Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, September 21, 2019

For the first time since the Affordable Care Act went into effect in 2010, the number of Americans without health insurance has gone up -- and once again Texas leads the nation. Isn't it time that changed? The Census Bureau says 27.5 million Americans (8.5 percent of the U.S. population) didn't have health insurance in 2018, compared with 25.6 million (7.9 percent) in 2017. In Texas alone, more than 5 million (17.7 percent) were uninsured last year, compared with 4.8 million (17.3 percent) in 2017. Having an uninsured rate that's more than double the nation's is embarrassing but it hasn't stirred the state's elected leaders to action.

Eligibility overview: Texas has Medicaid options for residents who are pregnant, a parent/caretaker, transitioning foster care youth, blind, disabled or older than 65. It did not expand Medicaid to cover all low-income adults.

Income requirements: Pregnant women must have a monthly income between $1,990 (for a family of one) and $4,749 (for a family of five) " add $690 for each additional person. Monthly income for a parent/caretaker must below $103 (for a family of one) and $310 (for a family of five). If there are two parents or relative caretakers, the monthly income limit is between $161 (for a family of two) and $332 (for a family of five). In either scenario, add $52 for each additional person beyond five. Medicaid for those ages 18 to 25 and who were in foster care in Texas on their 18th birthday must have a monthly income up to $4,151 (for a family of one) and $9,906 (for a family of five) " add $1,439 for each person beyond that.

A single adult Texan is not eligible for Medicaid in most circumstances

What a disaster.

Does the article say if the age of uninsured population is taken into account? It's well known that younger people, especially ones not attached to a full-time corporate job, or so called "invincible" prefer not to spend money on insurance.

Texas also had influx of population, particularly younger, migrating from other states due to work / job / gig opportunities, and newly-arrived may not be eligible for state / gov't insurance for a year or so, until they have "established" residence.

This could artificially increase the number / percentage of uninsured, temporarily or semi-permanently - these numbers are often in flux in some dynamic states.

They leave that up to you. You said San ANtonio is horrible. I presume it's because you don't like brown people. Fox has no problem with brown people. Maybe thats why they aren't reporting.

I don't see that on this page. Can you cite your source? It would be sexual discrimination to give it to single women but not single men.

medicaid is block granted to and administered by the states. You need to look at the state website to find the rules

Thanks for the links. When I get time, I'll peruse them. I don't understand how they can get away with sex discrinination, but perhaps that will become clear when I read the links.

In the meantime, glad I have VA since I am widowed.

there is no sex discimination. A person caring for a child is eligible, a non disabled single person with no dependants is not.

I don't suppose those numbers have anything to do with demographics...

62% of uninsured in Texas are hispanic

59% of all hispanics in Texas are uninsured

Non-citizens are 3x more likely to be uninsured in Texas. 63% went without insurance

In Texas 38% of all uninsured are non-citizens

- source, Texas Medical Association

The TMA notes that hispanics in Texas are overrepresented in jobs that do not often offer insurance due to their seasonal nature, which contributes to the higher percentages

Why is that relevant? Insurance premiums are a lot cheaper than absorbing unpaid ER visits. Do you want to pay for a throat culture and a Z-PAC or do you want to pay for hospitalization due to pneumonia and a dozen sick co-workers too?

medicaid saves all of us money.

Do illegals get insurance?

They are counted in the census, so if they cant get insurance and are counted, then they skew the numbers everywhere they are.

Nope just an observation. You entered the thread about trump hiring a record number of lobbyists, but since you can't defend it, you leave. Because god knows you can't say anything bad about trump. But right..you're not a republican...
