The two correctional officers assigned to watch the special unit in the detention center where financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was being housed when he apparently hanged himself Saturday were working overtime -- one forced to do so by management, the other for his fourth or fifth consecutive day, the president of the local union for jail staffers said Sunday.

Admin's note: Participants in this discussion must follow the site's moderation policy. Profanity will be filtered. Abusive conduct is not allowed.

Serene Gregg, president of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 3148, said the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan is functioning with less than 70 percent of the needed correctional officers, forcing many to work mandatory overtime and 60- or 70-hour workweeks.

"If it wasn't Mr. Epstein, it would have been somebody else, because of the conditions at that institution," Gregg said. "It wasn't a matter of how it happened or it happening, but it was only a matter of time for it to happen. It was inevitable. Our staff is severely overworked."

This is why competent oversight and management of the massive federal bureaucracy is important, something Republicans habitually prove they ignore.

As the president says, it was inevitable. At least the modern Democrats mostly try to find competent leadership even though they may fail at times. With the GOP, dysfunction is their goal and plan so they can farm the responsibilities out to their favorite donors' corporations.

Of course, the right will blame the union, naturally.

Officials had long been raising concerns as the Trump administration had imposed a hiring freeze and budget cuts on the Bureau of Prisons.

"All this was caused by the administration," Young said.

Spokesmen for the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In congressional testimony earlier this year, Attorney General William P. Barr conceded the bureau was "short" about 4,000 or 5,000 employees and said he had lifted the hiring freeze and was trying to ensure a steady pipeline of new officers to replace those who leave.

"I think this is an area where we have stumbled," Barr said.

Republican policies kill people.

The guards were in on it.

When someone commits suicide, it's usually days before a coroner states the cause of death. Also, who hasn't heard that child molesters are hated in prisons?

Did the news jump the gun on cause of death?

Chomos are hated, but they get put in segregated prisons because people were killing them so frequently. The death rate for them has plummeted.

If you're a guard, it's not every day you get a billionaire prisoner. You can sell that guy a $800 phone and cahrger for $50,000 cash dropped off anonymously.

I guess the surveillance camera pointed at him all the time was also on overtime.

Whoever was behind this isn't doing the MSM right. My God its laughable.

Yeah that's really frigging obvious since the subservience video was deleted.

I've been listening to the podcast Fresh Out, from a former federal inmate interviewing other former convicts. One common theme is how the cameras are never working when the guards beat you down, but they're always working when anybody does anything to a CO.

Google "Sylvia Landry"

Same thing happened to her.

Prison guard overtime is a scam perfected by the guard union in California. Go to the publicly available list of highest paid state employees and there will be many simple guards playing the OT game to make $200,000 per year to check nuts and butts all day.

Billionaire with info about other rich and powerful men who did fly on his plane and travel with his sex slaves....then he turns up dead.....while no one was looking....yeah right. We'll probably never know the truth but we don't have to stupidly pretend to believe the story they are trying to sell us. At least I certainly don't.

The right and left are finally united and it is a divide based on CLASS. Epstein's friends were all rich and powerful and I think everyone not part of their club (thanks George Carlin) wants to see them burn.

Ok, first - on this one I am DEFINITELY leaning toward this was a highly suspicious "suicide". There are a LOT of moving pieces in it though if it was an execution. Too many for all of them to keep their mouths shut. You have Guards, supervisors, ME (if they rule suicide), etc.

Next - Cameras - I have not Read anywhere about cameras. Anyone have reliable links? I have not read/heard from any news source there was a camera trained on his cell. First time I heard "erased" was in this thread. I did hear that they existed and had "malfunctioned" during that period in other comments. Either way if they did exist and malfunctioned it would be damned convenient. Erased can be recovered. I am sure they have plenty more capacity than 9 hours and if there were those there were more cameras. They should be able to tell who came and went unless the ENTIRE system "malfunctioned".

I also don't know in this facility how they access doors and cells? Old fashioned keys or electronics? Electronics leave logs.

Oh and BTW - he wasn't a Billionaire anymore. His net worth is estimated at $550 Million.

Republican math #194

Instead of paying 3 guards for 40 hours a week we will pay 2 guards for 40 hours a week plus 20 hours of overtime at time and a half. What a savings!

#16 | Posted by hatter5183 at 2019-08-13 09:34 AM | Reply

Huge pension and benefit savings though. Those long term, unfunded liabilities are going to break most state economies.

Capitalization of mass incarceration-- profit incentives from America's incarceration infrastructure places financial gain above the public interest of safety and/or rehabilitation.

If this sounds familiar, it should-- it is exactly the same financial scam the entire MIC is based off of, only the MIC does it on a global scale and uses foreign countries and regions as "prisons" for cordoning off and/or incarcerating undesirables.

I don't have the numbers, but how much of this country's economy is based directly or peripherally off of the military, law enforcement, incarceration, and those who are "guard labor" (basically people who do not produce and actual commodity, but simply 'watch over' those that do)

My guess is quite a bit.

Even guards in high end prisons aren't getting treated right by their employer?

#19 | Posted by Tor at 2019-08-13 08:56 PM | Reply

Has anyone checked the youtube drone footage from of the epstein/clinton resort/pedo island remains? He had footage of the FBI/NYPD raid from yesterday too.

And where in the world is his accomplice Maxwell Ghislaine? Is she with carmen?

High value targets such as JE should have been on an actual watch, not some video screen system that could have been comped. Also the gaurds should not have left for midnight cell cleaning.

We will probably get as little of the evidence/motives/facts as that Las vegas "incident" last year.

Here in Wisconsin we dont just make COs work overtime. Instead we leave the guard towers empty at night, leaving the prison even shorter staffed. And they announced it. Now they wonder why people arent lining up to work nights at the prison with no backup.

#21 | Posted by hatter5183 at 2019-08-14 09:04 PM | Reply

prison gaurd is not a desirable career for even the most non sane person. This is why we should just remove these criminals or create an "escape from new york" type prison system. Pedos, rapists, polluters, and murderers should just get a rope to hang from.
