Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, August 03, 2019

Police in El Paso, Texas, are responding Saturday to an active shooter in the area of the Cielo Vista Mall, the agency tweeted. "Scene is still active," police wrote, adding, "avoid the area" around Hawkins and Gateway East boulevards. At least three businesses in the area are on lockdown. Three Walmart employees took refuge at a Landry's Seafood house, restaurant manager Oscar Collazo told CNN. The women appeared "shook up" but not injured. Landry's had already gone on lockdown, he said, but opened its doors when the employees ran there. "We never thought it would be so close to us this time," Collazo said. "You see on the news all the time, but you don't think it could happen here until it does." The nearby Hooters and Red Lobster are also on lockdown. Employees at those restaurants told CNN they are safe and see a lot of police, helicopters and people running around outside.

Good question.

I think it's probably a combination of America's lack of dignified employment opportunities with dignified wages and benefits to match ... along with social media's retrograde influence of fake images of what personal happiness looks like ... along with, lemme see, access to guns (?!).

People feel inadequate, frustrated, and over time they become resentful ... and eventually they're filled with rage.

There's no need to look for all kinds of reasons mass shootings happen here.

El Paso Shooter Identified Online As Trump Supporter Who Didn't Like ‘Race Mixing'

The El Paso shooting was the second mass shooting in as many weeks reportedly attributed to white supremacists. Just last week, Santino William Legan killed multiple people attending the Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California. That shooting and Saturday's shooting in El Paso were the latest in a growing string of attempted and carried-out mass shootings attributed to overt pro-white racism that has soared since Trump was elected.

The Shooter in El Paso according to a Sargent on the scene says the shooter is Patrick Crusius

If this is true, the Twitter account associated with Patrick is full of Trump and MAGA related postings.

Another right wing extremist motivated by xenophobia t.co

-- Davis Schmiven (@WheresMyArk_23) August 3, 2019

A manifesto purportedly written by Crusius, perhaps even in the hours before the shooting attack that according to one report killed at least 15 people, was left behind. Pages of the manifesto included anti-immigrant rhetoric with the author going into depth on why he is "against race mixing," supports the idea to "send them back" and offering a prediction of "genocide."

Other Twitter posts from the shooter, Patrick Crusius, supported Trump's 'wall' and MAGAt white nationalism.

Crusius scrubbed much of his social media before the shooting, but screen grabs found some of them.

Screen grabs of Twitter posts the shooter wasn't able to take down before the murders are full of pictures of Trump and MAGAt links. Others have been found:

The El Paso shooter's pro-Trump white nationalist tweets just surfaced

His Twitter handle includes: Patrick Crusius -GUN- ANTI ABORTION- #MAGA #DUKE, and includes retweets from Trump and KKK Grand Wizard, David Duke. A banner appeared on his Twitter feed this morning; his picture alongside Charleston church shooter, Dylann Roof, and the caption "I had to do it because somebody had to"

Bay,

"A dangerous 21 year old boy who belongs in an insane asylum, not a prison."

You're most likely correct.

But how do we institute a more aggressive program to lock up and evaluate the potential violent crazies before they've committed any crimes?

More gun control isn't going to get to the root of the problem which is crazy people who would just find another way to commit mass murder if they didn't have access to guns.

Until we stop making this problem a political problem and saying these shootings are the result of one thing or another (such as gun right supporters or white supremacists) but instead is a national problem and a social dysfunction that has grown out of social chaos and disorder, I don't believe things can get better.

How did he "protect" them?
Did he shoot the shooter?
What role did having the gun actually play in protecting these kids?
Did the police know he had a gun?
Did he have it out?

So he was licensed. Ex-military. Pulled his gun out when he heard the commotion, then (I assume, based on his own words) put the gun away so he could gather all the kids with his arms and hands to lead them out. After all, he says he had a bag in one hand, and was gathering up all the kids he could in his arms and grabbing them with his hands. That kind of rules out having his gun out.

In other words, the gun played no role in protecting the kids or getting them out. He didn't see the shooter, he wasn't in the same location as the shooter. The shootings happened at WalMart, adjacent to the Mall he was in.

This shooter doesn't strike me as being "insane" as some have suggested. He attend community college but wasn't very ambitious:

He wrote in the About section of the LinkedIn page, "I'm not really motivated to do anything more than what's necessary to get by. Working in general sucks, but I guess a career in Software Development suits me well. I spend about 8 hours every day on the computer so that counts as technology experience I guess. Pretty much gonna see what technology careers present themselves; go with the wind."

