I wrote this thread to avoid completely hijacking another.

IMO, the 7 deadly sins, are neither deadly or sins, to an athiest.

What deadly about them or sinful?

I am a Christian for more reasons than "I was taught that way."

So, my question to my fair feathered friends the Retort athiest, is the matter then considered legal or illegal, becoming illegal because the majority believes it should be?

Goat, I saw your answer, so no need to repost it here.

To be honest, those I know as athiests, we dont talk it out.

They know where I stand and they know me.

You were thoughtful in your answer...thx.

I hope you can understand the, perhaps not perfect Christian, premise of your 'heart' felt belief vs. a religious belief that either dictates or morphs one's own heart felt belief on issues

I find this the biggest crutch of slamming a Christian involving our nations laws.

Don't force your religion on me! Did anyone ever think that it is their heart talking and not some religious dogma?

Dog license, fences around your property, trees that fall from your yard into mine, if your kid's baseball breaks my window, who pays?

Everything doesn't always come with a religious tag...nor does it carry an irreligious tag.

Without reoigion, eating fish on Friday is no longer wrong. Without relion, not wearing a hijab is no longer wrong. Without religion, spending all day Sunday at the beach is not wrong. WIthout religion, eating a nice ham sandwich is not wrong.

Religion creates so many silly wrongs, the world is better without it.

Religion is a term for hate and division.

Your question seems to suggest that absent a celestial dictatorship prohibiting murder, theft, or perjury would you be inclined to commit those acts.
How do you suppose societies were able to forbid these things long before the invention of monotheism if your particular god is a necessary prerequisite?

Religion gets it's morals from us, not the other way about.

All you need to know to live a moral life is this:
No not do unto others as you would have them not do unto you.

Empathy is the basis of morality.
Oddly enough, not everybody has empathy.
If your only reason for not being immoral is fear of reprimand for being immoral, then you don't have morals.

Not exactly .... but men and women before us.

Religion is a historical aggregation of ideas/morals/codes that help civilization learn from the past.

Empathy is the basis of morality.

No it isn't ...

If your only reason for not being immoral is fear of reprimand for being immoral, then you don't have morals.

This is a pre-conventional morality, and it is the foundation of morality, punishment and obedience. Religion in its genius, states there is an all knowing and punishment will be meted out in the afterlife.

Morality as has been shown over and over again is irrelevant to the individual, and its usefulness is in attempting to control other individuals to be just/right/social and universal ethical principles, in the hopes of a better civilization.

Religous morality, without it being codified and taught in schools, will end in a mess of violence and heartbreak.

Just look at all the kids committing mass murder that come from broken homes. This is the after-affect of no Religion and signs of the Apocalypse to come.

How do you explain 'the kids' who commit mass murder precisely because of religion?

the after-affect of no Religion
No Religion? Huh? Atheists are a tiny minority. We have no power. You can't be elected to any office in this country without a public display of religious subservience. Religion isn't going away and no one is advocating it be banned.
You can have your blankey if it helps you sleep at night.
Just dont try to teach it to other people's children. And on questions of morality have the guts to admit you are the one that wouldn't know right from wrong without Big Brother, leave the rest of us out of it.

Without relion, not wearing a hijab is no longer wrong.

Even WITH religion it's not wrong. DUH

The hijab is a political statement that ugly women wear to hide their looks. It basically became popular with the Iranian revolution. It's political, not islamic.

WIthout religion, eating a nice ham sandwich is not wrong.

There is no right or wrong. There is choice, good or bad.

Eating red meat is wrong in the medical sense.

Try eating locusts. You will feel a lot better/healthier.

Religion creates so many silly wrongs

Men... and more women than men... create these silly things because 90% of the world's population is dumb. They may look and sound sane.. actually they are insane. But you only find that out when they open their mouths on the NOONER..... by then it is too late.

If you let them, they will try to turn grass into spaghetti.

There is a wide gulf between religion and spirituality. Religion(s) are the creation of men to have power and control over other men.

I'm far less militantly anti-theist than when I was younger - more of a dedicated agnostic. I had to admit that in a universe where scientists debate how many dimensions there may be that we could never perceive, or that may be a hologram on the face of some distant event horizon, or one of literally endless universes, that we honestly do not understand our own reality at the most fundamental level. Yet, I cannot turn that into some God of the gaps fallacy either, where I fill the gap in knowledge with some magical being to explain it all.

However, on the subject of morality without religion, that's a much easier answer. On a macro level, any society of more than a few individuals are going to end up codifying values into laws - laws that will reflect an agreed on morality. At least until the bureaucrats step in lol. But ultimately, these are just ways of making society run more smoothly. Of increasing the community as a whole's safety and strength. On an individual level, morality is in many ways much more complex. A mix of the golden rule and empathy, something we have evolved because groups that evolved those traits were more likely to survive hard times together. We are a social animal. And as such, the average neurotypical person also has reward pathways for doing altruistic acts, a sense of guilt for harming others, etc. Also, I take our innate tribalism as further proof of this being an evolved trait, as we are also capable of stunning cruelty and amorality towards those we have "othered," who are not part of our in groups. It proves our morality is not a universal or objective thing, but rather subjective and geared towards helping those most like ourselves the most. As such though, it's not hard formulating a sense of morality in the absence of religion. It is the social cues we have evolved to increase the odds of our, our family, our society, and last of all (in that order) our species - essentially our genes, from the most Ike ours to the least - survival.

Some times religions create problems.

Some times they solve problems.

Some times they do both.

With modern tech it's not hard to see which ones usually fall into which categories.
