All signs point to a decades-long cold war with China, one reshaping global alliances, politics and economies.

Great. We need to declare independence from China's economy. We don't need to be dependent on them anymore than we needed to be addicted to OPEC oil.

De-globalize. Re-localize. It's a national security and economic security issue. Might be painful in the short run, but no pain, no gain.

Such isolationist tendencies tend to lead to large global wars. Which would be painful in the long-run.

The question in my mind is how do we strike the right balance between the complete isolationism you espouse and the large interdependence we have.

Agreed, we need to stay engaged but on fair terms, otherwise it's the late 1930s all over again.

Globalists are loyal to money and power and not their homeland.

So at what point does an American Capitalist become a globalist? Or can you even tell a difference?

Doesn't a Capitalist go when the opportunity to earn money leads him, wherever that may be?

Trump or no Trump, it was inevitable.
China has gotten economically powerful enough to rival the US as the world's strongest economic power.

That's why I think this trade war is really only a skirmish, a lead-up to a much longer-term standoff.

We had tried to contain China's economic power, but we cannot do that any more. So we're faced with figuring out how to live with a new economic rival. A rival whose economy is in the early stages of a growth cycle, while our economy is in the late, post-growth "mature" stage.

It is going to take more than tariffs to stay ahead of China.

Rivalry is from a political perspective, not an economic perspective.
Looks to me like it's playing out as currency war between the two.

From a personal perspective, why contain China's economic power? Much of which China owes to American consumers. They don't care about politics. If it wasn't for China, Americans would be that much poorer.

You just described the entire American corporate business establishment.

Here's a 1944 picture of president of Montgomery Ward, Sewell Avery, being physically arrested by soldiers for not supporting America's war effort during WWII.

The unpatriotic Avery yelled "To hell with the government, you... New Dealer!"

What, a, douchebag.

You're also describing what happened to America's middle-class, which at one time was the envy of the entire world ...
