What will happen in this hearing depends entirely on how hard Republicans will attack Mueller's character. If they attack hard enough they could provoke him to answer questions that hs knows the answers to but was prevented from putting in his report by Barr. Now he is not limited by the liars who want to protect Trump. Piss him off enough and he may spill the beans.

Everyone in the room knows Trump colluded with Russians, everyone in the room knows he has and is still obstructing justice, we just don't have a Justice Dept. that will enforce the law. Partisan hacks like Ben above will refuse to admit the truths that they do know are true because they, like Barr, just want to protect Trump from the rightful consequence of their actions.

A nasty rumor circulates concerning the special counsel – and it doesn't come from Republicans"
"a remarkable rumor is circulating among some Democrats. This is – in the words of one source – that Mueller is ‘slowly losing his faculties', that at the age of 74, the former special counsel is going senile. The source went on to say that this was one reason why Mueller had been ‘so intent' on limiting the time and scope of the hearings today."

If Mueller doesn't deliver the goods, the Dems will say he has dementia.

#89 | POSTED BY BRUCEBANNER

So... Trump was completely Exonerated again??

Oh wait. Now it is not the job of the prosecutor to exonerate anyone??

So if it is NOT the job of the prosecutor to exonerate anyone how can the report written by the prosecutor exonerate Trumpy as Trumpy claims it has done??

What's that? Trumpy was lying again???

Say it ain't so Joe!!

#99 | Posted by JeffJ

Jeff, I don't think this is about impeachment. It's about getting some of the facts in the Special Counsel's report out to the public, few of whom know much of anything beyond what Barr parsed in his 4 page letter. Many of us are more politically aware than the general public.

Republican's beating the Fusion GPS drum will backfire on them by getting some curious enough to look into it. They'll find that it was Republicans who hired Fusion GPS to begin with.

(I'd take bets that Gaetz (R-FL) has been punched in the face during his life for being a smarmy -------.)

Which is why we are having the hearing in Congress today.

If you have not read the report I will not take anything you say seriously.

You obviously don't care what really happened and you do not have a clue as to what really happened. And you probably do not even want to know. Only what your favorite Fixed News source has fed you.

Too bad. Congress is doing its job and educating the public. In spite of the President's numerous attempt to prevent that.

If you do not read the report how can you knowledgeably address the subject??

You can't so either

This hearing is about selling to the public. When it comes to obstruction the GOP has their soundbite. That's not to say that Dems haven't created some of their own but that is quite the bottom-line quote regarding obstruction.

Though I'm a Democrat, I have to say that Dems are focusing on the facts in the report while Republicans are focused on discrediting Mueller.

In the end, as I said earlier, I suspect Trump's actions in a wide variety of areas, coupled with his poor poll numbers in key swing states (underwater by as much as -14) will lead to his defeat.

This stuff is just the cherry on the cake, but not needed. Trump has dug himself a deep hole in the eyes of everyone but the 1/3 who'd support him even if, as Trump put it, he shot someone on 5th Avenue.

You were duped by a number of hoaxes in Ann Arbor.

Maybe your track-record since then has improved. As for your prediction on this thread, time will tell...

My biggest flop was I was sure that Obama would grant a mass pardon to everybody in this country illegally. Unlike DACA/DAPA it would have been an act that would have been constitutional (Carter issued a mass pardon to 'Nam draft-dodgers and Lincoln issued a mass pardon to the South after the Civil War). As far as I can tell, this isn't something that was even on Obama's radar, at least based upon what is publicly known.

Especially after this testimony, from the CNN updating article:

"Mueller affirmed his finding of no criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and the Russians during the 2016 election

"The investigation did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired with the Russian government in its election interference activities," Mueller said. "We did not address ‘collusion,' which is not a legal term. Rather, we focused on whether the evidence was sufficient to charge any member of the campaign with taking part in a criminal conspiracy. It was not."

