After 18 years of war, thousands of lives lost, and hundreds of billions of dollars squandered, the United States accomplished precisely nothing.

No country should expect to win all of its wars, no matter how strong it appears to be and how virtuous or well intended its aims. But at the very least, a great nation should try to learn from its missteps and do what it can to avoid them in the future. An obvious corollary: Don't take foreign policy advice from people who have been loudly and repeatedly wrong. In this respect, John Bolton's departure from the White House might be seen as a step in the right direction.

#2 | Posted by J_Tremain As one who has never set foot in these areas of conflict, yet speaks with some sort of expertise, let me clue you in to a few facts. If we were after conquest of Iraq and Afghanistan, why did we allow every adult male to possess a AK47 and a couple of full magazines? What you ignore is the vast majority of killing in both countries were internal, the ones we engaged was inconsequential compared to the bloodshed inflicted internally. Afghanistan was already in a civil war. When the Baathist government fell the Shea majority started a major vengeance campaign against the Sunni minority. In ether country the number of dead that were killed by us was in the neighborhood of 5%. The insurgents learned quickly not to engage American troops, it was suicidal. They relegated themselves to mortar and rocket attacks or IEDs.

We should never have gone in to Afghanistan. Two Nukes (with prior warning to Russia and China, Pakistan at the last minute). NO ONE has ever been able to conquer Afghanistan, ever. Islam moved into Afghanistan one village at a time. A small foothold of the "Religion" became a violent take over of the village with death to all who did not convert. It took Islam over a hundred years to move through Afghanistan into China. This place is one of the Areas where a land war is nuts. We lost the chance to win the war for Iraq, when Bush 41 stopped the war and pulled back. We had suffice troops on the ground to defeat the Iraq army and insure that the peace was won. Now, we need to get out of Iraq as well. As a quiet Trump supporter (maybe), I would be for pulling all of our troops out of the Middle East. If we are truly Energy independent then we do not need them at all. But pulling out of the middle east should come with a very grave warning. Any attack on the United States homeland will result in immediate and overwhelming force to the country that sponsored the attack. This would include unrestricted bombing, no safe places to hide. If at all possible no "Boots on the ground". This would have to be an election issue that no President from either party would ever go back on the warning, and when the time comes they would have to insure that the warning was carried out in the fullest. The rest of the Middle East would get the message loud and clear.

Killing bin laden was the perfect chance to declare victory and leave. Obama screwed that up just like he screwed up letting the bankers get away scott free.

If he had ended the war, it would probably have impressed enough anti war voters to make them vote for dems and trump would never even have been elected.

Very true.

Doubtful. The GOP "Cut & Run" rhetoric would have balanced that.

#12 | Posted by 1947steamer China seems to have experience in invading and subject other nations to their will, at least in Tibet. Seems they have a skill at slow genocide as far as it goes if the rare reports in the newest province of China are to be believed. Seems the Chinese know how to subdue a Muslim population too, if they can put 1.5 million Muslims into concentration camps in western China. I am sure they could pacify the population east to west one province and one tribe at a time.
I doubt the Russians would object. Stability with a buffer state is much better than having your biggest baddest opponent running the show down south. Even if they did, we are talking about a nation with the GNP of South Korea. ("Gold is the muscle of war" Julius Caesar) China has four times that. Additionally Russia has seen her eastern provinces taken over population wise by the Chinese. They could take it, and the Russian Republic would ether have to accept that or resort to nuclear war. It would make sense not to object to a Chinese incursion.
Would I have any heart burn if Afghanistan turned into China West? HELL NO! At this moment the Chinese have already published their plans, starting with the New Silk Road, a railway. I'll point out a couple of facts. If they can move passengers, they can move troops. If they can move freight they can move tanks.

If we'd put the same effort and force level into Afghanistan in 2001 that Bush put into Iraq in 2003, the Taliban would have been wiped out and civilians would have been safer and more trusting in our commitment.

It wasn't until Obama took office that our force level grew anywhere near that in Iraq at its peak.

By the, the Taliban had retaken much of the country and civilians were distrustful of us because we promised one thing under Bush but what they got instead was a renewed Taliban making their lives miserable again in much of the country.

You are right, but you left out one crucial part (as you usually do when you slather praise on your messiah". Bush promised withdrawal with date that ran into Obama's term. Obama initially agreed to it, but ended up extending the withdrawal.

and we all get caught up in these endless diatribes when the reality is that in 20 years or less all these arguments/suppositions will be moot.

You are correct, however; I do not believe that it will be as soon as 20 years, I look more to 50 years out. The Human race will fight the take over of AI and Robotics as long as they can (not the techies or very wealthy, business owners). In the end the thinning will happen. By then the population load will be in the neighborhood of 10 Billion, with a B. The earth can not support those numbers and those who press for a green new deal will get their hope, the reduction of world wide humans to around 1-2 Billion.

Its funny how there is always someone saying something similar to this dribble after we have our "greatest military in the whirrrrrrrtled" asses handed to us in every conflict... except Grenada... when all military casualties on the US side were "friendly fire". Over 70 years!!!! Trillions of dollars and lose lose lose.

Gotta love this "no boots on the ground" strategy... guesss the greatest have trouple in the mano a mano warfare is required. That drone programis working real well for you eh... killing more civilivan than the "enemy" you are protecting them from.

15 years ago in this very forum the clown brigade was railing and gnashing their teeth over cut and run be fore it done.

Two or three days ago, the usual suspects were lamenting the "disaster" that was allowing the Taleban to meet at Camp David to end this war.

They were more concerned about damaging the reputations of previous American warmonger presidents by sullying the symbolism of meeting at Camp David than the reputation damage associated with an eighteen year war.

So wake me up when there's even a threat of a military spending bill not getting funded, because democrats are always more concerned about what names republicans are going to call them than doing the right thing.

If Reps were able to do what they want to do, there is no war we would have ever "lost". Make no mistake, it's not the Reps losing wars, it's the Dems constantly diminishing our abilities in war to the point of crippling our military. Not to say that's a bad thing because we've all seen how out of control any military can get when left unchecked, but Dems truly need to start adding "because Dems are preventing them from doing what it takes to win a war" after every headline like this. Being the cause of why someone can't do something and then gloating about that person not doing it is just absurdly stupid.

You're right. We'd win every conflict if we could just nuke everyone or murder countless innocent people. Too bad democrat's annoying ethics prevents that. What a buzzkill for the sociopaths in the republican party.
