The United States announced Friday it has formally withdrawn from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Moscow, putting an end to a landmark arms control pact that has limited the development of ground-based missiles with a range of 500 to 5,500 kilometers.

Time to spend even more money on the military and then blame the Dems for driving up the debt.

Military madness coupled with dollar hedgemony gives us all a free lunch of sorts. But that is worth nothing if it leads to nuclear annihilation. It also happens to be a profound violation of international law and moral failing that causes untold suffering around the world. Republicans don't care and far too many Democrats are afraid to be accused of being soft on defense even though 90% of our military spending has nothing to do with defense.

As Mustang pointed out above, you are assuming they are following those "laws". You act like countries have to obey "international" laws. What happens when they dont obey? What's the enforcement? War?

There is only one true law. One that's enforced by mother nature.

The strongest always wins and then makes the subsequent rules and history.

Perhaps you should read the Treaty and find out. Its mechanisms are better than no mechanisms at all, unless you're a Russian.

I've noticed lately that retardicans seem to think that just asking a stupid question is a legitimate form of argument.

Socialists are threatening America!

Russians have been flouting the agreement for years. We'll be better suited to defend our allies in Europe. As an added bonus, Raytheon and General Dynamics stock holders will be pleased. They were major Hillary donors, so this will make up for her losing.

#12 | Posted by lee_the_agent at 2019-08-02 12:37 PM | Reply

Russia has responded to our movement of missile bases into Poland and the former Yugoslavia. Make no mistake about it, they are playing defense and we are playing offense.

If what Boaz claims are true we would have triumphed in Vietnam, Iraq, Libya and Syria. At this point any rational taxpayer should be asking whether it's about winning or spending wastefully for the sake of spending wastefully.

Putin's really getting his money's worth.

Bringing america down by helping elect a moronic con man turned out to be way more effective than trying to compete with us militarily.

#5 | POSTED BY MUSTANG

They were complying for the most part on 95% of it. There was a disagreement about some recent testing.

Now they don't have to comply at all. Congrats!

And you and Trump can whine they breached the agreement just like the Iranians did...after we tore it up.

#22 | Posted by Sycophant at 2019-08-02 02:29 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

They're not complying. The Iskander + SSC8 platform clearly violates the treaty. That's an upgraded RK-55 cruise missile with a 1500 mile range and nuclear warhead.

#23 | Posted by sitzkrieg at 2019-08-02 02:37 PM | Reply

The only people saying it complies is the Russian Federation. The same people that say the cruise missile range only has a range of 500 miles. There are no Russian troops in Ukraine either.

So the response it to remove all sanctions on Russia and tear up the treaty?

Seems like you saw your neighbor giving it to your wife so well, you decided why bother trying to stop him.

What happens when you violate international laws, written by the USA after WWII? It depends how big the country is and whether or not they have nuclear weapons. If you're an African or Middle East leader, except Israel, you stand a good chance of invasion by the USA. If you are a Central or South American country you are at risk of US intervention whether you violated any international law or not. In any case the USA considers itself and Israel to be above the laws which the USA wrote.

IMF covers weapons with a range of 3000KM or less, I honestly don't know of any weapon system still in the inventory with a range that short. What the IMF treaty does not cover; ICBMs, air craft delivered bombs, Cruse missiles, submarine launched missiles, and just about everything in the current inventory. We got rid of the Pershing II more than 25 years ago. We got rid of the small tactical nuclear weapons back in the late 80s because of SALT II. That included the Lance and artillery launched weapons.

The Google says the MGM-140 ATACMS ranges out to 300 km.

#38 | Posted by REDIAL at 2019-08-03 12:53 PM | Reply

#38 | Posted by REDIAL, The MGM-140 ATACMS is a guided missile that can be launched with a MRLS weapons platform. It holds a conventional warhead, but has the capacity to hold a nuclear device. IMF covers nuclear weapons. The prime reason we are withdrawing from the IMF is the threat of third party nations, like PDRK or IRI launching a weapon. Unfortunately, while we have had some success at knocking down an incoming missile, the one way guaranteed to stop one is with a small nuclear weapon very high in their trajectory of an incoming weapon. The Russians can whine, but the situation has changed over the last 30 years.