For members of the Trump campaign to be successfully charged with conspiring with the Russian government it would almost absolutely require the testimony of Russians willing to say, in an American court, that they participated in such a conspiracy. Some Russians have been charged but they sure aren't going to show up in America to testify. That said, we know what they did but we can't compel Russians to testify so those traitors will get away with what we know they did.

Mueller offered little defense of his investigation amid repeated attacks from the Republicans and really has not put forth much "testimony" or new information that the Democrats were desperately seeking or that they can point to in their attempt to move the needle on this. Mueller looked frail and unsure of what exactly was in the Report.

These Justice Dept. policy that a sitting President can't be charged with a crime needs to change. Under that standard we could have a President committing serious crimes right out in the open without fear of being charged and then, if he were to resign he could have a deal worked out with his Vice President as in Nixon/Ford to pardon him for any wrong doing he did as President. Fortunately we have that proud statesman of Mike Pence in the Vice Presidency so we don't need to worry about any such thing happening. Ha Ha!

Not at all, you wouldn't need any testimony from the Russians, you just need evidence of the conspiracy itself, acts in furtherance of that conspiracy and the illegal act itself.

No matter how you slice it, Mueller and his team have stated, both in writing and now in testimony, "[t]he investigation did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired with the Russian government in its election interference activities."

Of course, that isn't going to stop you from breathlessly screaming otherwise, but from an investigatory and legal standpoint, that accusation is dead.

Do yourself a favor and save your crappy unsolicited advice for somebody who cares.

The investigation/report narrowly focused on conspiracy, which didn't find sufficient evidence to state it occurred.

As far as "collusion" is concerned, plenty of evidence was confirmed (we already knew it all prior to the report) of cooperation and communication between the Russian intelligence service and the campaign/transition team.

But you already knew that, because it's been discussed ad nauseum on this site since the report. And by discussed I mean distorted and lied about by people who either haven't read the report and just regurgitate whatever nonsense they hear on their AM radio shows or read it (part or all) and are simply lying, dishonest POSes.

You are usually smarter than this, the written report specifically addresses that fact that "collusion" is not a legal term, they equated it to "coordination" as has been done in the past in caselaw and similarly found that the "Campaign did not coordinate its activities with Russia".

But by all means keep weeping and lashing out at everyone, it only reflects poorly on you.

- We know Trump campaign manager Manafort handed over information on voters in MI, WI, PA to the Russians.

- We know Trump Jr exclaimed "If it's what you say I LOVE IT!" when told Russians were going to share dirt on Clinton

- We know Trump urged Russians to hack Clinton's emails. The next day they released campaign manager Podesta's emails.

We'll never really know all unless a Russian comes forward. And Trump's inner circle deleted texts, emails, and shredded documents. He refused to testify to the Special Counsel despite his LOUDLY proclaimed innocence.

"Hope he doesn't say that under oath in that we have numerous witnesses to the . . . interview, including the Vice President of the United States!" Trump said.

Mueller did just that, twice. He stated that he visited the White House about the job search, but "not as a candidate." He later reiterated the meeting "was about the job but not about me applying for the job."

This contradicts months of Trump's claims, and Mueller said so under penalty of perjury.

Let me put it this way:

When I was a young Prosecutor I had a case where we had flimsy evidence of Attempted Murder (but thought the Defendant was guilty of that) but had rock solid evidence of Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Armed Robbery, both lesser included charges for Attempted Murder. The supervising DA insisted that we go ahead with all the charges (a total overreach) and the jury punished us for it, only finding the defendant guilty of Armed Robbery, and he got 2 years as opposed to 10 for the Assault charge and basically left the court for time served for good behavior while in County.

Moral of the Story: Go with your strongest charges and forget the rest.

I get laying the groundwork regarding Misfud - getting all of that out there. But he used up almost his entire time allotted laying the groundwork. Of course he doesn't mean what the voices in your head are saying! Why would you suggest that? Oh that's right. You haven't even read the report yet. You are just blabbering nonsense.

