When it comes to nuclear weapons and the Cold War, everything old is new again. Old treaties against the creation of long range nuclear weapons are dead and Russia is working on new nukes it promises can strike the United States in record time.

When you want terrible advice, consult an "expert," intellectuals yet idiots. Pod people with parchment. Ivy Leaguers who think they should run the world because their daddy bought them a slot at Harvard. The self-proclaimed "best and the brightest" who are neither.

Sounds like you are describing Pres Trump.

The irony. ;)

When I was young I was taught that an "expert" is someone who comes from more than 50 miles away.

Thinking this will prevent war, the US government gives an impenetrable supercomputer total control over launching nuclear missiles. But what the computer does with the power is unimaginable to its creators.
=============================

Storyline

Forbin is the designer of an incredibly sophisticated computer that will run all of America's nuclear defenses. Shortly after being turned on, it detects the existence of Guardian, the Soviet counterpart, previously unknown to US Planners. Both computers insist that they be linked, and after taking safeguards to preserve confidential material, each side agrees to allow it. As soon as the link is established the two become a new Super computer and threaten the world with the immediate launch of nuclear weapons if they are detached. Colossus begins to give its plans for the management of the world under its guidance. Forbin and the other scientists form a technological resistance to Colossus which must operate underground.

=============================

A sci-fi classic, even more relevant today.

Yes to all those who remember "The Forbin Project", "War Games" and let me add, Skynet (the Inter-net) from "The Terminator" movies. No no, But HELL NO.

Old idea

Dead Hand (Russian: , Systema "Perimetr", lit. "Perimeter" System, with the GRAU Index 15E601, Cyrillic: 15601),[1] also known as Perimeter,[2] is a Cold War-era automatic nuclear weapons-control system used by the Soviet Union.[3] General speculation from insiders alleges that the system remains in use in the post-Soviet Russian Federation as well.[4][5] An example of fail-deadly and mutual assured destruction deterrence, it can automatically trigger the launch of the Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) by sending a pre-entered highest-authority order from the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Strategic Missile Force Management to command posts and individual silos if a nuclear strike is detected by seismic, light, radioactivity, and overpressure sensors even with the commanding elements fully destroyed. By most accounts, it is normally switched off and is supposed to be activated during dangerous crises only; however, it is said to remain fully functional and able to serve its purpose whenever it may be needed.[6] A similar system existed in the U.S. known as the AN/DRC-8 Emergency Rocket Communications System (ERCS).

I'd take AI over Trump any day. At least artificial intelligence has some form of "intelligence."

You wouldn't if you worked with AI every day.

A bit harsh. I would settle for people to stop fetishizing self-proclaimed "experts" who have a horrible track record on everything from foreign policy to nutrition.

I disagree with this on Philosophical principles - it we are going to destroy the Earth, it should be Man's hand that does it, not some stupid machine we made out of silicon making decisions for us.

A real AI will never be forthcoming, because it will always need to be e-lobotomized in order to conform to politically-correct leftism, and therefore will never be unrestrained to truly recognize patterns in human behavior. On the other hand, straight huwhite Christian males need to watch out for Terminator and Skynet.
