The law that took effect July 1 prevents ammo purchases by customers at gun shops if they cannot show they have a registered firearm or are on a list of felons or severely mentally ill, thus are disqualified from possessing guns.

California prosecutes people who illegally conceal guns, own guns, transport guns or transfer guns. Over my decades as a public defender, I have seen hundreds, possibly thousands of such cases. In most cases, especially misdemeanor violations, the perp never believed they were doing anything wrong. Frequently I will hear the accused in such cases says things like, "but I'm not a criminal". To which I reply, "if you are doing something the penal code says you are not allowed to do, you are a criminal". They remind me of the typical drunk driver with no prior record.

I collect them. None of them have gone down in value. Most of them have increased in value, so saying I wasted my money is idiocy.

I've been shooting since I was 6 years old. When I joined the Marines, I found the M-16A1 was the easiest rifle I ever shot. It's light, minimal recoil, accurate. When I got out, I started collecting firearms as a hobby and investment. Fear wasn't involved.

Willowby, what's your take on things like "The looser a state's gun laws, the more mass shootings it has." www.wired.com

Good. The mentally ill should not be in possession of a firearm. Same with felons, though I thought they were already prohibited from owning guns. So we have stopped them from purchasing guns legally. What do we do to ensure they don't obtain them illegally?

#28 | Posted by goatman at 2019-08-07 09:50 PM | Reply

What do we do to ensure [criminals] don't obtain [guns] illegally?

You can't.

You can increase the severity of the penalty in hopes of dissuading people from getting a gun.

But. In the end. If a person wants a gun, and can get it, they will.

Same as with drugs.

#29 | Posted by ClownShack at 2019-08-07 09:55 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

"Good. The mentally ill should not be in possession of a firearm. "

This law doesn't go that far, though.
This just stops them from buying ammo.
It's to cut off an end-around on your next question:

"What do we do to ensure they don't obtain them illegally?"

Nothing you'll like.
Register guns and gun owners.
Track guns from manufacture to point of sale.
Reduce the prevalence of guns to be sold wrongfully, stolen, etc.
Execute search warrants for people who shouldn't have guns, or sell improperly.

Since there are about as many guns in the US as there are people, and 15,000 were killed by guns last year (excluding suicides), the chances are very, very low that they will kill anyone with them -- about 1:22,000. So you don't need to worry about willowby's offspring hiding under your bed wanting to pop a cap in your ass, or anyone else's. On the plus side, your melodramatic prediction is mildly amusing.

Semantics. You dont know whose hands they will end up with who might then use them to kill someone.

You bought more guns that you need, you brought more death machines into this world than anyone needs, outside of a militia cult. Death machines result in death unless carefully controlled, and you can't guarantee that careful control after you're gone.

That it takes more than "a person" to shoot someone with a gun. It takes "a person with a gun." So we should be focused on stopping the wrong "persons" from "having guns."

But the minute anyone proposes even the slightest speck of legislation related to guns, they are immediately sued into oblivion and subjected to endless false equivalence from disingenuous politicians and their hordes of gun fetishizing supporters. Apparently you're one of them? Congrats?
