The little-known back story of the hotel where Republican's gathered in Baltimore last week is how it embodies all the unjust policies that have created record wealth inequality in the US

Trump and his Republican lackeys partied at the Baltimore Marriott Hotel worth $115 million -- and this same hotel will pay no taxes for 25 years while the workers at that same hotel are treated like total crap with garbage wages and no benefits.

And people wonder why working Americans are so pissed off.

This is what America's second Gilded Age looks like.

It's what the rich do, especially the president, regardless who he is.

I'm kind of surprised you are so unaware of this sort of behavior. Or are you saying past presidents have stayed in hotels where workers *aren't* treated like total crap with garbage wages and no benefits? If so, which president was that?

How about you provide a citation to back up your assertion.

The video at the top of this thread provides plenty of sources, plenty of facts, and plenty of evidence, that backs up what I'm saying.

Or, you can spending all of 5 minutes doing a search on "wealth inequality" while applying some adult oriented critical thinking skills.

I will after you provide the citation to back up your point, "and this same hotel will pay no taxes for 25 years". I asked first.

"Or, you can spending all of 5 minutes doing a search on "wealth inequality" while applying some adult oriented critical thinking skills."

This has nothing at all to do with your baseless claim. Besides, you made the claim. Therefore you bear the burden of proof.

Why don't you just admit you were pulling that out of your ass because no one can see 25 years into the future and determine what kind of taxes that hotel will be paying. So either provide a citation to back up that outrageous claim, or admit you made it up.

Literally the first Google hit, my oh my!

baltimorebrew.com
"It rebated fully 100% of Paterakis' property tax, requiring his company, H&S Properties, to pay just $1 a year in real estate taxes for the next 25 years. The abatement included both the hotel and a 620-space parking garage. (Retail property was excluded from the PILOT abatement. It results in about $40,000-$50,000 in property taxes paid annually to the city.)"

Nice try, but it doesn't say they won't be paying hotel guest occupancy tax, which if you've ever stayed at a hotel you would know it's quite large and often doubles or more the alread existing sales tax.

Yes, it has been. You're welcome. And I'm glad you appreciate my English lesson to you.

To expound, if someone wants to convey the concept of no property taxes, the proper term is "no property taxes", not "no taxes" unless of course the subject in question pays only one tax. Hotels, however, pay taxes other than property tax, so clarification is necessary. To say they pay no tax means just that.

Thus ends your English lesson unless it is obvious you still don't understand and need another one. But even you should understand this simple concept.

Again, you are quite welcome!

The Marriott Waterfront Hotel where this event was held has 700 rooms and a book rate of $350 a night.

Baltimore has a hotel tax of 9.5%. The tax abatement loss for this hotel at, say, $229 a night per room is $5,482,260 a year.

What a deal! Did Trump write a check for Baltimore's missing $5.5 million? Or did he take back the disparaging remarks he made about the city who could have used that cash to fix road, fund schools, hire more police, etc etc?

State sales tax and local hotel taxes are separate items on itemized receipts for any hotel I've ever stayed in. You do realize that under the PILOT program for redevelopment of the Inner Harbor, former Mayor Kurt Schmoke (D) in 1997 gave Marriott the deal of the Century, 100% property tax forgiveness until 2022, so that Marriott would build this hotel as the anchor of the Inner Harbor, and that the reason given was that the City and County occupancy and sales taxes (that the Marriott would still have to pay) would more than make up the lost property tax...right?

The tax abatement loss for this hotel at, say, $229 a night per room is $5,482,260 a year. ~ AU

There is no abatement for the hotel occupancy tax. The largest tax revenue stream from the Marriott currently comes from the city's occupancy tax on hotel guests. It generated nearly $21 million in tax revenues between 2002 and 2009.

The city also has a profit-sharing plan with Paterakis. The city receives $594,000 and 10% of the net cash flow after all expenses and debt service.

All the nation's --------- tax money goes to these schemes where rich people get obscenely richer,

People wouldn't have jobs and tax revenue if the city didn't offer tax schemes like this. Besides it only is in effect for 25 years, after which the Marriot must pay full fare.

The big issue is getting conventions to come to Baltimore to generate more revenues for the city.

He got a property tax rebate of $3,349,967 in 2009. In addition, he (Paterakis) owns several other properties for which he also got sweetheart tax deals. He also got off of paying profit sharing to the City of Baltimore on the Marriot Waterway property, a loss of an additional $1.5 million a year. He's avoided tens of millions in taxes so far.

Someone likes to argue just to argue. Maybe he'll read an article about it and learn something new:

"People wouldn't have jobs and tax revenue if the city didn't offer tax schemes like this."

Exactly. My hometown of Plano, Texas offered huge tax breaks to lure in big companies like EDS, Frito/Lay, JC Penney, and others. If they didn't get a net gain from it from employmees and their taxes, trickle down to restaurants and shops in the area, and such, they wouldn't offer these tax breaks. Duh. And as Mackris pointed out, the Marriot in Baltimore did the same. It was a net gain for the city and its people. I doubt seriously if Trump figured into their math at all.

TDS sure messes up a person's logic and thinking capabilities

In Western Europe, home of 'democratic socialism,' everyone gets a pension large enough to live on, universal access to health care, and in most countries, free tuition to state colleges and universities, as well as several weeks of vacation a year. And they consistently poll as the happiest populations on Earth.

And if they were financially stressed by the taxes they pay for all of that, why are they the ones vacationing by the millions all over the world every year instead of Americans, the majority whom are living paycheck to paycheck?

