Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Big Labor has had big success getting politicians to raise the minimum wage, despite warnings that it could lead to more automation. Well, what do you know, now the Oregon AFL-CIO wants voters to limit self-checkout kiosks in grocery stores. The union still needs the attorney general's sign-off on the paperwork it submitted last week and 112,020 signatures to get this initiative on the 2020 ballot. But under the proposed Grocery Store Service and Community Protection Act, Oregon groceries could operate no more than two self-service checkout stations at a time. Violators would pay hefty fines.

Free Market? Not so much .... I recall Danforth, in the LA not buying solar power thread, saying Unions don't make decisions for Government/Companies ... here's a sign they do, upon which he will promptly deflect.

Winn Dixie food store near me put in self-service checkout lanes but they took them back out because too many people weren't checking all their items.

whatever....self-checkout lines are everywhere. You make up the most ridiculous anecdotal ---- just to make a point.

But as far as Oregon goes....they vote for whatever they want. If they want to limit self-service checkouts....they can have what they want.

Hey, I use them at Home Depot all the time but that Winn Dixie did take them out for that reason.

If this law passes we'll look back/at them the same way we would look at laws today if we had passed the Blacksmith Protection act which mandated that for every tire sold, at least one wheel would have to have a horseshoe mounted to it by a blacksmith. Or the Operators Protection act that would require 80% of all telecommunications be connected by a live operator, and not automated switching.

The first would be laughable, like the grocery story... But the second would have severely hindered and most likely prevented the whole Telephony and Internet revolution that we enjoy today.

If this passes in the near future when we walk up to a register with a list of items we've tagged in the store, pay for it, and watch as our pre-packed carriage rolls out with all our goods in it ready to go for us, we'll look at Oregon like quaint hillbillies still scanning each item they bought.

Big Labor's Minimum-Wage Remorse

POSTED BY ANDREAMACKRIS

Have you ever worked a job at minimum wage?

Here in Idaho they put the self check out stands in lots of stores. The local Albertsons and Costco both removed them after a year 'due to high volume of theft', but our Home Depot, Walmart, and Winco have left them in. I like to use them when I am in a hurry because I dont have to stand around and listen to the slow checker discussing her personal life.

LOL, all that is, is shoplifting. The stores are stupid or turning a blind eye.

Post one person at each bank of scanners to watch when the weight alert comes on.

Fat Andy Mattress has never worked an "any wage" job in his miserable life.
As long as daddy stocks up his basement pantry with cheesy poofs, and spam, FAM is good.

Self Checkout should be banned everywhere. You are literally working for the store for FREE when you use self check out lanes.

You couldn't afford to live in my neighborhood.

Probably a study of the relatonship betwween eliminating cashier jobs in relation to the amount of shoplifting a store has to deal with to determine the optimal level of job elimination to increase profits. Then too, we could also increase the punishment for shop lifting to draconian levels, perhaps the death penalty because someone got so hungry they would steal a loaf of bread?

Oregon has become a punchline to a bad joke. They finally allow people to pump their own gas but now they don't people bagging their own groceries. Idiots.

Probably due to stupid people more than theft. Florida is the equivalent to Australia. Basically, a self-selected penal colony of stupid people and criminals. After Trump finishes the Mexico wall, he should start on the Florida wall. Once that is in place, I will be burning tires to bring on the sea level rise.

There are just some times I want a person there. Like at McD's when I do go there. I dont want to use a kiosk to order my Big Mac. That's just me. I dont use those kiosks.
