The transgender debate in women's sport has reignited after New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard won two gold medals at the recent Pacific Games, being accused of "robbing" fellow competitors of victory. Hubbard, 41, was born as Gavin before transitioning in her 30s, and picked up double gold in the women's over-87kg (192lbs) category at the Samoa 2019 games over the weekend. The New Zealander claimed the overall title on 268kg, ahead of Samoans Feagaiga Stowers on 261kg and Iuniana Sipai on 255kg.

It is going to be a while before the sports world adjusts to those who want to participate.

Might just as well abolish individual women's sports. All the records and medals are meaningless.

@#2 ... Might just as well abolish individual women's sports. ...

Why abolish just the women's sports? Why not the men's sports also?

However, instead of preventing those who want to compete in sports, why not adjust the sport to the participants, instead of arbitrarily preventing certain participants from competing?

#4 | Posted by LampLighter at 2019-07-19 11:03 AM | Reply

This is destroying everything underlying why women's sports were created in the first place.

I think we need a 3rd division for transgenders.. or womens sports are over

Why have separate men and women sports at all?

Why not have a set up like boxing where there are tiers of capability?

Of course in that scenario, there will be some men who will be beaten by women, and we can't have that now, can we? :)

I am awaiting on the first NCAA womens program to start a transgender individual. The over taking of womens athletics is only hitting fringe sports, with more and more frequency. Its not quite mainstream.

They do this with weight for "boxing" ....

"capabilities" implies judgment, like figure skating, they do this in PaddleBall, full of sandbaggers.

I believe that the statement was intended to mean eliminate the privilege of separating sports by gender and move towards a more equal system. I doubt the intention was to prevent people from competing.

#9 | POSTED BY LAMPLIGHTER

NO, you wouldn't get any women in the higher categories, thus removing any chance of women attaining professional status.

For instance U-15 team beat UWWNT ... soundly ....

Which is why womens sports was created....

That all you got?

#14 | Posted by AndreaMackris at 2019-07-19 11:33 AM | Reply

Another example?

Women have been able to play in the PGA for as long as I can remember. How many have you seen?

Its GOLF ... and they still can't play at that level...

How about Bowling?

Same thing, but there have been a couple of tourneys women have won, and no they didn't ban women after the fact.

@#14 ... That all you got?. ...

Actually, I didn't even have that. :)

Occasionally a thread comes along for which I have no real opinion. So I ask questions and make open statements, trying to elicit other opinions on the topic.

The point you raise about attaining a professional status is a good one, especially since what we know as "sports" nowadays is really little more than a commercial enterprise that starts recruiting employees in high school (some places, even elementary school)..

I still haven't heard any manner of allowing all those who want to participate to participate. Just reasons why the current system should continue to fail.

Or maybe we should just let the current system continue to gather more information before we start trying to chang eit?

To get females involved in athletics?

women/females, etc. not just lump them in with men so it's competitive.

this is impacting the competitive environment of women's athletics.

Its not an easy topic, but like most "technology" the law/society isn't marching at the same speed.

The answer is the creation of sports in which women have a natural advantage over men, like vacuuming or sandwich making.

I'm not yet convinced that I want law to evolve at the same speed as technology.

While I think the current "rolling average" approach may respond too slowly, I look at a range of reaction times, and want to avoid the urge to over-react.

Men are better at being women than women are. Or this is a ridiculous trend destroying women's sports.

Well, Jenner won Glamour's woman of the year award and he still had his penis. Does that make any sense?

In the name of equality, gender sports should be eliminated. Best PERSON wins. Separate but equal does not cut it in this country - do the SAME job. Unless, of course, we want to admit that women are inferior to men such that no woman will actually get the chance to compete if this were implemented. So, SJW's - which is it - equal rights or women are inferior?

There's more to it than that.

Historically, lots of private golf clubs don't accept women as members.

And it's not because women can't be competent golfers.

I would rather have an over-react and roll back, than under-react and destruction, society is meant to create guardrails, not pull us back from the brink.

Once society goes Liberal it doesn't go Conservative without some humanly vile event(Wars, Plagues, STD's).

There are no great women's soccer players - they just suck less than the rest of the world. Our USWNT lost to under 15 boys, same thing happened to Australia's team. Get rid of gender discrimination in sports - separate but equal is WRONG.

#36 | Posted by iragoldberg at 2019-07-20 01:27 PM | Reply

"So?"

So if women wanted to play golf, they had to set up their own organizations because the men would not allow them to use their facilities.

It's sexism.

Blacks were excluded too.

Who wants to tell me that wasn't racist, but rather because of physical differences, like you claim it is with excluding women?

Any woman that can make the cut can play in the Men's PGA. That does not work in reverse for men playing in the LPGA. So, your solution to discrimination generations ago is discrimination now?

Why are the US Women the best in the world at soccer?

And you will have your answer grasshopper.

Augusta National Golf Club en.wikipedia.org

The club long held racist and sexist policies: Augusta National admitted no African Americans as members until 1990[8] and no women as members until 2012. The club long required all caddies to be black[9] and barred black golfers from the Masters Tournament until Lee Elder participated in 1975.

How is it that a country that rarely if ever wins the male world championships, has women win? Not just win but dominate?

Why are Brazil, Italian women so poor at soccer when their men are so great, can't be the lack of coaches in those countries?

Why are American women so poor at golf?

Oh, FFS! Both the women's team in Australia and in the US got smoked by different U15 Boys' teams in a scrimmage.

Women golfers cannot drive the ball as far as men golfers. Being able to out-drive your competitors is a HUGE advantage and even Hollywood recognized this when Happy Gilmore was produced.