Sometimes short answers are the best. Mueller has no need to be partisan like you or expound on the report. Only to verify its veracity.

In the first round of questions, House Judiciary chairman Jerrold Nadler asked whether the investigation "totally" exonerated the President––something Trump has repeatedly claimed.

Mueller replied, "No."

Let me take all that back.

In his opening statement to the House intelligence committee, Special Counsel Robert Mueller clarified an answer he gave to Rep. Ted Lieu.

His original answer was seen as Mueller saying the only reason the President was not indicted was because, as president, he cannot be indicted.

However, Mueller clarified the correct view is that they made no assessment as to whether there was a crime or not because of the OLC guidance.

"Now before we go to questions, I want to add on correction to my testimony this morning. I want to go back to one thing that was said this morning by Mr. Lieu who said, and I quote, you didn't charge the President because of the OLC opinion. That is not the correct way to say it," Mueller said.

Synopsis:

Liars on Drumpf team impeded the Russia investigation.
POTUS can be indicted for crimes, just not while in office according to the "rules."
Because of the lies and obstruction, and the highest level of burden of proof, there was "insufficient evidence," of conspiracy between Drumpf and Russia. This does not mean "no evidence."
Report does not exonerate POTUS.

#425 | Posted by justagirl_idaho at 2019-07-24 02:22 PM | Reply

Let me bottom line it for Republicans...

Here are the basic facts that Mueller says are not in dispute:

1. Russia hacked Clinton to help Trump. Illegal.
2. Russia was attempting to help Trump with social media. Illegal.
3. Russia offered dirt on Clinton to the Trump campaign. Illegal.
4. There was insufficient evidence to determine whether the President coordinate with Russia. No illegality here for lack of evidence.
5. Trump knew about Russia's help and the meeting where Russia offered dirt. Not illegal.
6. Trump encouraged the help and did not report it to any law enforcement authorities. Questionably Legal and Definitely Impeachable.
7. Significant evidence, including emails and WhatsApp messages, were deleted before Mueller's team could obtain them. Illegal.
8. Trump attempted to stop the investigation of himself, his campaign, and individuals involved in Facts #1 and #2. Likely Illegal and Definitely Impeachable.

Republicans want to ignore all the illegal activity because they can't pin it on Trump. But Trump was still elected with the illegal help of the Russian government.

And #6 and #8 are sufficient for impeachment.

Thats not the only purpose of today's hearings.

Much of the country is under the fox news umbrella of delusion. They don't know that trump took russias help, that trump obstructed justice to hide it, and that the russian attacks are ongoing. Todays hearings are designed to show that the fox news narrative is a lie.

Sure if you view everything through the lens of partisan advantage and impeachment, then the ongoing attack thing isn't as important.
But if you view things through the lens of what americans should know about current events, do you not consider that something people should know?

Legally I agree. Not reporting Russia's help as a legal issue is not sufficient for much.

Politically though, I think its a huge win. THAT'S what they should focus on for messaging. The President got illegal help with Russia, refused to notify legal authorities, encouraged it, lied about it, and then refused to punish Russia for overt illegal activity.

We already knew all of that, it was in his Report.

The major concession that Mueller made in the morning to Ted Lieu was erased by Mueller's clarification at the start of the second hearing:

"I want to add one correction to my testimony this morning," Mueller said. "I want to go back to one thing that was said this morning by Mr. Lieu, who said and I quote, ‘You didn't charge the President because of the OLC opinion.' That is not the correct way to say it. As we say in the report and as I said at the opening, we did not reach a determination as to whether the President committed a crime. I want to make it clear that I did not intend to support Mr. Lieu's implication that we would have indicted Trump if not for the OLC opinion."

Ouch, but my guess is that the DNC talking heads will ignore this clarification.

