Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Whoever controls the language gets a big head start in the battle for public opinion. Choosing words carefully is fundamentally important to effective communication. Being able to control language can make a real difference in public opinion. In this contest, the Republicans and big businesses win hands down. The Democrats mouth the words of their adversaries.

Ralph Nader is right.

And back in 2012, ex-Republican Mike Lofgren was explaining this same thing about how Republicans use language to always bludgeon Democrats on the issues ...

Mike Lofgren: A Devil's Dictionary

Lee, Bernays, and Gingrich have all had a lasting impact on the political use of language in America.

If you seek monuments to their accomplishments, you have to look no further than your daily paper or television news program.

It is to them that we owe stories about "collateral damage" rather than "dead civilians."

In that spirit, allow me to offer up my own devil's dictionary of contemporary American political terms.

Lofgren's reference to Lee is Ivy Lee, the founder of modern public relations and the originator of corporate crisis communications. Bernays, is Edward Bernays who wrote the book 'Propaganda', by the way a favorite book of Joeph Goebbels.

And this is why Republicans always win the high ground in these national debates -- they know and understand the power of language and how to use words as blunt instruments that sway public opinion.

Should we stop it or should we let it serve as an example?

Republicans don't have to arm themselves in the war of words. Democrats appear all to eager to provide them with ammunition. It's the same thing with Trump...if he would just shut up, Dems would be pressed to come up with new steaming piles of verbal offal.
