Our Caesar - Can the country come back from Trump? The Republic already looks like Rome in ruins.

Four years after Donald Trump emerged as the most nakedly authoritarian candidate in American history, it's tempting to view the threat he once seemed to pose as overblown. Upon his election, some panicked that he would be a proto-dictator, trampling every democratic institution in the fascist manner imported from Mussolini's Italy and Hitler's Germany. Others saw merely a malign, illiberal incompetent who would probably amount to nothing too threatening -- or believed that America's democratic institutions and strong Constitution would surely survive Trump's strongman posturing, however menacing it appeared in the abstract. Many contended that his manifest criminality meant he would be dispatched in short order, with impeachment simply a matter of time.

I haven't seen this much manufactured hysteria since early 2017.

The article is post-apocalyptic fan-fiction.

I couldn't finish the article over uncontrolled laughter. If the US survived the Civil War, they can easily survive Trump. People don't realize how powerful our Constitution and a three branch form of government is. If they did, they wouldn't be so scared all the time. When Trump suspends elections, be scared.

I'd argue that the Judicial branch is losing ground to the other two.

The judiciary may still be independent, but the party controlling the Executive branch and the Senate now get to decide who sits on it.

That's my take on it.

Yep. Most of Obama's gains were of the phone/pen variety.

While it's been gratifying to see much of it undone, the damage done by the "Dear colleague" letter turning college campuses into kangaroo courts will last for at least a decade.

Yet the lawsuits are still coming.

Then they don't have anything to do with an order that's been rescinded for nearly two years.

These cases (now a class action suit) preceded the order being rescinded. Also, a lot of universities are still carrying forward with the "dear colleague" guidelines.
