The US says it is removing Turkey from its F-35 fighter jets programme, after Ankara received the first parts of a Russian missile defence system. The US says the "F-35 cannot coexist with a Russian intelligence collection platform that will be used to learn about its advanced capabilities".

That's funny, in a press release about one month ago released by the Andalou Agency, Erdogan declared that the US will never kick Turkey out of the F-35 program, regardless of what he did.

Pres Putin is making a full court press to convince Turkey to leave NATO.

Pres Trump does not like, in any shape manner or form, that a NATO country controls the choke point of Russian submarines leaving their newly annexed base in Crimea to go to the Atlantic Ocean.

Strategically, the main reason that we wanted Turkey in NATO in the 70's to 00's was to know when Soviet Navy transitioned from the Black Sea to the Med (we have never been able to stop them from transit), but now with sensor technology and 24/7 drone surveillance, we don't need Ankara as much as we did. Erdogan knows this, but his bluster is falling on deaf ears both in Brussels and in DC.

@#3

I note your comment ignores the choke point that is the narrow waterway near Istanbul.

imo, the reason why Pres Putin annexed Crimea was to reclaim the sub base that Russia had built in a mountain.

Pres Putin annexed Crimea for that very strategic sub base.

His next goal is Turkey for the choke-point to the Atlantic.

It's not a matter of sensors, it is a matter of stopping the subs.

Recent reports say Turkey is aligning with Russia and turning away from the West. A dream scenario for Russia, who would then no longer need their warm water Mediterranean port in Syria and could leave that headache behind. Russia's Black Sea fleet already ramped up traversing to the Med via the Bosphorus through Istanbul.

Moves like this are what's going to get Trump re-elected. You think if Obama was still in Office he would do this?

You think if obama was still in office he'd be destroying the budget to give tax cuts for the rich, appointing lobbyists and family members to run the government, and hiding his financial past from legal government oversight?

Well I am really waiting for Trump to take back the nukes we have stored in Turkey at their airbase. That might actually mean something.

Choke point to the Med. Atlantic access means crossing the SOSUS nets at Gibraltar.

Turkey will save a lot of money and probably get a better airplane somewhere else.

I've always said Turkey is not our friend. Why would we be selling this to them anyway?

NATO membership?

Exactly, and I know for a fact that the US has plans to close the Bosporus if the flag ever goes up, which we would do even if Turkey remained a steadfast ally.

Until then, we only need to know what is transiting the Bosporus, and we have satellites, drones, sensors and bases other than Incirlik that cover that.

Losing Turkey as an ally while the Russians gain is going to get Trump re-elected? Once again it looks like Trump is working for the Russians. Maybe Boaz is working for the Russians too.

Laura,

For someone who claims victimhood status for everything, you sure do lobb alot of insults at people.

The best thing to happen to NATO is to get Turkey out. They are a dictatorship getting more authoritarian every year. Erdogan wants to reestablish the Ottoman Caliphate. He has some reversals in Istanbul later, but his support in the rural areas and the smaller cities has grown.

#18 | Posted by docnjo I seriously doubt the Russians will trust the Turks, they have a lot of history, none of it friendly.

They'll just replace them with Russian Su 35's. And India is going for the S-400 as well. They already told Iran to come get some. And, both Russia and China are making it real clear, they will no longer bow to the US.
Cannot be an empire forever.

@#10 ... Choke point to the Med. Atlantic access means crossing the SOSUS nets at Gibraltar. ...

One obstacle at a time. That is how long-term strategies are done.

One obstacle at a time.

In a shooting conflict, to get any naval assets from Sevastopol to the Atlantic, they have to transit the Bosphorus, Dardanelles, the entire Aegean Sea, get past EU-NATO cooperation at Malta, then transit the Strait, crossing multiple sensor nets, while being tracked by P-8 aircraft, after dodging god knows how many air dropped CAPTOR mines, and NATOs vastly overpowering array of attack submarines and upcoming swarms of ocean floor crawling drones that turn subs into zeppelins being shot at by surface to air missiles.

It's a lot of obstacles.

Trump had no choice. As would Obama or any President you freakin idiot. We are not allowed to sell them the planes now due to sanctions. Once they bought the Russian equipment the law took over.

You would have done better to blame Obama for not selling them the Patriot Missile system. Though that was due the Turks wanting tech they could not have.

Still. You could have just said Obama's Fault. Like Humpy.

#20 | Posted by gitmboy Nations can buy American and get the best or they can buy a manned target. Russian aircraft have a poor record of performance against ours. In Iraq they flew to Iran rather than commit suicide by engaging Americans. Are we that good? Think of the selection process for a fighter jock, of 100 qualified pilots who try, only three get into the seat.
