Unionized campaign organizers working for Sen. Bernie Sanders's presidential effort are battling with its management, arguing that the compensation and treatment they are receiving does not meet the standards Sanders espouses in his rhetoric, according to internal communications.

Campaign field hires have demanded an annual salary they say would be equivalent to a $15-an-hour wage, which Sanders for years has said should be the federal minimum. The organizers and other employees supporting them have invoked the senator's words and principles in making their case to campaign manager Faiz Shakir.

The independent from Vermont has proudly touted his campaign as the first presidential effort to unionize its employees, and his defense of the working class has been a signature element of his brand of democratic socialism and a rallying cry for the populist movement he claims to lead.

However, the Sanders campaign is refusing to pay its own staffers that same wage.

"the compensation and treatment they are receiving does not meet the standards Sanders espouses in his rhetoric"

Describes every low-wage job...
And plenty of cut-rate hotel rooms too..

Nonsense. Bernie's "standard" is raising the wage by 2024. True Bernie Bros know as much.

This is just -------- stirred up by people who either don't understand, or want to pretend they don't understand, for political reasons.

Wait what?

Sanders isn't paying them a living wage?

I always knew he was the most worthless socialist and this just proves me right.

Indeed. At least Punchy tried to cover for him, which is more than the rest of the so-called Progressives here did on this thread.

If people are serious about the minimum wage, they will also ban unpaid internships. For many poor people, they are taking a job to improve their resume and gain skills so that they can get a higher paying job in the future so that benefit far outweighs the salary they are receiving - tell me how that is different than an unpaid internship.

How is it a hatchet job...his own employees are the ones complaining that he isn't paying at least $15/hr.

As Punchy pointed out, once this was made public, viola, he is walking the walk.

That's not what Punchy pointed out.

I know it's hot out there today -- you're suffering from heat exhaustion, and suddenly you're unable to read and comprehend.

No, as I said earlier Punchy was trying to cover for him, but did show that sunlight is the best disinfectant...Bernie got caught not living up to his own rhetoric, and when his own employees went public about it, he corrected his mistake.

Punchy pointed out as that it was weird that they went straight to the media to complain, instead of to Bernie.

Punchy pointed out as that it was weird that they went straight to the media to complain, instead of to Bernie.

I can read, Punchy, and not only was Sanders disingenuous by complaining that he "was disappointed the Union felt it necessary to leak to the press during the Collective Bargaining Process" but then react as if his hand was caught in the cookie jar by deciding to cut his campaign's hours, limiting them to 40 to "effectively pay them $15 per hour."

Bernie's campaign manager was actively negotiating with the Union when they aired their grievances with the press, but only the truly naive think that this somehow surprised Bernie:

(CNN)Sen. Bernie Sanders is a staple on the front lines of the labor fight, leading the charge in Washington and around the country to raise the minimum wage for workers to $15 an hour. But within his own campaign, which unionized earlier this year, tense discussions over pay have spilled out into public view.

The dispute threatens to undermine Sanders' political message and, if it were to escalate, his ability to credibly advocate for workers around the country currently engaged in their own struggles to negotiate higher wages and better working conditions.

Word of the discontent first emerged publicly on Thursday night in a Washington Post report detailing campaign field staff's frustration that their base pay, in some instances, does not match the $15-an-hour mandate that Sanders, as a legislator and candidate, has pressed for as the base minimum wage across the country. As the campaign ramps up, field staff are often required to work 10-hour, 6-day weeks, driving down their average hourly compensation.

In a statement to the Post, Sanders on Friday defended his campaign salaries and said he was "very proud" his presidential campaign was the first to unionize workers.

So not only did he know, but he defended those same salaries to the Washington Post.

I'm not sure where Pinch and Punchy are getting their spin that Sanders didn't know about it, because he admitted that he knew they were in the collective bargaining process to address the fact that he wasn't paying $15/hr:

Earlier Friday, Sanders expressed frustration in an interview with the Des Moines Register that staffers were airing their complaints publicly.

"It does bother me that people are going outside of the process and going to the media," he told the Iowa newspaper. "That is really not acceptable. It is really not what labor negotiations are about, and it's improper."

He added, "We are disappointed that some individuals have decided to damage the integrity of these efforts. We are involved in negotiations. And some are individuals that have decided to damage the integrity of that process before they were concluded."

It's also humorous to me that the die hard Bernie Bros. think that CNN and the Des Moines Register's reporting of this is somehow a "hatchet job."

Bernie is doing a fine job of discrediting himself, according to CNN and the Register.

It wasn't clear, but they didn't announce that they were hiring extra staffers to pick up the other 1/3 of hours being cut back.

So if the campaign workers needed to put in more hours for Bernie to win, they couldn't do it.

Fascinating, its almost as if socialism has a built self-destruct mechanism.
