Pres Trump has said he takes advantage of any and all tax breaks available to him.

For a time, when I drove to work, I'd drive past a rather large house (more like an estate) on many, many acres. There'd usually be a llama or two at the fence watching me drive by.

Around here, it's called "gentleman farming."

Which is just a euphemism for what it really is, a significant tax break.

You do realize that the county assesses land and its value, right? The owner is not allowed to do it himself.

And giving a home to a few goats to call it a farm? Oldest loophole in the world. There is a family who owns a very lucrative piece of property and Dallas. They make sure they produce the bare minimum bales of hay every year so they can call their property farmland, even though it's almost right in the middle of Dallas

Is there anybody here who does not take advantage of every tax advantage available to him, including those in this thread insinuating Trump is doing something illegal or wrong?

I didn't think so.

Those condoning this are crazy. Just because something is technically legal doesn't make it right. No wonder Trump is hiding his tax returns, there are probably many things on them he doesn't want known because it would show him to be the crook that he is. Meanwhile America, y'all keep paying what you owe the government as you have probably done all your life and start demanding the closure of tax loopholes that let rich crooks avoid paying what they really should owe. You Trump voters sure do look stupid this morning. Donald Trump laughs at you every night before bed time. I don't blame him for that, it is pretty funny that so many are so stupid.

When Marge Schott lived on a huge estate in Cincinnnati's finest neighborhood she ran a similar scam. She bought a cow so as to keep her land zoned for agricultural use. Marge liked Nazis too...

I'm not defending it, I'm saying that people take advantage of every tax break they can. Reading and reading comprehension are fundamental.

So what is wrong with a person taking advantage of every tax break they can? Don't you?

Yep, that is the Republican failure. As I've been saying, Republicans don't rule by morality. But, they do rule by REALITY. Liberals have a morale high ground but rule by thinking they are in some fantasy world where everyone holds hands and sings kumbaya all day long. At least Republicans are ruling based on the real world, as crappy and mismanaged as it is. Once Liberals come out of their fantasy world and start combining morality with reality, Reps are doomed. But, unfortunately, Liberals have been going in the complete opposite direction since the 90s.

Republicans write laws to give themselves advantages at the expense of the people they rule.

You used the right word though. Republicans rule. They think the government is "in charge" of everyone else. Democrats GOVERN. They are sent to Washington by the people to represent the people and act on their behalf.

Republicans game the system and congratulate themselves when they "win" even if it knocks down other Americans.

As offered, no issue with. When you go out of your way to exploit a loophole, like bringing goats to a golf course, no bueno.

This is a failure of the tax code. With home offices, you get the percentage that you're using of your home as a deduction. He should get the percentage of his golf course that he's using for the favored break, and nothing more. If the tax code allows a 100% deduction for a 10% use, it's the fault of Congress.

#19 | Posted by Danforth at 2019-08-16 05:30 PM | Reply

I thought farm status was a local zoning issue and had to do with property taxes. Trump already doesn't pay income taxes.

Where I live the code says you have to actively farm the property you claim is a farm to get the reduced tax rate, but I know people that stopped 'farming' and still get the reduced rate.

Yes. At times there are very good reasons, like if your Schedule C shows a small loss.

"I didn't think so."

Oops.