Seems like he was into conspiracy theories though:

A Twitter account, under the name @outsider609, that appeared to belong to Crusius was taken down by Twitter late Saturday night. On the Twitter account, which was last active in 2017, Crusius liked and retweeted several pro-Trump photos and memes. He also followed and like several right-wing Twitter users, including InfoWars conspiracy theorist Paul Joseph Watson, Scott Presler and Steven Crowder.

And he did like Trump:

In February 2017, he liked a tweet by a user showing a photo of several guns positioned to spell out "Trump." The tweet read, "I'm extremely proud to call Trump my President! He's doing a wonderful job and is truly going to #MAGA! #MondayMotiviation."

Just look around the world. There are people much younger than that who do crazy --- and murder people they view as invading their home/village/country.

Laura,

"Gun control is the only way to stop this."

The problem is Pandora's Box is already open.

Guns are everywhere and law enforcement would have to start going from house to house without warrants and start looking for them.

And disarming the public is not a good idea besides for a variety of reasons having nothing to do with mass shootings.

We need to get to the root of the problem.

Simple minded people with nothing but political verbiage have nothing to offer and are really just in the way.

if you have a gun and you want to sell it...the buyer needs to get the serial # and have it checked, or you as the seller could offer up a verified check from the local police good for say 30 days...the buyer should get insurance too before he buys it and heads for home, if he gets stopped it gets confiscated.

new gun sales should be more carefully regulated, IMO

The shooter doesn't like Democrats or most Republicans and resents what he sees as Democrats catering to undocumented immigrants and Dreamers:

The manifesto said both Democratic and Republican politicians are failing because they are "either complacent or involved in one of the biggest betrayals of the American public in our history." The "betrayal" is "the takeover of the United States government by unchecked corporations."

"Due to the death of the baby boomers, the increasingly anti-immigrant rhetoric of the right and the ever increasing Hispanic population, America will soon become a one party-state. The Democrat party will own America and they know it," it said.

It described Democratic policies of open borders, healthcare for undocumented immigrants and citizenship as a way to enact a coup by recruiting voters.

It lists "economic reasons" saying immigration will shrink the number of jobs available to American citizens.

"Even though new migrants do the dirty work, their kids typically don't. They want to live the American Dream which is why they get college degrees and fill higher-paying skilled positions," the manifesto said.

The shooter is not "Leftist". Read the manifesto posted in #236:

Losing Texas and a few other states with heavy Hispanic population to the Democrats is all it would take for them to win
nearly every presidential election. Although the Republican Party is also terrible. Many factions within the Republican Party are pro-corporation. Pro-corporation = pro-immigration. But some factions within the Republican Party don't prioritize corporations over our future. So the Democrats are nearly unanimous with their support of immigration while the Republicans are divided over it. At least with Republicans, the process of mass immigration and citizenship can be greatly reduced.

It's a start to go after AR-style rifles with insertable magazines.

Because if we are willing to work for it, and fight for it, and believe in it, then I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on Earth. 226% could mean that it increased from 1 to 3.25. But I can't find a link to the actual study. Also the study headline "Hate crimes increased 226% in places Trump held a campaign rally in 2016" is suspect. What was the question they were studying?

"How much did hate crimes increase where Trump held a rally?" it's almost a pre-drawn position looking for support. Did they also study, "How much did hate crimes increase where Trump did not hold a rally?" But of course, ANY increase anywhere could just be attributed to Trump out of hand, if that's what you're looking for.

Now for the consequence. They took this individual alive. His trial will occur within the end of this year. Multiple murder carries the death penalty in Texas. Some criminal trials, yes. Capital cases, no. You seem to think I don't know about or pay attention to trials in Texas. Wrong, I've lived here the vast majority of my 65 years. I've had more than a passing interest in trials in the state since becoming a practicing lawyer 30 odd years ago.

Ain't no way a capital case goes to trial in 90 days. H**l, it'll take that long for the state to assemble all the autopsies, medical records, lab reports, forensics, search warrant results, statements and follow ups and all the other evidence needed to proceed with a capital case. Then the defense get their turn to play with the evidence that evidence. Like I said, year minimum more likely closer to two or more.

I've noticed, you have an outdated and simplistic view of Texas courts and law. There's a cure for that. Find it.

"The shooter specified that Trump was not a cause or factor in his decisions, which predated Trump."

He did say his ideology pre-dated Trump, but I don't believe he said Trump was not a factor in reinforcing that ideology. In fact (from my post #211):

In February 2017, he liked a tweet by a user showing a photo of several guns positioned to spell out "Trump." The tweet read, "I'm extremely proud to call Trump my President! He's doing a wonderful job and is truly going to #MAGA! #MondayMotiviation."

