The Secretary of Commerce threatened to fire top employees at NOAA on Friday after the agency's Birmingham office contradicted President Trump's claim that Hurricane Dorian might hit Alabama, according to three people familiar with the discussion.

What is Wilbur Ross doing meddling with weather employees?

He's like Monty Burns - he just won't die.

So let me see if I understand what has happened here...

The NWS issues a forecast for Hurricane Dorian. The forecast does not show the "cone of uncertainty"[1] affecting Alabama.

Pres Trump (who seems to have an affinity for Alabama, but that's a different thread) allegedly uses his trademark sharpie to extend the cone of uncertainty into Alabama, showing that the eye of Dorian could hit Alabama.

The good citizens of Alabama, heeding Pres Trump's comments, flood their local officals, who then flood the local NWS offices, asking what is going on.

The Alabama NWS office issues a statement saying that the forecast does not have the cone on uncertainty hitting Alabama.

Pres Trump doubles down, repeating his false information.

[long story short]

Now it seems that Pres Trump, with his usual inability to tolerate any gainsaying, is looking to fire someone, anyone, in NOAA (the parent of NWS) because NWS people in Alabama had the audacity to reassure the good people of Alabama that they were not in a possible projected path for the eye of the fierce hurricane Dorian.

Do I have that correct?

1- cone of uncertainty - the NWS term of the possible paths of the eye of the hurricane.

"Precious hours were wasted": Trump's doctored map affected hurricane forecasters
arstechnica.com

...On Wednesday, when President Donald Trump was showing off a doctored hurricane forecast in the White House Oval Office, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center were mortified.

It was a critical moment for the federal tropical cyclone experts because Hurricane Dorian had begun to show signs of re-intensifying"it would later become a major hurricane again"and its track appeared increasingly likely to bring the storm's center ashore somewhere in the Carolinas. Two sources in the Miami-based hurricane center told Ars that Trump's "update" on Hurricane Dorian effectively paralyzed operations.

After Trump spoke, the forecasters' cell phones buzzed with incessant distractions. Media briefings were stopped for the afternoon. "Precious hours were wasted," one official at the center told me. "We aren't going to put out bad forecasts, but we need to keep the eye on the ball here."

Instead of warning residents of the Southeastern United States about a re-strengthening Dorian just as it posed its greatest threat to the nation, the media subsequently pivoted to cover Trump's preposterous attempt to re-write the history of Dorian's forecast. As an American, I felt embarrassed. As a meteorologist, I was livid....

And now it appears, with Americans lives having been at stake, those who were trying to protect those lives may be fired by the one who has sworn to protect those very same American lives.

Perhaps it was pointed out Trump has actually committed a crime by doctoring that chart. So now his deplorables have gone into defense mode.

He doesn't need a defense. His detractors just cry and whine, but the dems are too cowardly to do anything about it. Trump is forever safe.

@#8 ... but the dems are too cowardly to do anything about it. Trump is forever safe. ...

You really should ask the Republicans in the Senate about doing something about Pres Trump. They are the cowards.

Geesh, Sen McConnell has openly deferred to Pres Trump, saying he won't do anything unless Pres Trump approves of it.

Can you say "Constitutional checks and balances," I knew you could.

So why can't the leader of the Senate, Sen McConnell, say it?

That is what I presume. The GOP has something on every one of their ---------- representatives, but they really just do it for the money and power.

Can't wait until purge day!
