Vice President Mike Pence arrived at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in an eight-vehicle motorcade Saturday, prompting cries of "sacrilege" on social media.

Michigan governors and former presidents Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Gerald Ford, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton have all visited Mackinac Island " and none needed a motorcade. Ford, the only sitting president to visit, traveled by carriage. The Secret Service reportedly sneaked a car onto the island for his visit but kept it hidden and never used it.

Critics on Twitter berated Pence for his arrogance, insensitivity, and disdain for local tradition and the environment. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) was hardly surprised. Detroit native and former Associated Press journalist Ron Fournier called the motorcade "obscene." Former Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteren was taken aback.

Just another day under the stupendous leadership of Most Revered Galactic Emperor/Universal Grand Poobah Trump and his sub-emperor Pence.

Did anyone else notice the police accompanying the motorcade were all on bicycles?

At least that's better than being you all the time.

Pence could have traveled in upfitted golf cart-type vehicles (like the fortified Popemobile) instead of behemoth SUVs since no one else on the little island has motorized vehicles.

And just how is your sniper going to escape the island Boaz? Outrun the Secret Service and local LEO? To where?

Evade the air and water protection in place during Pence's visit?

And you call other people stupid, smh.

LMAO but Michigan is vital - as were Wisconsin and other rust belt states. He took it in 2016 and it is normally a Democrat state. He promised more manufacturing jobs, lower taxes, blah blah blah.

Mackinac Island is small. Circumference is under 8 miles. The distance from the Airport to the Grand Hotel is 1.3 miles. It's about like driving around a golf course in a cart for 18... So a golf cart procession would have been just fine. It's not like Pence is the President either. This time of year the tourists are mostly gone or it would have been a zoo mixed with a circus - instead it was just the circus.

Just to see if I have this right. The island allows exceptions for emergency vehicles. The secret service brought 8 emergency vehicles over to the island. The vehicles are part of the security protection provided by policies and laws of the country.

But because they didn't ignore those policies and laws and used the afforded exception for emergency vehicles, everyone should freak out?

#29 | Posted by ABH at 2019-09-23 01:49 PM | Reply

One of the times I met Cheney was during a trip he made to San Antonio Air Force 2 was preceded by cargo planes that unloaded several vehicles (I didn't count how many, but I know it was at least 5) just to get him from the airport to downtown. It's the way presidents and vice presidents travel.

Funny note on this: I went aboard AF2, yet I did not have to go through any metal detectors at the airport. An SS agent had my name on a clipboard and didn't even ask to see ID when I told him who I was. This kind of shocked me.

I'm sure if Pence had arrived in a helicopter (not a very secure way to travel) the left would be birching about all the noise and leaves blown about, etc. It's as Nulli said, nothing is to petty for the left to whine about.

I worked in downtown Dallas during the '84 Republican Convention. We were inconvenienced for a few days as streets were closed, building entrances blocked by secret service, entire restaurants closed, etc.

But we survived those four days and I didn't hear near the whining I hear about the Pence/Mackinaw thing. Sure there was low level grumbling, but nothing like the snowflakes on Mackinaw over a few hour visit.

You really want the VP, who had on his staff a military aide who carries "the football" everywhere in case of emergency, to not have protection is hilarious.

You are the one trying to say that the visit by Pence somehow required more security than anyone else who ever visited. The secret service has escorted several visitors including people who were much more likely to be targeted by your mytsery assassin than Pence and they never required a motorcade. Pence ignored the law because he and his boss don't believe laws apply to them.

I used to live on the island. 5 presidents visited with full secret service protection without the need of the full motorcade. There would be an appropriate vehicle brought to the island and kept out of sight but no parade of cars like this. Islanders generally would take this as a straight up middle finger to their home and their tradition by a guest. No one has pulled this stunt before and I find it offensive even if the Sheplers, who run the biggest ferry company, are making apologies for carrying the cars over.

Every governor goes up there every summer to the governor's residence on the island...and the get there from the island airport or the docks by a special horse drawn carriage. In fact it might have been good PR for Pence to take a carriage ... the route from the airpot to the Grand Hotel would have been fairly easy to secure actually.

Well, looks like Trump/pence lost a few voters. So why all the whining and no rejoicing from the left?

BTW, only one sitting president has been there. And it was Ford who was well liked since Michigan was his home state.

So let's see some happy faces, Trump haters! Y'all owe Mr. Pence one!

Only one way off the small island. Pence's security detail didn't think this one through. At all.

Comes off as pompous and uncaring. Which it was.

I looked all over the internet and I can't see where they are prohibited today. In fact I have found several references that said they are allowed in certain instances.

But this can easily be settled. Were the eight vehicles issued a citation?

"Motorized vehicles have been prohibited on the island since 1898, with the exception of snowmobiles during winter, emergency vehicles, and service vehicles. "

Legal definition of service vehicle:

Pence's vehicles were providing a service: Security detail for the VP.

Funny how the folks in the video at top don't seem too put out. And I looked at the news the next day and apparently things are back to exactly as they were the day before Pence got there.

Tempest in a teapot.

The island does have a few emergency vehicles but I don't remember an instance when they were used.

For anyone who has never been on the island I highly recommend it. It is really, really cool as DCinMA can attest firsthand. I'm guessing AU can as well given his ties to Michigan.

I would guess the people and tourists were far more put out from the commandeering of the hotel which almost surely happen. Whenever high ranking officials and their entourage stay at a hotel, depending on the size, it is not uncommon for the entire hotel or three floors (above and below) to be booked for that official for security reasons.

I worked in a 39 story building in downtown Dallas during the Republican Convention in 1984. (Bryan Towers) I often climbed up and down the fire escape for exercise at lunch. One day during the convention I came face to face with a secret service agent in the fire escape who scrutinized me and questioned what I was doing there. He told me to go back up the stairs. Why? Reagan's motorcade was due to come down the street the building was one.

The question for me is: What was required by the Secret Service?

My guess is this is SOP and was required by Pence's security detail.

How much did this cost the taxpayers? They had to hire a special ferry to get the eight vehicles over to the island since the normal ferries only carry passengers. I've been on Mackinac Island many times (I used to live in Michigan). The distance from the airport to the Grand Hotel in not that great of a distance. After all, it only takes a couple of hours to peddle a bicycle around the entire island.

I'm 48 years old and have lived in Michigan my entire life. I've been to Mackinac Island several times. The last time I was there was roughly 12 years ago, so it's been a while.

But they still had to spend significant taxpayer's dollars to hire a ship/ferry capable of transporting at least eight vehicles to and from the island, all for a pair of 10-minute motorcades between the airfield and the Grand Hotel (note that the airfield is less than a two mile carriage ride from the hotel). That being said, if it's true, as has been reported, that the Vice-President arrived on the island by helicopter, there were several other suitable place where it could have landed that would have been much closer to the hotel. In fact, one location was literally in front of the Grand Hotel itself, just a short walk from the hotel's world famous veranda:

Back in Aug. 2014, former President Barack Obama wore a tan suit during a press conference at the White House where he spoke about combating ISIS in Syria.

The suit, however, prompted a great deal of backlash from people who claimed it represented a "lack of seriousness" and resembled an outfit he would wear to a Hamptons party " despite the fact that numerous past presidents, including Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, have sported the outfit in the same hue.

Hmmm

BTW, the president has to be on it, or it isn't Marine One. Marine Two carries the VP.

As if an eight SUV motorcade speeding down tree-shaded lanes normally used by bicycles and carriages wasn't going to disturb the tranquility of the island, eh?

And besides, he had already arrived by helicopter, so that point was moot.
