The idea was conceived by one of the organisers, Yatin Sangoi, who one day broke wind while watching a movie with his family.

"About 25 days back I was watching a movie with my family when I farted loudly and everyone laughed. That's when I thought if there's a competition, I could be a winner. However, there are none in India," he said adding that after a thorough discussion with his family and friends he decided to organise the event.

"30 years back, people used to fart freely. However, now it's something of inhibition and is frowned upon by society," he added.

He said that there was no specific aim behind the competition and just wants to provide a platform to those who want to break wind freely.

Surely they will do this when the wind is blowing west to improve the smell of neighboring lands.

All that for a prize of $2 to $3?

$3 (US) goes a long way in Pakistan. I am told it goes twice as long in India and lasts even more in Bangladesh and Nepal.

For example, you can get an excellent mobile phone for 15,000 Rupees.