The ball is back in Nancy's court, and I don't think that the needle moved as much as the Dems hoped it would.

Illegal.

#2: First amendment, being what it is, any person is able to purchase ads in support of or against any candidate they so choose. Unless I am missing some law. Would you care to explain how this is illegal? Stealing ID's to create the fake accounts is what was illegal.
#3: It is not illegal for Russia to offer to sell the Trump campaign information regarding Hillary Clinton. As long as the information was not a donation, legal. Fortunately we don't have any evidence that Russia made or the Trump campaign solicited a donation.
#7: Deleting emails and messages prior to a warrant to present them is in no way illegal.

Your Dear Leader approved of Russian interference, lauded it, and aided it. Russian oligarchs and agents are prominent in the Report you haven't read... and your Pres is not only a crook, he's a traitor.

This is a tidbit I'm not familiar with. It depends on under what capacity those emails and messages were sent. If it was part of the campaign itself, that is correct. If those messages were after Trump was inaugurated then federal records-keeping law likely applies.

Meanwhile, McConnell is still blocking election cybersecurity legislation:

While Republicans and Democrats alike have attempted to pass a variety of legislation to improve election security over the past two years in response to Russian interference, McConnell has repeatedly stood in the way of the bills and argued against the need for a greater federal role to protect voting.

A New York architect had completed plans for a bold glass obelisk 100 stories high by September 2015, with the Trump logo on multiple sides. The planned Trump Tower would have been the tallest skyscraper in Europe.[14] The proposed site was a location in the Moscow International Business Center, near the Moscow River.[15]

It's more likely Trump is lying than telling the truth.

During the campaign:

- He lied about the Moscow hotel deal. It was still being negotiated in the summer of 2016.

- He lied about not knowing Putin, who he'd previously bragged about knowing.

Recently? He never 'liked' Epstein? They were pals until Trump pulled the rug out from under him a real estate deal where Trump flipped a $41m property to a Russian oligarch for $95m.

Adam Shiff (to Mueller): "Was the President truthful in his answers to your questions?"
Mueller: "No"

Ya, it's always more likely than not Trump is lying. It's what he does. Over 11,000 documented lies to date since his inauguration.

Amid all the breathless optimism in the MSM, it looks like the DNC Spin Doctors are already working behind the scenes, "downplaying expectations for the hearings", since there is a strong likelihood that this is going to be a huge disappointment for their base.

All I know is that if Wednesday blows up in Nadler and Schiff's faces, they should step down from their Chairmanships.

Citizens United says that an ad purchase not connected to a campaign is not a campaign contribution.
People offer me things all the time that I would have to purchase - your premise that things offered are only offered free of charge is flawed. Since we don't have any evidence that the offer was free of charge, we can't make an honest assessment of the legality of it. A lack of evidence of wrongdoing puts us well on the innocent side of the reasonable doubt requirement for criminality.
If there were evidence that the destruction was to interfere with a future investigation, you might be right. Since there isn't, you aren't.

One step closer to impeachment....as I've said before, those itching for impeachment proceedings, especially ROC, are missing the bigger picture.

As I've stated previously...

Actions still to be taken by Congress:
Full House to vote on Barr's contempt. - Check.
Serve contempt of Congress notice to DOJ/DOC. (DOJ will refuse to prosecute Barr) - Check.
Sue Barr in court. (Drags our for months/years unless expedited.) Approved but pending...
Obtain Mueller report. Pending previous.
McGahn testify. - Going to court to enforce.
Mueller testify. - Check.
Barr re-testify. - May not be necessary.
Mueller follow up testimony. - May not be necessary.
then....
Impeachment. - May run out of time before Trump loses in 2020.

So it looks like my game plan is clicking right along. That anyone thinks impeachment is a lost cause, off the table, or past its expiration date is laughable. You don't bring impeachment charges at the first assertion of criminal activity (Mueller Report). It appears the Dems in Congress are doing their job in exhausting all avenues before proceeding with impeachment. But I do fear they may run out of time. Trump is toast in 2020. There aren't enough racists and bigots left in America to elect him again. Were this the 1950's maybe. But America is progressing beyond our racist past.

