Jemele Hill: In the summer of 2018 Kayvon Thibodeaux, who was then ranked as the top high-school football player in America, visited Florida A&M University, in Tallahassee. When a player of Thibodeaux's caliber visits a perennial football power"say, Alabama"it's called Wednesday. But when he visits a historically black college or university (HBCU) like Florida A&M, it threatens to crack the foundation on which the moneymaking edifice of college sports rests.

Interesting read that I haven't finished yet but I have to comment on this:

and it should have been a moment of fear for the predominantly white institutions whose collective multibillion-dollar revenues have been built largely on the exertions of (uncompensated) black athletes.

Are white players compensated? Are they not all given similar or identical scholarships as compensation?

I noticed another line further in about uncompensated labor that also seemed to suggest a difference between black players and white players.

"whose collective multibillion-dollar revenues have been built largely on the exertions of (uncompensated) black athletes."

Define "largely".

In my world, that's much more than half. The claim doesn't pass the smell test.

"The HBCUs probably felt that racism was so deeply entrenched that white people would never go after black kids en masse," Rhoden told me recently. "Had HBCUs known then what we all know now, maybe they could have figured out a way to say, How can we, with the window we've got left, make a great product, so when white people finally get religion, we'll still be in a good position?'"

It's becoming apparent that the issue isn't exploitation of young black athletes by "white" colleges or programs, but that HBCUs aren't getting the cut they think they're entitled to.

More revolutionarily, perhaps they could disrupt the reign of an "amateur" sports system that uses the labor of black folks to make white folks rich.

And basically that's it. It seems they think they're owed the revenue flow with promises and hopes for the athlete's development and futures afterwards.

White colleges wouldn't turn a profit if they kept black football players with grant and scholarships out. White people have some football skillz but not like black people. The South would rather fight a war that decimated their GDP than keep the shop running w/o slaves.

"The South Shall Rise Again" is a cry to laziness on the Southern man's part. They would obligate a black man to slave for them by picking their cotton rather than doing their own work by setting the slaves, and pick their own cotton.

It's the same principle now. White man, racism isn't profitable. You want money in your conservative coffers? You have to suck up the racism. Because you can't damn well win football or basketball games without the black man.

Everyone know a white man can't jump.

Are we headed back to segregation at the black's requests?

It's adorable when the white left and right agree on the racial question.

I'm assuming you don't mean this in a good way...

What's your take on the article?

But ... that's where the white girls are!

"A. encouraging black people to rebuild their communities is literally the opposite of racism, but OK."

Not so sure about that.

When it's white people and Boaz saying "You black people have to your communities, it's a black problem for blacks to figure out, keep whites out of it" then it's literally racism.

The reason it's racism is whites don't stay out of it. They're part and parcel of it. They're they white Section 8 slumlords of black communities, the white Republican governors poisoning the water of black communities, the white CEOs of banks skimming fees off black communities EBT purchases.

Poor black communities are corporate welfare for rich whites. That's their purpose.

Black people fight like hell to get into major colleges, fight like hell to integrate college and professional sports....then re[-segregate colleges and sports. I support black equality but that isn't the path towards it. It's like moving backwards i time and calling it the future.

Here is an examples for you. In 2017 University of Alabama's revenue was $174M, total profit was $15.6M. The football program earned $108M revenue/$45.9M profit.

The idea of compensating players seemx to me to be totally separate from re-segregating college sports. I'm totally fine with compensating athletes, coaches earn huge salaries so should players who, with just one major injury, could lose their potential income in the pros overnight.

It's dumb to use colleges as the developmental leagues for the pros.

This is like the field goal in football: If it didn't exist, and someone proposed a new rule to score half a touchdown by kicking the ball through some rectangle in the end zone, people would say it's stupid and diminishes the purity of the game. And they'd be right.

We're headed back to segregation because your klan has been so cruel to minorities for so long that they're finally getting the message.

If someone wants to make the argument that NCAA football and basketball players deserve to be payed like 'professional' athletes, I am sympathetic. Schools and corporate America makes billions of dollars off their efforts. But if someone wants to argue that this 'exploitation' is race based, then I disagree. All athletes, white, black, latino, European, etc., are taken advantage of pretty much equally by the current system. Reform the NCAA and college athleticism. But let's not frame this particular issue in solely racial terms.

Sounds like they want to segregate white people.

Reality check. If there are multi[-million dollar contracts out there then talented black
athletes will sign them and all your worries about equality, etc. be damned. The most racist thing I can think of is to object to a black athlete not making the best deal for his talents that he can find, you may think that is wrong but millions of black aspiring athletes are motivated by his actions.
Does Sarena Williams help or harm the black community. I feel strongly that she is a positive and an inspiration to millions. I'm glad she earns millions of dollars. I respect her and just wish I could play as well as she does.

HBCU's are a thing of the past anyway. They're closing more and more of them. Segregated schools deserve to die. ALL of them.
