Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The Deep South was built on the very idea of getting "free stuff", with free labor to build all the stuff you ever dreamed of having. How about the white men who were given Indian land for free. Then in an era of development the Guv'mint built highways, price supports, dams, electricity ... The latter are a good thing. But are foreign mining claims for $5/acre also a "good thing"?

It hasn't ended either, bank bailouts and the military budget, completely unnecessary for national defense, cost taxpayers tens of trillions of dollars, compromising our ability to promote the general welfare. Welfare for the poor is NOTHING compared to any single one of these practices.

Slaves were not free to the owners just like a tractor isn't free to a modern farmer.

Slave labor's only cost, after purchase, was food and shelter in a shack. Not free, but certainly the very least cost possible.

#2 Do you believe that's changed with the NEW slave class of migrant labor?

I believe the new form of slavery is debt peonage. The ruling class always basks themselves in luxury for something close to free.

They are if you're a stateless capitalist intent on exploiting a natural resource.
So are slaves, for that matter.

When most Americans take home less than 25% of their rent or mortgage bill and they need a car to get to work every day they are headed for dead peonage. Its like the game of Monopoly, it may take time, but eventually one person gets the upper hand and crushes everyone else. That's how Capitalism works, even though its more complicated than the game of Monopoly. There is a class that doesn't lose, rentiers, bankers with an endless supply of nearly free money, landlords and insurance companies that profit regardless whether the customer has a good month. They mostly shuffle paper, which isn't real work. Bankers oilmen, defense contractors are all on government handouts which renders the entire welfare bill trivial.