What you call "pissing away taxpayer money" was a Criminal Investigation.

Because knowingly accepting foreign assistance during a presidential campaign is not only an unethical thing to do in certain circumstance it is also a crime.

Hence the investigation into whether a crime was committed.

Crimes were committed.

#607 - SpeakS

If everything goes perfectly for Trump. That is an extremely narrow needle to thread when losing by 5%. The appeal of a bigot who breaks the political correctness mold has lost its luster. The closed eye to Trump's bigotry and racism for a percentage of moderate Republicans is opened. With a larger field Bernie will be out earlier. Bernie Bros will be at a minimum. Democratic party Presidential nominees are strong. Warren, Biden, Buttigieg, Harris will have better party turnout than Repubs and a stronger pull with moderates. Harris/Buttigieg ticket would bring some strong energy to the turnout as well. With a couple firsts on the ticket there'll be more than a few that cross the aisle to vote Dem. All IMO of course. All that being said, there are too many +1% and +2% variances on the Dem side to thread that -5% needle.

Maybe you should talk to humpy and the gang about that.

Isn't that what Humpy the "businessman" wants?

I mean I agree that it is ridiculous to think that way but that is how a Deplorable humpy thinks.

I agree The government does not exist to make a "profit". However, getting a return on investments is another matter. The government should expect that the money it spends does benefit the People.

One thing is certain though.

It definitely should not go into Humpy's pockets.

Generally inadequate, incomplete, and untruthful is how Robert Mueller characterized President Trump's sworn answers to written interrogatories.

One of the articles of impeachment against President Clinton was for perjury. Republicans often point this out when it is suggested that Clinton was impeached because of a sex act.

I tend to think impeachment of Trump isn't worth the time and effort because very few, if any, Senate Republicans would vote to remove him from office. But, I also can't help wondering why Trump should be be held to a lower standard than a predecessor.

Is your ignorance chosen or are you just ------- lazy?

Trump claims of ‘no collusion' are inaccurate

Asked if he found evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow, Mueller said his team avoided the term "collusion" because it had no legal application. Mueller acknowledged there was insufficient evidence to establish a criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and the Russians, but he said it would not be accurate to suggest there was no evidence of coordination.

In one of the most damning exchanges, the House intelligence committee chair, Adam Schiff, secured confirmation from Mueller on numerous ties between Trump's campaign and Moscow.

Under oath, Mueller said:

*The Russians had led a campaign to swing the 2016 election in Trump's favor and committed crimes to achieve that goal
*The Trump campaign was receptive to help from the Russians
Donald Trump Jr said he would "love" to receive dirt on Hillary Clinton from the Russian government
*As a candidate, Trump publicly urged the Russians to hack Clinton's emails
*Trump pursued a lucrative Trump Tower project in Moscow during the campaign
*Multiple top Trump campaign and administration officials were convicted of lying to investigators about their contacts with Russians

Trump hiring putin assets to run his campaign and into his administration was NOTHING

Mr Mueller was asked what he thought of the president's praise of Wikileaks, which leaked emailed from the Democratic National Committee during the 2016 campaign.

"Problematic is an understatement in terms of what it displays in terms of giving some hope, or, I don't know, some boost to what is, and should be, illegal activity," Mr Mueller said.

The president told Stephanopoulos that "life doesn't work that way" when asked why his son didn't go to the FBI. Trump also said he would want to hear if another country had information on another candidate and called it "oppo research."

"It's not an interference, they have information," Trump said. "I think I'd take it. If I thought there was something wrong, I'd go maybe to the FBI."

Stephanopoulos then pointed out that FBI Director Christopher Wray said his agency should know about contacts from foreign governments.
