"There are reports of an active shooter and mass shooting at Ned Peppers bar in Dayton, Ohio "

"At one point, an officer said on the scanner that it looked like 9 to 10 people were shot. That's preliminary information because the situation was unfolding quickly."

Via Reddit, unconfirmed

EDIT: Numbers rising to 10 dead, 24 Injured making this the 25th deadliest shooting in U.S. history.

EDIT: A photo of the deceased shooter is going around on Twitter. I will not be providing it. However this confirms the shooter was a young white male with a black mask covering half of his face

As MODER8 famously said, "America spends on security while Pakistan spends on stretchers and body-bags".

OOPS

Guess all of MODER8's "America spends on security" was "nonsense out of an old man" as usual. Three attacks a week is NOT okay. America is NOT in control.

After spending 20 years shooting up Afghanistan looking for Taliban terrorists, now America needs to shoot itself up looking for Incel terrorists.

Start with this -----....

I wonder what it is about America that makes this so common. Could it be the unfettered access to such dangerous weaponry?

It's being said that the Sunday morning news/interview shows are having problems finding Republicans to come on their programs this morning. The issue appears to be that the networks refused to promise that they would not ask them about their positions on issues like universal background checks, bans on assault-style weapons, whether they've received campaign donations from the NRA, etc. Gee, I wonder what the problem was with that...

"Wildly successful" is less than 19% compliance. In the US that would leave at minimum, using 2 year old surveys not corrected for people that don't admit they own guns, that leaves 300 million or so firearms in civilian hands in the US. Again, almost all owned by the right wing. Now with Sheriffs who will specifically not enforce these laws.

we have the 2nd that won't allow anything but a voluntary buyback.

Virtually every pre-2000s case interpreting the 2nd Amendment ruled that the plain text of the Amendment requires that weapons have some relation to a "well-regulated militia" in order for any ownership rights to be conferred by the Constitution. The notion that civilians have a "right" to own AR-15s is a relatively new judicial interpretation that can, and must, be changed.

#34 | Posted by moder8

You don't need to. The Second Amendment was written to apply only to what today we call the National Guard. The people who wrote it didn't intend for it to have anything to do with an individual's right to own a muzzle loading musket. Remember Robert Bork? He was somewhere to the right of Atilla The Hun but he was a great legal scholar. That's what he said. And the plain language of the amendment makes that clear. The Federalist Papers and other writings of the time leave no doubt.

Once again, 100 round magazines enabled these murderers to shoot dozens of people in minutes.

This shooter shot 36 people in one minute, which wouldn't have been possible without a large capacity magazine.

And the velocity of the assault weapons in both shootings, like man others, meant more of those who were shot died.

Why point blame instead of legislating? When will House Democrats pass a bill banning these weapons and magazines?

This is no different than Democrat inaction on immigration.

All Republicans do is offer 'thoughts and prayers' and tell us it's 'too early' to talk about it, 2nd Amendment, blah blah blah.

If we could do it cleanly, I have no issue removing the 2nd Amendment.

The only issue you have is confiscation, much worse than deporting 12million illegal immigrants is 150Million weapons you just outlawed.

As with both cases, the government did nothing .... "thoughts and prayers" in both cases.

Lawlessness the whole thing is nothing but lawlessness.

Regulations solve nothing, enforcement does, something Liberals have constantly criticized.

Apparently it's stopped House Democrats from even trying.

They should pass a bill and then wave it around to rally support. But they won't.

The real question is why?

America has an alt-right(see white) extremist domestic terrorist problem.

250 mass shootings in 2019, almost all by cowardly Trump supporters.

Something major needs to be done.

Whats stopping them? Don't they care about the children?

Good question. If nothing else, it gives them an issue to bludgeon Republicans with in 2020. Every Republican who voted against it in the House and Senate would be called "agents of death," bla bla bla. Pelosi ought to be pushing a tough bill right now and taking advantage of these events.

There are many things that could be done immediately.

- Passing Universal Background Checks, which is overwhelmingly supported by even NRA members, for starters. And make it for all guns, not just pistols.

- Improving the background check system, which is a hodge podge patchwork system, currently. One state can't find out about domestic violence charges or mental illness from another, for instance.

- Requiring gun safety courses before anyone is allowed to purchase or use a gun.

- Requiring the registration of ALL guns, especially these assault weapons that kill so many in such a short amount of time.

- Banning high capacity magazines, which are among the reasons mass murderers can kill and injure so many people in such a short amount of time.

After every mass shooting there's lot of talk ("thoughts & prayers" etc) from the right, but no action.

It is NOT Democrats stopping common sense measures from being enacted!!

You mean the party owned by the NRA? What's the Democratic Party's excuse..."we might not get voted back in"?

What do democrats value most, political seats or children? House Democrats could pass a bill tomorrow banning specific weapons and criminalizing possession. They could wave that paper for the next year into 2020 saying that Republican child killers are road blocking it.

Why won't democrats take action?

But I'm willing to compromise so that revolvers, shotguns, and bolt action hunting rifles are exempt.

#108 We have these discussions every time some mentally impaired nutter shoots ap a crowd.

Randomly banning or restricting weapons based on cosmetics is pointless. Gun restrictions, if adopted, should be based purely on Muzzle Energy. For instance, I would argue that firearms designed to be held and fired with one hand that have grearer than 300 ft/lbs of ME should be restricted to revolvers. Similar restrictiins would apply to rifles: rifles that have over 2000 ft/lbs of ME would be restricted to lever/bolt/single action...between 1000-2000 ft/lbs, semi-autos limited to internal magazines of 7 rounds...and so forth. It's the only reasonable approach.

#109 | POSTED BY MUSTANG

I'm fine with limiting muzzle velocity, still I'd do away with semi-auto altogether leaving revolvers, single shots, break action, and bolt action.

I hunted for twenty years and never landed a second shot to my knowledge. Almost every deer was one shot. I hunted with both 30-30 and .30-06.

.22 and 410 for rabbit and squirrel, went goose hunting once with a double barrel.

#111 | Posted by REDIAL at 2019-08-04 07:56 PM | Reply

No contradiction at all. Sometimes you track a shot deer and find them down and still breathing.

It doesn't take a semi-automatic rifle to put the creature out of its misery. Nor does it take a 50 round magazine.

But I never got off two shots at a deer. Usually after the first shot, all you see is a flash of tail. Now go suck on your hockey stick, hoser.

#110 Muzzle Velocity is less meaningful than ME. You must account for the weight of the bullet to make a reasonable yet subjective assessment of the lethality of a round.

Like you, my firearms tend not to be semiautomatic but I do see the benefit of a semiauto in some circumstances. My turkey shotgun, for instance. That said, the opinions of you and I are of no value...because NEED is irrelevant. Again...reasonable controls need to be utterly devoid of prejudices.

I get what you're saying, but I'm not a gun enthusiast and I don't hunt anymore.

All I'm saying is that a semi-auto AK47/AR15 style rifle with 100 round mag isn't a hunting rifle.

It can be done away with. So can any semi-auto weapon. Hunter will still have plenty of guns for hunting and target shooting.

Politically, he apparently was a Democrat. But his former former classmates said he was antagonistic toward women and had been keeping a kill list and a rape list. They used the words "toxically masculine -------" to describe him. Sounds like at least part of the motive was that he was an over-amped incel seeking retribution. Can't figure out why he'd shoot his sister, but maybe she had been criticizing his views toward women.

As the #MeToo revelations made clear, woman haters come from all backgrounds.
