Impeachment is a political process.

In the current hyper-political environment with Pres Trump up for re-election, political justifications to impeach or not will come to the fore.

The Republican-controlled Senate is refusing to stand up to Pres Trump on most (nearly all) matters.

Given that lack of a backbone in the Senate, impeachment by the House likely would not lead to a conviction in the Senate, handing Pres Trump a big boost in his re-election campaign.

@#2 ... Didn't they #ReadTheReport? ...

They probably did, and decided the better approach would be to work to vote Pres Trump out of office and then act upon the report.

Just like the Dems got in 2000 after the Dem controlled Senate lacked the spine to convict Clinton, amirite?

"prioritize their jobs over their principles."

Impeachment can't happen. It will die in the senate to "the grim reaper" mitch.

Very different political scenario back then.

fmr Pres Clinton was not in a campaign for re-election, he was leaving office anyway at the end of his then-current term.

That you deflect to "Dems" instead of fmr Pres Clinton shows you acknowledge that difference.

The thread is about the swing seat Dems losing seats, in 2000 the Dems lost seats in the Senate because they refused to convict.

But keep up with the excuses for not impeaching Trump when Mueller gift wrapped the case for the Dems if it makes you feel better.

I disagree with your premise.

The first sentence of the summary:

...Vulnerable House Democrats in swing districts are resisting pressure to back the launching of an impeachment inquiry against President Trump....

"...resisting pressure to back the launching of an impeachment inquiry against President Trump..."

Did you read the summary for this thread? Did you read the cited article for this thread?

Indeed, many (most?) of the paragraphs in the cited article talk about impeachment.

When fmr Pres Clinton was impeached, his approval rating was in the 60-65% range, among the highest for recent Presidents.

Pres Trump's approval rating is around 43%. Even Rasmussen has Pres Trump's approval at only 46%.

Add in today's hyper-political environment and a presidential re-election campaign, and you have quite a different scenario.

There's a political aspect to impeachment, and that political aspect is quite dependent upon the current political environment.

It really is no surprise to me that swing-state Democrats are against impeachment.

It's not a surprise to me either, nor was it a surprise that a lot of GOP MoCs were against impeaching Clinton in 1998-99, especially those in swing districts.

There should be no problem with having impeachment hearings.

Hold the hearings.

Bring the case forward.

Investigate.

The evidence will determine whether or not to bring articles of impeachment.

Then Vote.

Let the chips fall where they may.

If this is true, they are political cowards.
Like I've said for a longtime the Democratic Party should change their logo to a jellyfish because they are spineless.

The impeachment push will come after Trump wins again.
The idea of another 4 years will drive the TDS into insanity.
The left will make case that we can't afford several million more people taking Zoloft.

Whew. Thanks I needed a good laugh this afternoon.

Here's the more likely scenario: "Mr. President, it appears you have lost the election, but the party stands behind you in your claims that you were cheated, and we're prepared to start a second civil war for you to keep a democrat out of the white house."

Trump has done far worse than nixon. And Nixon didn't have fox news to help him avoid accountability. (Which is why roger ailes then went and created fox news.)

So refute it.

Nixon ordered a burglary to win an election.

Trump gave the russians the ability to blackmail our president to win an election and repaid the russians with favorable policies despite their invasion of sovereign nations.

Nixon never attacked the entire concept of knowable truth or facts. Trump has gaslit the entire nation to the point where there is no such thing as a fact anymore. Just look at what it's done to his supporters. They have to deny trump ever did things that he did on video.

I think what finally got him was using the CIA to intimidate the FBI into stopping the investigation into the coverup of the burglary.

Man the right wing really does live in a bubble dont they?

Trump was lying to the american people about not having contacts with russia, not having business in russia, and putin knew and could prove he was lying. Therefore putin had blackmail power over trump.

This thread is hilarious.

Impeach or get off the pot.

At the end of the day the Mueller report was a political dud and his testimony sealed the deal as a disaster for Democrats. This is precisely why swing-seat Dems oppose impeachment - it's unpopular.

You're just going to have to try and win some elections, Democrats.

I'm not defending the obstruction, as Jeff says, Impeach or get off the pot.

Mueller wrapped that chargeable claim in a bow for Congress but the Dems, who control the process, refuse to even start a formal inquiry.

We did that with Clinton, even with DNA on her dress.

The Senate was controlled by Democrats in those days. That's why there wasnt a conviction. It's going to be the same today. The Senate is controlled by Republicans. They wont vote to convict.

Some here on this blog cant seem to grasp that. To go through impeachment preceedings will only bring up BS the country has already said it is tired of. The only ones wanting impeachment is far left liberals who are still too butthurt they lost an election they thought was in the bag. It reminds them there are other people in the country that dont think like them and they cant just roll over with a majority, mob vote.
