The former first couple's Netflix documentary offers a quiet response to Trump's promises to reinvigorate the industrial heartland. American Factory, set smack in the middle of the industrial heartland, resets expectations about what it means to be a blue-collar middle-class worker in the United States.

The reality isn't so rosy. U.S. factory job growth has accelerated since Trump took office. But growth has slowed this year and U.S. manufacturing output fell 0.4 percent in July amid Trump's trade spat with China. Moreover, a recent study by Economic Innovation Group showed that the largest manufacturing job gains have been in western and Sunbelt states like Texas, Nevada and California. Traditional manufacturing hubs like the industrial Midwest have not seen a similar boost.

And when the jobs do come, they don't look the same as they once did.

$12 an hour plus change, the hourly rate at the Chinese company Fuyao, who opened in a shuttered Ohio GM plant, is not gonna cut it. Take home pay in Ohio would only be $850 a month.

But Trump loves him some underpaid workers. He imports them on H-2B visas so he can get by not paying a living wage to Americans.

Yeah all 90,000 of them are making $12.

Yet you ignore the +12Million elephants in the room.

Here's Obama's gift to Trump .....

"You don't have to do this, Joe, you really don't" ~ Obama

Obama is worried Joe will tarnish his legacy ...... He's right ....

At least Trump's legacy of screwing workers with false promises of tax cuts, lower prices, and better jobs while giving their bosses... all of the above, is safe.

Not to mention his legacy of racism, immigrant bashing, and lying with every other word.... ok, every word.

Thank you Donald Trump for your magic wand, and the great economy!

Anybody have Amazon Prime video? That place is infested with anti-Clinton and anti-Democratic propaganda videos. Makes FOX News look sane, even scholarly, by comparison. I came across one and threw it on to see if there was any value in it (it was worse than excrement) and now I get similar recommendations up the wazoo.

#10 It's the hypocrisy that's being called out, Joe.

"You didn't build that." "Everyone needs to pay their fair share." "I do think at a certain point you've made enough money"

It's the same thing when a member of the political party of "family values" gets caught cheating on his wife.

Or, when a self-proclaimed crusader for feminist causes happens to sexually prey on women.

As for me? If the Obamas can afford to purchase a mansion, have at it.

You didn't build that

...was a phrase used to explain that wealthy business owners couldn't have gotten there without labor, public education and government infrastructure. How the ---- is buying a house at odds with that statement?

Obviously 10,000 square feet isn't too big for Obama, but what's more interesting is that it's on an island which will allegedly be underwater in a few decades.

Looks like they are expecting a few guests in addition to their daughters and Michelle's mom:

Barack and Michelle Obama 'to buy $14.85 million Martha's Vineyard estate from Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck' after spending summer there and falling in love with sprawling beachfront property

The 29-acre estate is on the market includes a 7000sqft house with seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms

Built in 2001, it also has a pool, chef's kitchen, outdoor fireplace, and two guest wings, and a large sundeck

Last year, the Obamas sold their summer home on the island for $15 million, having spent seven out of right summers there while Barack was President

I'm guessing the carbon footprint is vastly larger than that of the average American home, but hey, reducing your carbon footprint is for the little people, not the elite.

Just How Outrageous Is the Obamas' Alleged $65 Million Book Deal?

How Much Did Michelle Obama Get Paid for Her Book 'Becoming'?

Obama is embarking on a 10-city book tour to support her memoir. The tour starts in her hometown of Chicago on November 13. Tickets have been selling out, which has frustrated some fans. However, Obama is donating 10% of tickets for each date to community groups and charities.

Much of the Obamas' record-breaking advance is going to charity, the couple said. Penguin Random House is also donating 1 million books in the Obamas' name to First Book, a nonprofit that provides reading and education materials to kids in the U.S. and Canada.

From the Slate article:

The deal also brings with it something more ineffable, a factor that can come in handy when negotiating for other titles: prestige. There are plenty of best-selling authors who'd love to be able to say that their editor also works with the Obamas.

"I'm guessing the carbon footprint is vastly larger than that of the average American home..."

Great; more Republican Math.

For anyone using real math, the question is this: did the Obamas buy a home that is more efficient per square foot, or less efficient per square foot?

Otherwise, it's just sour grapes that someone else is richer than you.

It looks like the Obamas, who they say paid $14.85 million, got a good deal on the house at any rate:

In August 2015, when it was originally put on the market, the price was set at $22.5 million, but it has been cut by more than $6 million, and currently sits at $16,250,000.

IOW, something positively Trumpian.

"See the difference?"

Sure: you want to pretend total carbon footprint is what matters, instead of footprint per square foot.

My bet would be the Obamas bought a more efficient than average home, especially considering the date built and the systems available. Again, if more efficient, then the real beef is that someone else is richer than you.

Which way would your bet go: more efficient, or less efficient?

I'm not pretending anything. Is assigning a false position to me your best rebuttal?

No, I'm just asking if say, some trailer park guy is using 19 units, and Bill Gates is using 20 units, your conclusion would be that Bill Gates has a larger carbon footprint. My guess is yes, and the concept of footprint per square foot usage suddenly doesn't mean a thing.

Have I got that right?

#14 | POSTED BY NULLIFIDIAN

Actually, I am glad you brought up that quote. What he was saying (which you understandably didn't comprehend) is that it some point you have so much money that it doesn't matter. You can't eat enough food to put a dent in it. Even buying the best house is negligible compared to how much you have. And there is only so many trips you can take. (And then he goes on to say that, at that point, you should think about donating your money to worthwhile causes)

A penny-pincher like yourself probably can't understand the concept. But, he really doesn't care if his house gets swallowed up by the ocean (assuming he is not in it when that happens). His beachfront property just gets beachfront-ier. If it is now worthless, it is no big deal. He just buys a different one.

And unlike people like Trump (and most conservatives), he doesn't peg his value as a person to his monetary net worth. So if he donates money or loses money on a property that he enjoyed or whatever, he is still happy. Unlike conservatives (take Trump as an example), who amass as much wealth as they can (and brag about it incessantly) because they think it will make them happy, but who in reality will always loathe themselves no matter how much wealth they hoard.
