Stocks finished a volatile trading day sharply in the red Friday, after a selloff driven by President Donald Trump's response to new retaliatory tariffs from China and Fed policy.

It is without question his base longs to turn America into dictatorship

And all the DR douche's who "didn't vote for him" are busy doing everything in their power to facilitate/normalize/excuse this desire

"Our great American companies are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for an alternative to China"

Freedom-loving anti-socialism Republicans will excuse and defend this.

Seriously, imagine Obama saying "i hereby order" private American businesses to do anything. The right would ---- so many bricks you could build Trump's vanity wall.

The apoplectic cries from Faux Noise would be defeaning if Obama had done this.

Neither side will back down. Chinese know about how to survive hardship. Americans don't. Enjoy the ride.

Did you also see his tweets about Fed Chairman Powell? "My only question is, who is our bigger enemy, Jay Powell or Chairman Xi?"

So the guy he appointed is an enemy of the United States? Yet another bad hire, huh?

There's a difference between aw-shucks populism and whatever this is. No president should ever talk like this. He's going to get somebody killed. Is that what he wants?

#7 | Posted by cbob at 2019-08-23 02:14 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 3

He's (Trump) going to get somebody killed.

That was running through my mind, Zed. I can just imagine some amped-up nut with a car full of guns waiting for Powell to leave the office.

But Trump has called out so many other "enemies" as well. I would be nervous to be in his crosshairs. I've seen political bullying before, but nothing like this.

Does Trump even know that many of the products that bear his name are being made in China as we speak?

Trump just got a good conversation started. Now we'll see which greedy corporations are pro-American, and which are just selling cheap, Chinese plastic crap to you suckers. Measuring by the hysteria of all the geese honking in this thread, it sounds like you guys are more in China's corner.

You know, it's really sad. Not that long ago, the Democratic Party was all about American workers making products in the USA. Today, they want foreign workers making cheap crap abroad, and illegal workers processing chickens and hogs at home.

Your priorities have changed for the worse. and you wonder why Trump is president.

JFK used the bully pulpit to force the steel industry to roll back prices. No doubt Democrats cheered.

Trump's latest tweets:

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

For many years China (and many other countries) has been taking advantage of the United States on Trade, Intellectual Property Theft, and much more. Our Country has been losing HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year to China, with no end in sight....

....Sadly, past Administrations have allowed China to get so far ahead of Fair and Balanced Trade that it has become a great burden to the American Taxpayer. As President, I can no longer allow this to happen! In the spirit of achieving Fair Trade, we must Balance this very....

...unfair Trading Relationship. China should not have put new Tariffs on 75 BILLION DOLLARS of United States product (politically motivated!). Starting on October 1st, the 250 BILLION DOLLARS of goods and products from China, currently being taxed at 25%, will be taxed at 30%...

...Additionally, the remaining 300 BILLION DOLLARS of goods and products from China, that was being taxed from September 1st at 10%, will now be taxed at 15%. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

"Our Country has been losing HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year to China, with no end in sight...."

Why do right-wingers fall for this nonsense?

It's not America's IP, and it's not America's billions.

We still have private property in this country.

People, especially Trump himself, believing he's the chosen one to get into a trading war with China takes their gullibility and his malignant narcissism to new heights.

I don't even know where to start with the usual apologists in this thread. To pretend this is about Democrats supporting China over the USA is disingenuous at best.

I'm all for making, selling and buying American goods, employing American workers. I'm not for Trump's childish tantrums and attempts to force his will on the world.

He's basically asking for Powell's resignation so that he can appoint some lackey who will cut interest rates on command even though they are so low now that there isn't much left to cut.
Hell, I read that in Denmark they are now going with negative interest rates, banks pay borrowers to borrow. When you read that and don't realize what that means to the world economy then you are just kidding yourself.

That's what Nixon did when he appointed Arthur Burns. I was looking for a link and I found this.

"Trump channels Richard Nixon on the Fed"

#38 | Posted by Ray at 2019-08-24 11:23 AM | Reply

Trump is willing to do anything to help his reelection chances, even crippling the Fed's ability to do anything at all if we get into another 2008-like recession. He claims our economy is still growing, which I totally doubt is true, but during times of growth the Fed should be raising interest rates to build a cushion that they could use in a recession.

#39 | Posted by danni at 2019-08-24 11:35 AM | Reply

Danni

You give the Fed too much credit. They're nothing but a knock-off of Soviet style central planning.
They're running a Ponzi scheme. The supply of credit money has to expand faster than it wants to contract.
It's only a matter of time before they lose the race to stay ahead of credit deflation.

I think the economy will "appear" to look healthy going into the election.
