Nick Saban gets it. He understands fans want to see Alabama plays tougher non-conference opponents, but that's not necessarily in his control. Scheduling is a tremendous challenge in college football, especially when you're the premiere program in America. After a sweltering home opener vs. New Mexico State on Saturday, Saban stepped back on his pedestal and called out Alabama's student section.

....
It's obvious Saban doesn't appreciate looking into the stands at Bryant Denny from the sideline and seeing empty seats on gameday. But with college football attendance dwindling nationwide for five consecutive years, it's difficult to imagine it'll stop.

Who can afford it anymore?

Same with baseball ... MLB baseball attendance has been declining for something like 15 years straight.

We're the richest country in the world, and yet 80% of the population lives paycheck to paycheck ... and half the population can't afford an unexpected $400 emergency expense.

This stuff ain't hard to understand.

Student ticket prices .... $15 ... they will drink more beer before halftime.

I got into Bruin games at the Coliseum for free. But that is still a good deal.

Yet have larger homes, more cars, more electronics, use more energy, and more than 2X the CO2 footprint ... than any other population in the world.

Choices.

The still have "FREE" ... but you need to qualify.

That being said, UCLA had "literally" no one in the stands yesterday.

You'd think Saban would be happier ...

You're pushing false choices.

College students go to college football games, but they're still in college and are, oh, I don't know ... not working.

The overwhelmingly majority of people in the stands are working stiffs -- and they can't afford it like they once could.

Not, hard.

And whose fault is that? It's the "higher" education aristocracy that leeches off the taxpayers and ratchets up tuition while hiring useless bureaucrats, diversicrats, deans, etc.

Attendance is also declining at MLB baseball games ...

Is that also the fault of the "higher education aristocracy" on university campuses?

It's interesting to watch Nullifidian slowly -- and I do mean slowly -- come to the realization of what's changed in America as a result of the fact that
Since 1975, practically all the gains in household income have gone to the top 20% of households.

LSU students used to get free tickets.. I could score good tickets for a fifth of K&B brand vodka... about $3.99 a bottle at the K&B drugstore. Anyone who knows what K&B is knows I'm telling my age.

Nick Saban can ----- off.

Nobody owes him a damn thing.

His job is to win. Not worry about the stands or if the fans are cheering like he thinks they should.

With the costs doing what they are, and powderpuff opponents early in the season....BFD if there some empty chairs.

His payroll checks aren't going to bounce

No they're not but Sabin knows what makes his athletes tick. And playing for a dead crowd isn't going to boost the teams morale. Saban is one of the most intelligent coaches there has ever been and I'd imagine he knows what he's talking about.

I agree it probably confuses his players to see empty seats in the stadium.

Most players on the team come from very good high school programs that rarely had empty seats at the stadium during those games. They can't identify with empty seats.

But Sabin can still STFU if he wants to criticize empty seats at games with 50+!point margins in the score.

Because they are actually paid by their performance.

Unlike, well every other employ in the public university.

If his job is to help his players, to win, and you agree with this, I don't understand your STFU perspective.

If he thinks it helps his team perform better, he should say whatever the damn he wants say. He said with "all due respect".

So what about the students that do go? What about Clemsons standing room only crowd?

See you take one thing, and paint the whole student body with it, they get that loan money and spend it on beer ....

"College Students Using Loans For Spring Break, Alcohol, Drugs"

I used mine for the first two (and schooling) during my senior year, and paid it all back, with interest. What's the problem?

LOL......"with all due respect" is not a license to say what I want.

And nick Saban works for the university....not the other way around.

Saban can criticize the fans for being disrespectful but not for not filling a chair when it's 95 degrees and a 50 point blowout.

His players can get over it.

Student section tickets are usually free for students, and how many successful programs do it when there is high demand is that all students are entered into a lottery system to win their seat for the game.

Those early season games against cupcakes are tough for fans. I got some of the worst sunburn of my life watching FSU play the Raging Cajuns or some such team, almost 8 years ago...

Attendance in MLB ballparks have been trending down for 15 years ...

Obvious something bigger is going on beside one narrow argument against tenured faculty staff salaries.

In the glory days when the Noles were blowing out teams, the student alumni association gave extra loyalty points to students who stayed at the games, to be used for future premier game tickets. At the end of the game, you swing by their booths on the way out of the stadium to swipe your ticket pass card, get those loyalty points, and your score would put you in a higher tier to get tickets to those top tier matchups later in the season.

The NFL gave up on blacking out games that did not sell out. The extortion didn't work, attendance is dropping and they are desperate to keep the fans hooked.

$503 was the average cost of a family to attend an NFL game in 2016. Roger Goodell has told teams that they "need to build new monster stadiums (using taxpayer money mostly) in order to jack up ticket prices. www.nydailynews.com

Pro sports and now even College sports is starting to price itself out of business.

Real wages declining and health care eating up more and more of what's left does not bode well for them.

Alabama students fail to realize just how special of a time this is for their school's football program. Soak it up while you can. This utter dominance can't last forever.

I'm surprised Bama has as many seats filled as they do.

All these jobs in Bama that Trump and company are crowing about will not even raise a family above the poverty line.

Haha, when I was typing it up I was definitely thinking how similar that loyalty point program was to a "social credit score," but for placement toward acquiring football tickets.
