Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said the company has placed an order for 100,000 electric delivery vans from Michigan-based startup Rivian. The announcement came during an event on Thursday in Washington, DC where Bezos unveiled Amazon's sweeping plan to tackle climate change. Bezos said he expects 100,000 Rivian vans to be on the road by 2024, according to USA Today reporter Nathan Bomey. The first vans will hit the road in 2021.

Wow. What a major boost for the start-up.

I predict another rise in Amazon Prime's annual fee.

Then go to Sears! Rather than have your stuff delivered in a day or two.

Someone has to pay for this virtue-signaling. It sure in the hell isn't going to be Bezos.

#2 Probably but that was coming either way.

#3 Or just not pay for prime a lot of stuff is free shipping anyway. Or you know other sites.

#4 Without looking at the numbers I suspect this is a fraction of their fleet and a 4 year rollout meh 25k a year. I'm betting it's more an experiment to see if the gas and maintenance savings add up. Might as well get some free publicity out of it.

100K is more than an experiment. The internal infrastructure to handle the number of vans is significant enough to know this isn't an experiment. it might not work out, but its not a "trial".

I get more with Prime than free delivery. I'm not a fan of Bezos, but I admit free one day delievery (sometimes same day. I've had that happen twice to my surprise). I get movies and music as well. Also since I take a lot of pictures, I like their unlimited photo storage. And yes, that is full definition, not a watered down1/10 the size jpeg.

I've done the math and with all bennies it's cheaper than signing up with Nextflix, a music app, unlimited photo cloud. I also like and the next day, sometimes same day delievery package. At least for me. And again, I hate to admit it because I'm not a huge bezos fan, but I put my budget over dislike of oligarchs.

But that is always subject to change. I'll see how much Prime goes up.

It'll definitely be cheaper. EVs require far less maintenance. Tires and brakes. Battery replacement only required after tens of thousands of miles. That's about it. No gas, no oil, no tuneups, no emissions, quick pickup.

I bought my first electric replacement for a gas powered machine this spring; an EGO brand 21" self propelled electric lawnmower. Love it! The battery is good for an hour of cutting. So quiet too. I liked the electric mower so much I bought their electric chain saw. It came with an extra battery (both are 7.5ah, 56v) & charger. It's powerful. And pretty quiet too. The only sound is the whirring of the chain. Both batteries work in either the lawnmower or chainsaw. No gas, no oil, no weatherizing for winter. Nada. Our next car will be an EV. I'm sold on electric machines.

This may be slightly off-topic, but that never stopped a DR-DNC hack.

I thought this guy was one of the few sane ones because of his support of nuclear power.

"Yang: Climate Change May Require Elimination of Car Ownership
Imagines 'constant roving fleet of electric cars' as alternative

Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang said the United States may have to eliminate private car ownership to combat climate change during MSNBC's climate forum at Georgetown University Thursday morning."

Uh, no. Next.

Bezos is a brilliant business man. This will likely save him money.

I'll wait for the battery fires and the hydrogen explosions. There is no course of action without risk.

Completely untrue. Most of what you posted is wrong or lacking context. The TCO doesn't work out.

Sweet, now Bezos can write off even more in gas and travel expenses, ensuring Amazon pays no taxes or very little.

Amazon owns Rivian. It's a joint venture with Ford. Bezos went in $700 million. Ford went in $500 million. Cox Automotive has come on this month with $350 million more, shortly before the 100,000 van deal was announced.

Nulli doesn't realize he won't qualify for Yang's $1000 per month.
