Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, September 18, 2019

For a taster of what's potentially to come, let's cross the Pond to America, where talk-show host Bill Maher had this to say: "In August, 53 Americans died from mass shootings. Terrible, right? Do you know how many died from obesity? Forty-thousand."

A shocking statistic indeed and it's indisputable that it should be highlighted and widely debated.

But he then said this: "Fat shaming doesn't need to end. It needs to make a comeback. Some amount of shame is good.

"We shamed people out of smoking and into wearing seat belts... shame is the first step in reform."

Meaning that, fuelled by Brit James Corden's robust response on his chat show, Maher's call to "fat-shame" became the debate and smothered the real issue of how supposedly developed nations can tackle this spiralling health crisis.

1st world problems. People aren't going hungry in America; they're eating themselves to death.

No one said either wasn't' bad.

But since approximately 8,000 times more people die from obesity than guns, we should put 8,000 times the effort in fighting it.

I haven't heard a single presidential candidate make fighting obesity a part of his/her campaign platform. Yet they all have grandiose solutions to keep people from getting shot.

If they are so concerned about people's lives, why are they not making promises on fighting obesity?

#8 | Posted by goatman at 2019-09-18 12:18 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

The ones who died from obesity chose the lifestyle they were living.

Did those who were killed in mass shootings choose to die in such a manner?

Haven't you been paying attention?...they are victims of a capitalistic and greedy healthcare system.

Well Goatman, obesity is self-inflicted.

To even compare the two is ridiculous.

I haven't heard a single presidential candidate make fighting obesity a part of his/her campaign platform.

What could you possibly recommend? Without stomping on their rights?

it doesn't mobilize people. Presidential candidates already know 2 facts....

1. we are fat
2. we don't care

we would get real, meaningful healthcare reform if folks starting valuing their health more.

Not all. A lot of them are victims of emotional issues and mental illnesss. I thought libs were sympathetic to this sort of thing?

"Recent studies have shown that many cases of obesity are the result of such mental illnesses as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), binge eating disorder, and night eating syndrome. "

since approximately 8,000 times more people die from obesity than guns, we should put 8,000 times the effort in fighting it.

In many cases obesity is self-inflicted which makes it different from someone buying something that could be banned and using it to spray hot metal into your body and kill you violently and instantly.

But i agree, and i think if we're going to put an 8000x effort into fightinf obesity, the fight starts with universal healthcare including preventative care, nutrition education and free healthy meals all day long for students in our schools.

Glad to see you on board!

Did anyone pick up in the story this is Bill Maher's headline and that his solution is fat shaming? He said that we got people to use seat belts and stop smoking by shaming them and he thinks fat shaming should make a comeback as a solution to the obesity problem.

Your first statement is a lie.
The kids who died from obesity last month didn't choose their lifestyle.
Some of the 53 people who died to mass shootings did choose to maintain the lifestyle that got them killed - gangbangers gonna -------- and the shooters who were killed by themselves or law-enforcement are included in that total.

"the fight starts with universal healthcare including preventative care, nutrition education and free healthy meals all day long for students in our schools."

Really, the fight would start by heavily regulating what people were allowed to eat, thus preventing them from getting fat. Because, just like guns, people clearly can't be trusted with food.

Actually I did mention them. They were the rest of the 53. Hence my use of the term 'some' in Some of the 53 people who died to mass shootings did choose to maintain the lifestyle that got them killed
You're really not very good at this.

If we can figure out a way to get mass killers to kill obese people, we could score 40,023.

Just a suggestion.

Rein should change 'they' (I'm getting the hang of this non-gender thing) screen name to:

It would be "their".

Rein should change "their" screen name to.

You need the pronoun to be possessive.

But hey, points for the effort.

My problem with that wasn't that she was addressing it, but rather that it was misguided. Reduce fat and meat, so end up feeding kids high carb, low protein meals. Not the strongest method for reducing obesity.

And no one is freaking out over obesity. Rather pointing out the problem that it is orders of a magnitude more deadly on the whole, and yet Dems ignore it - or sometimes even praise it - while chasing after the more sensational issue.

I still hold that gun control is anti-liberal. My favorite quote - "Let's talk about gun control. Banning or restricting firearms is the most white privileged idea ever. Rich liberals scoffing at the notion that a person might need to defend their own life is a tower so ivory you can't look at it in direct sunlight. It's the personal safety equivalent of saying just have the maid do it.'"

Not to mention the cognitive dissonance that we have lefties who believe we have concentration camps going, pervasive rape culture, and fascists walking our streets, yet want to make sure no one can defend themselves from them.

#36 | Posted by zeropointnrg at 2019-09-19 07:09 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

Reduce fat and meat, so end up feeding kids high carb, low protein meals.

Low meat doesn't have to mean low protein. Broccoli, nuts, beans, eggs, all are pretty high in protein.

Also low fat doesn't have to mean no meat, skinless chicken breast or extra lean ground beef both super low in fat.

The secret to skinny isn't much of a secret, low sugar no sugar substitutes, consume the same or fewer calories as you burn. Why we try and make it so complex is beyond me. I guess we like sitting on our asses pouring sugar down our throats too much so we want an answer that allows us to keep doing that.
