Amateur satellite trackers say they believe an image tweeted by President Trump on Friday came from one of America's most advanced spy satellites. The image almost certainly came from a satellite known as USA 224, according to Marco Langbroek, a satellite-tracker based in the Netherlands. The satellite was launched by the National Reconnaissance Office in 2011. Almost everything about it remains highly classified, but Langbroek says that based on its size and orbit, most observers believe USA 224 is one of America's multibillion-dollar KH-11 reconnaissance satellites.

From NPR:

"But the image shown in the president's tweet appears to be of far better quality, says Ankit Panda, an adjunct senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists, who specializes in analyzing satellite imagery. "The resolution is amazingly high," says Panda. "I would think it's probably below well below 20 centimeters, which is much higher than anything I've ever seen."

It was not entirely clear where the president's photo came from. Panda believes it was most likely taken by a classified U.S. satellite. But Melissa Hanham, deputy director of the Open Nuclear Network at the One Earth Foundation, believes that the resolution is so high, it may be beyond the physical limits at which satellites can operate. "The atmosphere is thick enough that after somewhere around 11 to 9 centimeters, things get wonky," she says. That could mean it was taken by a drone or spy plane.

Either way, Panda notes that a small redaction in the upper left-hand corner suggests the intelligence community had cleared the image for release by the president."

I agree that he does incredibly stupid things, but no way that Trump accidentally tweeted out a satellite image without the DNI/NRO approving it, but continue your fauxrage.

Who can order the DNI/NRO to approve release of the photo?

That's right, the traitorous moron whose sharts you gargle.

Anyone who doesn't see this as a clear demonstration of Trump's idiocy is an idiot,

The only question is this another damaging thing Trump did to seem important or was he asked the last time he alone with Putin?

Or, they gave the image to Trump already redacted. Anticipating that when it invariably fell into the wrong hands, we wouldn't be letting the REALLY important stuff out.

A demonstration of poor judgement. In his haste to 'spike the ball', so to speak, Trump openly demonstrated our collection capability. Moreover, there were lower resolution photos (civilian satellite imagery) which showed the same scene, albeit at a lower resolution. His release of this pic was wholly unnecessary.

a moment of silence as we defend the indefensible..... there, that's better....the 1000 of other lies/drama/injustice collecting tweets? Not enough time in this lifetime for that amount of silence.

Someone blacked out the security classification in the upper left corner of the document, meaning it probably didn't go through the declassification process prior to being tweeted out. But i agree with the other poster who told you that Trump is the one who can order it declassified anyway. What exactly is your point?

Why?

He gave out classified information to the Russians in a White House meeting without approval.

What makes you think he wouldn't do this without thinking?

Righto, being serious for a moment, I'll agree he's not a traitor nor and idiot, but he is totally unfit for office. He's a loudmouth, obnoxious, insensitive, loose canon that spends more time on twitter and insulting anyone he disagrees with, then running the country, not to mention his absolute lack of knowledge on any pressing issue. But thats what the voters wanted, lol, so be it.

So? It's not surprising that White House comms go theough an advanced satellite like this. That's been the case since satellite communications were born. I don't understand what the story here is supposed to be. Judging by the originator of the thread, I presume it's some sort of TDS related theme.

Because the way this type of information is handled he has to request it (no POTUS is provided raw data or images) and get it in a format that can be used in a tweet.

Trump isn't smart enough to be able to get a picture out of his daily briefing without someone knowing about it and helping him get it into a releasable format.

IMO the DNI/DCIA wanted the public to know that Iran can't hide, Donnie Little Hands was the vehicle through which that was released.

The photo he tweeted had a camera flash in the center and a redaction over the security classification, suggesting this image may not have gone through the traditional declassification process. We are all aware of Trump's desire to "get ---- done" at the expense of process, regulation and even law. We also know he has no genuine respect for protecting government secrets. What makes it so hard for you to believe he would do this?

#19 | Posted by JOE at 2019-09-03 03:23 PM | Reply

The president is a declassification authority by himself, similar to when Obama dropped details hours after a ballsy SEAL raid in a denied area. Presidents can share sensitive info on the whim if they choose to do so, but mostly (I assume) it is with 2nd Party partners rather than the public lol.

Looks like it was given to him as a printout with redactions in place, but I'm surprised that the comments on the picture weren't likewise sanitized...

Rightofcenter perfectly described Trump. Personally, I don't support him, but I do support the good things he does and don't support the bad things he does.