Western Europe figured out long ago that higher taxes + a system to put them to good use benefits everyone and society at large.

I just logged off to see what 'troll' GOATMAN was talking about.

Turns out it's HIM!!! LMAO. Yep. Instead of commenting on the thread topic, he went after an individual poster's comment, as usual.

"and this same hotel will pay no taxes for 25 years"

I did watch the video. I even said so in this thread. I also said I saw nothing to support pincheloaf's claim.

But you don't care about the truth. You will side with pincheloaf's lie sincce he is a fellow democrat and ignore the fact I saw the video and no proof of his claim. That's what unbridled GDS is doing to you americanunity.

NOthing wrong with taking sides except when you ignore the side of truth and side with the lie for no other than partisan reasons. That's just plain sickness of the mind.

Asking for citation to an outrageous claim (which pinchaloaf never could provide, by the way -- it just compelled him to write bad poetry about me and stalk me) is commenting on the topic. On what planet would this not be the case?

You know, americanunity, when you put party over truth as you constantly do, it is time to step back and have a good, hard look at yourself and remove yourself from places like this. Though I am not a psychologist, I would guess putting party over truth is a sign of some sort of emotional malady. It just can't be healthy.

I'll be logged in after this comment and won't see your response, but I'll respond to some things you've said. BTW, since you know I have you plonked, if responding to my comments knowing I won't see them gives you comfort - have at it. You may even get newsworthy flags from right wing idiots.

A. I do not have "GDS." You're boring. Plonked so I don't have to observe your troll act or scroll past countless posts on any given thread you've chosen to pound your chest on.

B. I've only plonked you twice. The first, after which I gave it a second chance, then the second (and current) time one night when half the Comments page was you arguing and nitpicking schitt half to death.

C. I'm hyperpartisan? Yep, I'm a Democrat. Freely admitted. You, on the other hand are a political coward. When was the last time you called out Trump for any one of the outrageous things he's said or done? Any of his supporters here? Brother, observe the log in your own eye before casting aspersions on the sliver in mine.

You're an intelligent person. It's such a shame you waste it on arguing and nitpicking.

I can't believe this is still going on...
The only tax that the hotel is responsible for paying is the property tax. They have been relieved of that responsibility so they do not pay taxes.
The occupancy tax is paid by the occupants ie the hotel guests. The hotel does not pay this tax hence they do not pay taxes.

#83 | Posted by TFDNihilist at 2019-09-16 11:15 AM | Reply

And as far as I can recall, businesses were very profitable before they started getting tax breaks. I imagine they could come up with a business plan to be profitable without them.

According to this logic, all taxes are paid by customers .... so no corporations pay taxes; at all?

Depends upon where the businesses were, and I haven't seen a case where redevelopment districts didn't offer some incentives to build downtown ....

I imagine they could come up with a business plan to be profitable without them.

ASAIK the Marriott hasn't turned a profit ... the point is to bring in conventions to make it and the city some revenue, this isn't happening.

#85 | POSTED BY ANDREAMACKRIS

Not true. Some taxes are direct, like the occupancy tax, which is itemized on your bill and directly paid by the guest.
The property taxes are paid by the hotel, then they decide if the guests will be charged a higher or lower rent depending on how much profit the hotel wants to make.
My guess is the hotel pockets that one completely.

The Marriott is a symbol of wealth inequality and unjust policies?

Where does that leave Hilton?

And friends, just so you know, a free society will ALWAYS be unequal. The only way to impose "equality" is to limit the individual freedom that produces inequality.

"They say wealth inequity like it's a bad thing."

A LOT of people don't get that. It makes me wonder if some might prefer to live in places where wealth is more equally distributed. Like Afghanistan. Or Iraq. Or Yemen.

Poverty is one thing. But income inequality in the west boils down to one rich person being upset because someone else is richer. But I think that your average Kenyan would happily swap places with your average American (who earns 3900% the average Kenyan income), despite the fact that income inequality is less in Kenya.

#104 | Posted by madbomber at 2019-09-17 03:27 PM | Reply

Oh, and by "Kenya" I meant Ethiopia. And the average American earns 8000% of what the Average Ethiopian earns.

I'd settle for Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Canada, Japan, Belgium, Italy, Croatia, Netherlands, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, Iceland, Germany, Finland, ...all of which have more equal income and wealth distribution than the Jnited States.

Or were you just going to pretend it's only undesirable places that have this?

"I'd settle for Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Canada, Japan, Belgium, Italy, Croatia, Netherlands, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, Iceland, Germany, Finland, ...all of which have more equal income and wealth distribution than the United States."

Hmm.

I think most of those would look at you only slightly more favorably than a Syria immigrant trying to move in...but don't let me deter you from trying.

I love living in Germany. Hiking, biking...if you like outdoors stuff, it's better than anywhere I've seen. And I grew up in the Pacific Northwest.

But income inequality...it's as transparent to me here as it was in the US. But the average income in Germany is only 76% average US income. And they have higher taxes. Much higher.

If you're looking at it economically, the US is far, far better than Germany. On average you make more, and the money you make will go further. Despite the fact that Germany has a lower Gini coefficient.

#107 | Posted by madbomber at 2019-09-18 03:51 AM | Reply

But you're helping me make my point Joe...that income inequality really isn't that important. If it were, those who disapprove of it would be attracted to those countries where it was lower. Many of those countries are in Europe. Many are not. And I don't really see you pointing to Ethiopia as a model of things done correctly.