Also, I'm not sure we should take the shooter's word on not "blaming" Trump. It seems like he could have a vested interest in protecting the President he likes so much and hopes will continue to do "a wonderful job". The guy is still alive and reports are he is talking to investigators, so maybe we will learn more from that as well as from interviews with people who knew him.

#317 | Posted by Gal_Tuesday at 2019-08-05 09:09 AM | Reply

"The shooter posted exactly the opposite."

Mass murderer says the president he admires isn't responsible for his actions even though much of the shooter's rhetoric conforms with Trump's. I'd say we shouldn't take his statement at face value just yet. The El Paso shooter, for example, starts out his manifesto by praising the Christ Church shooter:

"In general, I support the Christchurch shooter and his manifesto. This attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas."

The Christ Church shooter in turn also admired Trump:

In a manifesto sent to the office of the New Zealand prime minister, other political recipients and media outlets, the accused gunman praised the US president as "a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose" but said he did not support his policies.

Shooters seems to see Republicans as the lesser of two evils:

Although the Republican Party is also terrible. Many factions within the Republican Party are pro-corporation. Pro-corporation = pro-immigration. But some factions within the Republican Party don't prioritize corporations over our future. So the Democrats are nearly unanimous with their support of immigration while the Republicans are divided over it. At least with Republicans, the process of mass immigration and citizenship can be greatly reduced.

Gal,

Don't you think the opinions of the millions who support Trump mean something?

The majority of people who support Trump do not endorse terrorism.

Then again you also wrote, "I'm not sure we should take the shooter's word on not "blaming" Trump."

You know what the millions of Trump voters really think just like you know what the shooter really meant.

Laura,

No...not going there.

Why not? Don't like facing the truth?

"The majority of people who support Trump do not endorse terrorism."

The majority of the people who support Trump don't call it terrorism when we waterboard people, or separate children from their parents.

Perhaps there aren't as many open carry cowboys as we think?
I've also considered the store is frequented by many undocumented families and they probably aren't walking around strapped like a stereotypical Texan.
Either way, I pretty much wondered the same thing as you.

The majority of people who support Trump do not endorse terrorism.

Trump blames and scapegoats all of America's problems on minorities.

They, like you, found a President who not only supports your hate, but encourages it to grow and fester.

The Republican Party is the party of hatred.

It's why you feel so comfortable there. You're with your angry, ignorant brethren.

"There is a much greater number of people who support Trump but don't consider white terrorists "one of their own"

^
I just noticed how weak this deflection is.
So weak, I didn't realize it was a deflection at first.
In no way does it contradict "white terrorists see Trump as one of their own."

Snoofy,

"In no way does it contradict "white terrorists see Trump as one of their own."

What makes you think I was attempting to contradict it?

No one is denying violent white supremacists who hate blacks and gays are not democrats.

I wasn't trying to contradict it.

What I was saying is the millions of people who voted for Trump would be a better indicator of what Trump represents that a small minority of radical extremists.

Is that too complicated for you?

""In no way does it contradict "white terrorists see Trump as one of their own."
What makes you think I was attempting to contradict it?"

You are trying to deflect from the fact that Trump emboldens the terrorists.

In this case they know he is guilty.
So you'll support execution for him if that is your case?

They being God? The holy Trinity? Because that was the context I was referring to.

"Mass murderer says the president he admires isn't responsible for his actions even though much of the shooter's rhetoric conforms with Trump's."

You are constructing a logical fallacy. Julian Casto actually said something sensible - the only person responsible for the shooter's actions is the shooter.

"the only person responsible for the shooter's actions is the shooter."

Is anyone responsible for encouraging the shooter's actions?

"Is anyone responsible for encouraging the shooter's actions?"

Not that we know of. If you can find references to other people saying they would support or vote for him, then perhaps. Otherwise it's just as much a logical fallacy as saying those who espouse anti-corporate rhethoric were encouraging him.

How many pretzels does it take to create your narratives? He wasn't threatening to shoot Hillary or encouraging people to shoot anyone.

He was saying that Hillary's judicial picks would take away their guns. Therefore, supporters of 2nd A. need to vote for him.

"Therefore, supporters of 2nd A. need to vote for him."

No, that doesn't make sense. The condition was "if" his opponent got to pick her judges, implying it would be well after the election. This was an example of one of Trump's more despicable statements, where he come right up to the line without crossing it. He didn't encourage anyone, but it wasn't as innocent you're trying to spin it either.

#350 | Posted by sentinel at 2019-08-06 12:56 PM | Reply

I certainly didn't take it to mean "go shoot Hillary".

#351 | Posted by SheepleSchism at 2019-08-06 01:01 PM | Reply

It was deliberately vague and ambiguous, and meant to pander to people even Trump thinks of as scum.
