There's a devastating shortage of men who have their act together, according to a new study that may not be so surprising to all the single ladies out there. Research now suggests that the reason for recent years' decline in the marriage rate could have something to do with the lack of "economically attractive" male spouses who can bring home the bacon, according to the paper published Wednesday in the Journal of Family and Marriage.

--the lack of "economically attractive" male spouses

Men could help themselves by going to trade schools instead of 4-year schools and getting good-paying jobs. Are these women willing to "settle" for an electrician rather than waiting for a higher-status "professional?"

Since 1975, practically all the gains in household income have gone to the top 20% of households.

Which is why only 1 in 5 guys is "economically attractive."

Do the Reaganomics Math.

No woman is going to settle for you, Nullifidian.

Your advice is probably only useful to drive women away.

Heck, you couldn't even make it work with Andrea, a mattress.

Oh thank goodness all these years of women telling me I look like a Troll in need of a bridge it's not that I am literally unattractive just economically unattractive and they are just gold diggers that makes me feel better about myself.

I remember my single years after a 21-year marriage. I was quite naive but it didn't take me long to figure out the game. Women who were mid 30s to mid 40s and an occasional cougar here and there. The one thing in common most had, wasn't a lack of education or income, but nearly one of them had personal finances in total shambles. I remember this one woman I was introduced to by a friend, owned her own home, had a decent business, but asked me after 2 dates to help her pay to fix the air conditioning at her home. The bill was $300.

There's a lot of truth in that. I never went to college, I started in an apprenticeship at the pipe fitters local union. Of course I continued to build on my career but at 50 I'm pulling down 200k/year in salary and bonuses with more in stock options too. The biggest challenge I face today is finding people who are willing to take on additional responsibilities other than just their job title. It's out there if people want to work for it. But you have to be willing to work hard and get dirty.

Not exactly ... its short term .... to understand the issue even more ..

Women didn't like how men were, so they demanded they change. Men changed, and now that they have, women don't like what they've changed into. Women want soft, emotional, high achieving, career focused tough guys who don't get angry, remember anniversaries, bring flowers, and can splurge on expensive meals and trips, without working all weekend, and still make it to little Johnny's ballet recitals.

Contemporary woke feminism doesn't care about equality. It demands that men strip themselves of their toxic masculinity, their desire to compete and achieve, to become more stereotypically femme, so that women don't have to do all the emotional heavy lifting. Okay. But on the other hand, women want men to be high-achieving, breadwinning earners, who are professionally successful, and, if Tinder is any indication, taller than them as well.

The only problem is that these toxic characteristics are essential for success in the marketplace. When men let them go, all those things that these traits facilitated fall by the wayside as well. Men are emasculated for not achieving just as they are demeaned for those attributes that enable achievement. Wtf, yo?

That's great. My story is very similar. Right out of high school I joined the Navy and because of my high AVSFAB score, I had the option for their six year enlistment program which guaranteed one year training in their advanced electronics program. It was the equivaltent of a trade school. I did go to college with classes on the ship at sea and with the GI bill, but I did it just for the free money. The college education did nothing at all to promote my careeer.

I retired at age 57 not making near as much as you, but it was a very healthy 6 figures after working as an Electronic Tech on offshore oil rigs. I will have two pensions in another 1.5 years, currentlhy drawing disabled veteran's pay, and full Social Security disability and was able to stash most of my salary for the last several years I worked.

College did not help me make a dime more.

I never say college as a way for me to increase my income, that's why I never went. That and I'd have to borrow money to go. The oldest son did a tour in the ME and has GI money if he decides to go.

Of my three boys one got a college education, the youngest. The oldest I helped into the industry as an pressure equipment inspector. . My middle son has a mental handicap but still manages to make around $12/hr working at the casino. I guess the point is , if you want it, it's available. Even for my son who has trouble just making everyday decisions you and I would deem as simple, second nature.

That's another excellent point to look at a trade school or joining the military. But don't get me wrong -- not all military results in a trade school equivalent education. Most 4 yeare enlistment options have a 1-3 months school after basic training and it's primarily for operations -- not theory, troublshooting, and repair to a component level. For a trade school type education, one has to enlist for 6 years. But my thought was that one of the extra two years was school and two months of it was leave so I actually enlisted for only 10 months more.

My HS offered vocational training in two areas: auto shop and carpentry. But I understand vocational training in high schools are becoming a thing of the past. That's too bad because that meant no cost to the student.

Personally, I think women have brought some of this on themselves.

Marriage, growing up, having children, and figuring out how to have a regular income is part of a cycle.

Frankly...getting laid regularly, which has been an incentive for marriage, no longer applies.

There's plenty enough women who will do it for free no strings attached.

People (especially men) are maturing much slower (if at all) than 20-50 years ago.

This sexual freedom is coming at a tremendous cost to society and most especially to women.

BillJohnson just said that when women are granted sexual freedom, they tend to have fewer children.

We should give that time to sink in.

Sounds like women want a Type A breadwinner at work who comes home and cooks dinner while listening to them recap today's episode of Ellen.

Good luck with that.

These women should track down my brother. He's single and his life is very much in order. He'd be a great catch for any middle-aged woman seeking a stable man. That he's a genuinely good and nice person only adds to his value.
