A new law in South Dakota now requires all public schools across the state to feature the "In God We Trust" motto on display. Students returning to school this fall will be greeted by the message, which supporters say is meant to "inspire patriotism."

Clear violation of the Constitution on the separation of church and state.

The "D" next to Democrats in states like South Dakota is so toxic that Republican state legislatures and Governor have blatant contempt for the Democrats, the Constitution, and their constituents best interests -- in that order.

Nothing stands in the way of Republicans getting what they want. Republicans are NEVER afraid to use power for their own narrow agenda, and to hell with what the Constitution says.

- Republicans = winning
- Donald Trump = winning
- Democrats = losing

Sickening

The fact that a community would REQUIRE schools put up a sign saying 'In God We Trust', and the fact that so many people would be OUTRAGED by that requirement really reflects just how completely divided we have become as a society. We have no common values left.

"The fact that a community would REQUIRE schools put up a sign saying 'In God We Trust', and the fact that so many people would be OUTRAGED by that requirement really reflects just how completely divided we have become as a society."

I don't think that is exactly true. The Republicans do seem to want to divide us but most of the rest of us still believe in the Constitution and freedom of Religion, which this action in S. Dakota is designed to negate both.

Danni, a hundred years ago no American would blink an eye at having In God We Trust posted outside school. Just as it is on all of our currency. Because a hundred years that was a shared value across all strata of society. Currently, I can't think of a single value shared by all strata of American society. Certainly not the ideas contained in the Constitution. Not equality. Not justice for all. It's all become segmented beyond recognition. We are so fractured that there are no beliefs around which we all cohere.

It doesn't belong on school property. That being said I am not in favour of denying a student to recite a prayer in the school if that student wants to.

"Danni, a hundred years ago no American would blink an eye at having In God We Trust posted outside school."

I strongly disagree.

"Currently, I can't think of a single value shared by all strata of American society."

I've been saying this for years.

"We are so fractured that there are no beliefs around which we all cohere."

South Dakota isn't helping.

"Never codified by law, E pluribus unum was considered a de facto motto of the United States until 1956 when the United States Congress passed an act (H. J. Resolution 396), adopting "In God We Trust" as the official motto."

E pluribus unum is far closer to American ideals than this religious nonsense.

I am not so sure ... "primary purpose of the slogan is secular"

Not a fan of the idea, but I doubt it goes against the constitution.

"Currently, I can't think of a single value shared by all strata of American society."

Certainly not the ideas contained in the Constitution.

If you are referring to this article, are you saying you are against the constitution?

Not equality.

Equality of outcomes, or equality of opportunity?

Not justice for all.

What does that mean? Injustice happens, but its still a value, I still go to jury duty as an honor and a privilege, don't you?

Who doesn't do that? Perhaps they should lose their citizenship?

But an Indian worker asked me an honest question, whats the point of citizenship in the US? I honestly had no good answer, because everything that is an honor of being a citizen is possible in the US without being documented.

That didn't take long.

This is just the conservative version of identity politics. I think its stupid, and is a good reflection of the people of South Dakota (clutching to their guns and bibles and all that). Its not worth my effort to care about their trusting in some magical sky fairy, and it shouldn't be worth anyone else's effort either, unless they live in South Dakota.

Trump Wants to Take Away Your Citizenship
The current administration is bent on making it easier to denaturalize American citizens.
By Karen J. Greenberg
www.thenation.com

...
Meanwhile, he also turned to naturalized citizens. On them, the 14th Amendment is clear. It grants citizenship to all persons "born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof." Under US law, denaturalization can occur only in certain situations, such as if an individual lies on his or her application for citizenship or is guilty of bad conduct -- such as membership in a terrorist organization or an other-than-honorable discharge from the armed forces -- in the first five years of citizenship.

During Trump's presidency, there has been an all-out effort to find and prosecute such cases. Between 1990 and 2017, according to the National Immigration Forum, the Department of Justice filed an average of 11 cases of this sort a year. In 2017, that number more than doubled, and 2,500 new investigations were reportedly opened. In June 2018, the DHS even announced plans to create a new office in Southern California, whose focus would be uncovering cases ripe for denaturalization.

Exactly.

What's amazing to me is white conservatives don't seem to recognize their own identity, even as they're out there using the laws to institutionalize it.

They don't call it "identity politics."
They call it "traditional American values."
They can't figure out the doublespeak.

I don't necessarily disagree, particularly about white conservatives not recognizing their own identity. For example, white conservatives, IMO, are far removed from the message of their Jesus.

That said, conservatives are more homogeneous (and thus more organized) in their identity politics than are liberals...and it shows.

So Liberals will follow the separation of church and state because it's in the Constitution but not the separation of citizens and illegal immigrants as stated by the words in the Constitution. The ENTIRE FREAKING THING starts with "We the people OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA...". It doesn't say "We the people of the world..." or "We the people of the United State of America and our bordering countries..."

Again, until Liberals start caring about all laws, their opinions are irrelevant.
