Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

In early Spring of this year, an Air National Guard crew made a routine trip from the U.S. to Kuwait to deliver supplies. What wasn't routine was where the crew stopped along the way: President Donald Trump's Turnberry resort, about 50 miles outside Glasgow, Scotland.

Trump always looking for new ways to steal.

The inquiry is part of a broader, previously unreported probe into U.S. military expenditures at and around the Trump property in Scotland. According to a letter the panel sent to the Pentagon in June, the military has spent $11 million on fuel at the Prestwick Airport " the closest airport to Trump Turnberry " since October 2017, fuel that would be cheaper if purchased at a U.S. military base. The letter also cites a Guardian report that the airport provided cut-rate rooms and free rounds of golf at Turnberry for U.S. military members.

Taken together, the incidents raise the possibility that the military has helped keep Trump's Turnberry resort afloat " the property lost $4.5 million in 2017, but revenue went up $3 million in 2018.

"The Defense Department has not produced a single document in this investigation," said a senior Democratic aide on the oversight panel. "The committee will be forced to consider alternative steps if the Pentagon does not begin complying voluntarily in the coming days."

Isn't one of the most widely famous cliches from politically-tinged investigations past "Follow the money"? Trump's greed will surely be the end of him, but in ways many don't yet understand. For those who might think these snippets are exaggerated aberrations easily explained away as dozens of one-offs, these particular lines of misappropriation appear to be clearly drawn so that even Trump's myopic base can discern their meanings regardless of any redefinition by the Donald.

It would be one thing if all of these "wonderful" Trump properties - which our President and Vice President must enjoy regardless of their geographical inconvenience - were wildly successful and unquestioned destinations worthy of special visits. But it's completely another when their (Turnberry and Doral) revenues have plummeted since Trump jumped into politics in 2015, and by infusing them with US taxpayer dollars at every chance, he's lining his own pockets and performing unpaid infomercials at the same time.

And the grift goes on....

Clarification: This particular set of findings is more about Trump's personal business interest in keeping this airport afloat because it's closing would negatively impact his resort more so than him profiting from directing stopping-over Air Force personnel to his resort some 20+ miles away...

...the military has spent $11 million on fuel at the Prestwick Airport " the closest airport to Trump Turnberry " since October 2017....
unless he's made a backroom deal for a kickback on the fuel purchases....

Air Force folks love their golf. I'll blame the golf-crazy chairforce leadership on this one.

Air Force folks love their golf.

The location lacked a U.S. base and was dozens of miles away from the crew's overnight lodging at the Turnberry resort.

Had the crew needed to make a stop in the U.K., Lakenheath Air Base is situated nearby in England. The layover might have been cheaper, too: the military gets billed at a higher rate for fuel at commercial airports.

One crew member was so struck by the choice of hotel " markedly different than the Marriotts and Hiltons the 176th maintenance squadron is used to " that he texted someone close to him and told him about the stay, sending a photo and noting that the crew's per diem allowance wasn't enough to cover food and drinks at the ritzy resort.

It doesn't appear that the crew had the time to golf, just get their rest and continue on their way.

This was an abnormal stop that makes no strategic sense. Unless you look at the money involved and who benefited from it being spent as it was.

From initially predicting people being frog-marched from the White House in 2017 to whining about golf, Tony Truther never fails to deliver hilarity.

It's been awhile since I read a more Air Force quote than this one. Wow. Lol.

My educated guess is that the pilot is a Trumper and made the executive decision to detour, guy might have escaped into retired by now (since it's under investigation). It would be surprising to read that Trump got involved in individual squadron military mechanisms to reroute flight plans.

-Not an aviator, though.

I don't believe that's what happened at all. It was more likely Trump asked someone (Chief of Staff?) "Is there a way we can help out this airport in Scotland (that's crucial to my nearby resort's business)?" Trump doesn't do details, he just paints big picture ideas and let's others figure out how to get them done. Someone found out that diverting some flights into the private airport would help its bottom line and Trump personally doesn't have to spend a dime of his own money. That's a win-win if there ever was one.

Former military intelligence officer Malcolm Nance has already said that the "official" Air Force response will be that these stops were a feasibility study of logistics if the military had to help secure and/or deliver support for Trump Turnberry if the President might need to
for whatever reason.

Or at least that's what I think he said, but it made much more sense than an unsigned document from NOAA chastising their own Alabama personnel who were absolutely correct.

