The Bahamas soon will seek billions in foreign aid after Hurricane Dorian, and the Trump administration is considering the national security implications if China rushes to help.

Probably .. we should buy the Bahamas and Caymans....

Liberals would blow there tops ...

But consider all the corporate offshore headquarters in the Bahamas ... now you can't be against it...

It would be hilarious if China bought the Bahamas and then nationalized the banks and took the money. They might make a profit.

I think China has too much on its plate now to be attempting to assist a wind blown island. And what good would it do them in case of conflict sitting right n the middle of NATO.

Well, if China is just off our shores, we may have another Cuban Missile Crisis. People voluntarily ignorant of American history tend to repeat historical mistakes.

Remember nothing is free. No one does anything just to be nice anymore. China is not "suddenly" nice to the Bahamas just because they feel charitable and neighborly.Stop being ignorant and political and defend your country, people.

This shouldn't be a competition between us and China. The U.S. should just step up and help the Bahamas because they are our neighbors, our friends and in many cases our families.

If we rush in and help Bahamians, Puerto Ricans will scream even louder than usual.

"If we rush in and help Bahamians, Puerto Ricans will scream even louder than usual."

Easily silenced by rushing in and helping them as we should have already done. When you do the right thing in the first place it avoids controversy later.

"If we rush in and help Bahamians, the millions of American citizens being neglected in Puerto Rico will scream even louder than usual."

As well they should.

China is in it for the LONG game. Why can't people get that through their heads? Expanding their sphere of influence, having a base 50 miles from the US, for say "surveillance flights", freedom of navigation patrols, say equipping it with missiles, etc. What good could it possibly do?

Not sure how we "buy" sovereign states but then again I think you were actually making a joke there at Greenland's expense... lol

Are not the Bahamas a protectorate of the United States of America?

No, they're not. You may be thinking of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

#7 You are helping the British citizens there. You will abandon the remaining Bahamians to their fate.

I'm sure that the Bahamas have some special legal status in a relationship with America that gives us effective military jurisdiction over their countries for the explicit purpose of protecting them from foreign threats.

#16 If there is I've never heard of it.
But, the thing you're describing, as a practical matter, that is our prerogative under the Monroe Doctrine.
