you actually read the tweet as opposed to listening to the libbbie news networks you would be hard pressed to find anything racist about ti - but then again libbies can find anything and anyone racist that they do not like.

I don't know if someone else has already posted this, but I find it interesting that EEOC guidelines specifically call out language such as "go back to where you came from" as an "ethnic slur" and "unlawful" under federal law.

See paragraph 7: www.eeoc.gov
