Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Nearly 800,000 people commit suicide each year - more than those killed by war and homicide or breast cancer, the World Health Organisation said on Monday, urging action to avert the tragedies.

Overall, the global suicide rate fell by nearly 10 per cent from 2010 to 2016, with the western Pacific showing declines of nearly 20 percent and Southeast Asia registering a decline of only 4.2 per cent.

The Americas meanwhile was the only region that showed an uptick in suicides, with a six per cent hike over the six-year period.

"We know that in the region of the Americas, access to firearms and guns is an important means of suicide," Alexandra Fleischmann of WHO's mental health division, told reporters in Geneva in answer to a question.

The most common methods of suicide are hanging, gunshots and " especially in rural areas " the ingestion of poisonous pesticides.

Most suicides happen in low- and middle-income countries, where most of the global population lives, but rates are higher in wealthier countries, the WHO report found.

After Guyana, Russia registered the world's second-highest rate, with 26.5 suicides per 100,000 people.

Also figuring high on the list were Lithuania, Lesotho, Uganda, Sri Lanka, South Korea, INDIA and Japan, as well as the United States, which registered 13.7 suicides per 100,000 people.

In almost every country, men are more likely than women to commit suicide.

Only in five countries " Bangladesh, China, Lesotho, Morocco, and Myanmar " do women commit suicide at a higher rate than men.

I believe a person's life, like anything he owns, is his to do with as he chooses. No one should be butting their noses into other people's business and telling them what they should do with the things they own, including their lives.

Suicide on the rise in the USA.

The more you have a winner-take-all economy, the more people kill themselves when they dont win.

If you have a more sane, ethical economy, where you dont have to be a winner to avoid massive suffering, the fewer suicides you'll have.

In america, you're either at the top or your life is constant struggle, stress, and worry.

I get that, but many people with suicidal ideation are going through a temporary setback that can be overcome with the right intervention. It's one thing to have a terminal illness. Quite another to lose your job, or even go through a divorce. Others are mentally ill but can benefit from treatment. I've known a few, and I'm glad they're still here.

You know what the worst part of suicide is.

It's the sorrow and anguish people who loved you feel, at themselves, for not being able to be there for you, to help you, to make you see you're not alone, this feeling will pass, you can overcome this.

You know another reason I can't stand conservatives. Because they make people who don't fit in or can't fit in, feel so tormented, ashamed, angry and depressed, that they can't see any other solution to their problems.

You know another reason why I hate religion. Because now the family, friends and loved ones are worried the victim is in hell.

Suicide is awful.

Unless it's in order to free yourself from terminal illnesses.

This is what you don't understand about most suicides; they aren't connected to people.

There is something about religion (any religion) that keeps people together, not that its true there is a god, but its social.

It was before my time. But, interracial marriage had its obstacles.

I get you're trying to join in on the dog pile.

But. Humans do cause other humans to commit suicide.

Something like not letting gays get married or preventing a family from adopting, could exacerbate a situation, a depression, which could end up causing someone to commit suicide.

Unemployment can also cause someone to commit suicide.

???

It's the democrats who are continually shoving their idealisms down the country's throat. They want to tell me if I can own a gun or not. They want to tell me that illegal immigrants have a right to be here. They want to tell me I have to pay for them. Some want to tell me I shouldn't have the right eat meat. Some want to tell me what kind of car I should be able to drive. They want to tell me to reduce my carbon footprint while ignoring their own.

The list goes on and on.

No you're broke dick poor because the politicians in your state wish the south won the civil war and have been oppressing your people for hundreds of years, locked up your dad for selling a plant, your mom worked 3 jobs to pay the rent, your faucet water stunted your brain development, and your schools suck because rich people needed tax cuts.

That does suck if that happened to you but man you got to get past it. Wallowing in self pity will never get you anywhere. There are decent paying jobs out there if you are willing to work hard and don't mind getting dirty.

I would say economics can be impacted by politics, significantly in some ways. Not that economics results from politics.

Putting it that way means it entirely results from politics...and anyone who thinks that is an idiot.

You almost got that right.....LOL

Once again you prove your historical ignorance. The first States to come into existence only came about when agriculture could produce a surplus, freeing a portion of the population from having to grow food and do other things, like politics, arts, industrial crafts, military arts, science, etc.

"US home prices are soaring so high that people can't afford to have kids
Rising home prices correlate with falling birth rates becuase they crowd out childcare financing."

where are home prices so unaffordable?

answer? the bluest pockets of our country. The more urban areas, especially the most expensive urban areas....are all blue, run almost entirely by democrats.

and you want to blame those "economics" on "politics"?

And these are the areas where the economy is roaring along.....which, BTW, is why the home prices are so high and out of reach for a lot of people (not having as many kids anymore)...right?

Its it beginning to sink in how stupid your argument has been all along?

It's the democrats who are continually shoving their idealisms down the country's throat.

As opposed to the Republicans?

Perhaps you should practice some of that nonpartisanship you were so fond of claiming.

#93 | POSTED BY GOATMAN

I don't even know how to take this petty list of grievances seriously.

You've had liberals in your real life, on the streets, tell you you can't own a gun? Or are you simply reacting to social media?

Both parties support illegal immigrants. You'd think someone who claims to be nonpartisan would see that. But, perhaps you're swept up in the "open borders" hysteria.

More of your taxes go to paying pensions, corporations, and the MIC, than to welfare for illegal immigrants. But again, you're being hysterical.

No one is preventing you from eating meat. Driving the car you want or polluting as much as you want.

You're doing a great chicken little impersonation. They told me I can't eat meat! They told me I can't own guns! I can't pollute and a negligible amount of my taxes go to programs for illegal immigrants!! What ever shall I do!!

Your life must be devastating. How have you made it 60+ years? How will you go on living?

I mean, people are actually being denied the right to marry who they want, use the restrooms of their choosing, go to the doctor for medical procedures....

But PETA is just making your life unlivable!

Just ramming their naked activist agenda down your unwilling throat!

I'll say it: "Don't commit suicide!"
Get help. Talk to someone.

But don't kill yourself and ruin your spouse's life, your kids' lives, make it tough on scores or even hundreds or thousands of people.

It's an awful awful thing.

And women are closing the gap, sadly.

A megachurch pastor in Southern California known for his mental health advocacy died by suicide on Monday, church officials said in a statement.

Jarrid Wilson had been a pastor with Harvest Christian Fellowship Church for about 18 months. In 2016, he founded Anthem of Hope, a Christian organization meant to "amplify hope" for those struggling with mental health and substance use issues.