And now the Pentagon is about to sign a new five-year refueling contract with the airport near Trump's Scotland golf course, when they could stop at any of five current American Air Force bases in the UK where fuel and housing costs for crews would be less, but then that money wouldn't be going directing into the pockets of Donald J. Trump and his family. Note that the Air Force has been refueling at his regional airport under a previously undisclosed contract which was signed shortly after Trump took office in 2017, but that was only a two-year contract which is running out.

And it keeps getting better:

U.S. Military Forging New Contract To 2024 To Refuel Near Trump's Turnberry Resort: Report

Prestwick's refueling contract with the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is about to expire. Total payments to the airport since 2017 could total as much $21 million by the time the contract ends, The Scotsman reported.

But the airport has a new, longer contract beginning October 1 and running through the end of September 2024, the newspaper reported. The value is yet to be determined. But the new deal would involve supplying some 12.4 million gallons of aviation fuel " about 3 million more than the current deal, according to The Scotsman.

The U.S. military is currently Prestwick's biggest customer. According to records viewed by The Scotsman, Prestwick was paid $11 million over just six months from last October to March.

I guess the key question would be if the USAF had contracts with this airport before donald was president.

If they did, no big deal.

Spin it any way you want Trumpsters, it stinks and you know it. I honestly would not respect myself if I carried the water of any politician the way Y'all do all the time. Do you have no self-respect at all? How do you look in the mirror? You do realize that even your children will notice what snivelling cowards you are. Don't you care what your children think about you? I honestly think there is a disease rampant im America today that removes the need for self-repect from otherwise normal people. Trumpitis, it's a terrible disease that only honesty can cure.

Amazing how the party of "every nickel counts! Defund PBS!" has fallen to the party of "meh" over millions of dollars being spent unnecessarily to prop up a failing business venture by POTUS.

And no, "all Presidents get rich" isn't going to fly on this.

#22 | Posted by jpw at 2019-09-08 08:39 AM | Reply

"all Presidents get rich" may be true but most don't do it on the taxpayers dime. Trump though does. He is, without a doubt, the most corrupt President in history. The name Trump will become a synonym for corruption. Trump doesn't see it as corruption, he sees it as opportunity that others were just too stupid to see because they were blinded by conscience and he is immune to that blindness.

Some carry on the way they do because they personally hate some of the posters who come here.

You're asking about issues of children and self-respect. Most of the people you are talking about have neither.

#10 | POSTED BY SHEEPLESCHISM

Of course it won't. Republicans don't care about corruption. In fact they applaud it as long as a Republican is benefitting (another way to "own the libs").

If Republicans had any moral fiber, this might take Trump. But, if they had any moral fiber then there are dozens of other things that WOULD have taken him down already.

Hell, they might even have gotten to the point where he could wear a tan suit and they wouldn't even care.

OK, the real story. These guys are AF Reserve, and to maintain their ratings they have to have flight time. They got their mission and delivered their cargo. While they take their mandatory break and the plane is inspected and refueled, there may be a mission to return cargo. If not it is RTB,(return to base). The rout selected is discretionary to the pilots and air command. Silence is consent by command. Hey, if I was one of those officers and had the opportunity of staying in a five star hotel and maybe a round at a first rate course, I would take it. We had the facilities, contract for fuel, and the additional flight time was minuscule considering the range of the aircraft is about 5000 miles w/o auxiliary tanks. As far as the cost of lodging, pilots get an allowance for lodging and if that amount exceeds the allowance the pilots and crew have to submit paper work to recoup the expense. The paper work is out there, you can speculate or you can check on facts.

"The rout selected is discretionary to the pilots and air command."

Not really. Routes for transport aircraft (and tankers) are built at TACC, and optimized to conserve fuel. At least for the AD guys...I guess the guard could be different. Bombers have much greater freedom to determine their route of flight...but no say in what airports they land at

Shannon Airport in Ireland is a routine stopping point for US aircraft transiting back and forth, and it's not a military facility either. Neither is Frankfurt Hanh, which is an hour's drive from Ramstein...maybe 10-15 minutes in flight.

#27 | Posted by madbomber at 2019-09-09 02:32 PM | Reply

#27 | Posted by madbomber You would not believe some of the things the Air Reserve and especially the Air Guard do while doing their flight time. My buddy used to fly to Atlanta in a C130 with two other crews with their POVs and have a great time down in the underground. They only needed two people to stay sober. I always liked doing space A when traveling cheep. If you hang out in the terminal you can pick up flights to Alaska, or many other places, the deal is the Guard/reserve flights are usually not announced till an hour before flight. Want to go to Korea free?Flights available every day. Pango Pango? Australia? New Zealand? Flights happen every week.
