Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, September 25, 2019

Trump: "The other thing, There's a lot of talk about Biden's son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great. Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you can look into it ... It sounds horrible to me."

All the while ....

It got almost no attention, but in May, CNN reported that Sens. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., Richard Durbin, D-Ill., and Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., wrote a letter to Ukraine's prosecutor general, Yuriy Lutsenko, expressing concern at the closing of four investigations they said were critical to the Mueller probe. In the letter, they implied that their support for U.S. assistance to Ukraine was at stake. Describing themselves as "strong advocates for a robust and close relationship with Ukraine," the Democratic senators declared, "We have supported [the] capacity-building process and are disappointed that some in Kyiv appear to have cast aside these [democratic] principles to avoid the ire of President Trump," before demanding Lutsenko "reverse course and halt any efforts to impede cooperation with this important investigation."

Kellyanne Conway, Jared Kushner and Rudy Giuliani are in the Stateroom of the RMS Trump looking at an giant, unrolled blueprint of the ship. Kushner pulls a red pencil with the word "Ukraine" on it and draws a 10 inch line through the front six watertight compartments of the bow. The three stare at each other in horror.

"But Trump can't sink!!" Giuliani blurts out in despair.

The ghost of Richard Nixon suddenly appears before them. "The damage is too great." the apparition solemnly proclaims. "He has an iron will, similar to my own, but that iron will drag him down-- I assure you, he can sink. And he will."

Nope. In fact, the irony here is that the corrupt prosecutor Biden and other heads of state were wanting to force out wasn't investigating the company--Burisma--Biden's son worked for:

Local anti-corruption activists had become convinced Shokin was quashing investigations into Burisma's owner, Mykola Zlochevsky, and other oligarchs, said Daria Kaleniuk, the director of the Anti-Corruption Action Center, a Ukrainian transparency group.

"Shokin was not dismissed because he wanted to investigate Burisma," Kaleniuk said. "Quite the contrary. He was dismissed because of a lack of willingness to investigate this particular case as well as other important cases involving high-level associates of [ousted former President Viktor] Yanukovych."

Well he clearly pressured Zelensky to investigate Biden. It's right in the transcript.

While there's nothing in the transcript that says "do this and we'll give you your $400MM in military aid," the fact that he withheld the aid a week before the call creates a fairly strong inference that he was trying to use that to apply pressure.

Taking the aid out of the equation entirely, it's still incredibly dirty to ask a foreign government to investigate the son of your political rival. But Trump has lowered the bar so significantly that i doubt most people will care.

I like how the GOP talking points were quick out of the box today from Cult45, I can tell the GOP is in survival mode. It won't work. Trump does express concern that a previous administration acted improperly and asked President Zelenskyy to work with the DoJ to look into the matter.
Seems like the actions of the executive branch determining if laws were broken, to me.

Obviously no quid pro quo.
No mention of a delay of military funds as either a carrot or a stick.

You are aware that the Steele memos were merely one part of the Republican oppo research that was abandoned by Republicans and later picked up by Hillary's campaign, don't you?

So, yes, sort of like that, except that ZERO of the points in that memo have been disproven and several have been confirmed...and your basic understanding of the timeline is also completely wrong. The Steele memos did not "start a 2+ year investigation." That investigation was already underway.

By the way, Whitewater went on for almost 7 years.

OK, you're clearly clueless. The DA found no corruption and was the subject of corruption himself. He was found to be protecting Oligarchs. He should have been fired. In fact, he found no corruption with the company Biden's son was involved with, and after concluding that the Obama Admin continued to push for his removal.

I am trying to look at this like a prosecutor would, and a few things stand out:

1) He did ask for a favor in looking into the termination of the investigation of Biden's son, which is a bad fact for Trump;

2) The incoming President agreed with him that the termination of the investigation was improper and the prosecutor was treated poorly by the outgoing administration, which isn't a great fact for Biden;

3) There is nothing said by either side about withholding aid, Trump talks about how good the US has been to the Ukraine and how the EU is all talk but little results.

Let's see what the Whistleblower complaint says, but if media reports are accurate that the whistleblower didn't hear the actual conversation, then I agree that the recordings of the actual conversation will be important to dispel any doubt of that accuracy of this "transcript."

I read Barr's summary and waited to make a decision until the Report was released.

I will do the same thing here, but having some understanding of how the WH works, these "transcripts" are what is generated in the West Wing for every State/Situation Room call (especially for foreign leaders) since the translated transcripts are usually fairly cumbersome.

Having perused CNN/MSNBC/WashPo this morning, I find it interesting that since the transcript isn't as probative as the DNC and its media handmaidens hoped it would be, they are all now screaming for release of the tapes (as is the DR Left).

Like Danni unwittingly pointed out, this is akin to the Barr summary letter and my guess is that the release of the actual tapes, if that happens, will have the same effect that the Mueller Report had on the failed Russian Collusion Narrative.

Stick with Obstruction, you have more than enough to impeach on that alone.

To me it means that Trump asked Zelenskyy to share whatever info they had on Biden, Biden's son, and stopping prosecution with the AG.

A basic tenet of Prosecution is to go with the charges you know you can get a conviction with, unlike in a Civil proceeding where many lawyers throw everything against a wall and see what sticks with a jury. Any trial in the Senate will be conducted by Chief Justice Roberts, who has a long standing reputation on the Bench of not putting up with marginal claims.

Steele was not hired by Fusion GPS until after the Republicans had abandoned Fusion GPS.
" In April 2016, an attorney for Hillary Clinton's campaign and the DNC separately hired Fusion GPS to investigate Trump, while The Free Beacon stopped its backing in May of 2016. In June 2016, Fusion GPS subcontracted Steele's firm to compile the dossier."

While that may be true, it doesn't exist in the transcript that has been released thus far.
The transcript links Mr. Giuliani with seeking information about HRC and her actions in the Ukraine. HRC is not Trump's political opponent.
The transcript links AG Barr (DOJ) with seeking information on Biden's son, Biden, and the stopped prosecution. The DOJ actively working to determine if the last administration broke laws is not 'digging up dirt on a political opponent'.

ODNI general counsel Jason Klitenic " who is responsible for overseeing all legal matters within the ODNI " responded on September 13 in a letter to Schiff and the Senate Intelligence Committee. In that letter, Klitenic said that his office had consulted with the Justice Department about what to do, and that they determined the complaint wasn't an "urgent concern" after all. He further said that the complaint "does not allege misconduct within the Intelligence Community." (We now know this is because it alleged misconduct by President Trump himself.)

Nope. This isn't a QUID PRO QUO investigation, it is an impeachment inquiry. You can be impeached for ABUSE OF POWER, which is what this is, even without QUID PRO QUO.

The repub strategy has already become clear. Make NO QUID PRO QUO the new NO COLLUSION. Setting up that if dems can't prove QUID PRO QUO then that means trump didn't do anything wrong.

Sad to see you already taking your marching orders from trump's cult of liars.

Interesting, given this announcement also came out this morning:

After the Department of Justice released the call transcript between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky Wednesday morning, officials also reconfirmed U.S. Attorney John Durham is looking into Ukraine's role and potential interference in the 2016 presidential election.

"A Department of Justice team led by U.S. Attorney John Durham is separately exploring the extent to which a number of countries, including Ukraine, played a role in the counterintelligence investigation directed at the Trump campaign during the 2016 election. While the Attorney General has yet to contact Ukraine in connection with this investigation, certain Ukrainians who are not members of the government have volunteered information to Mr. Durham, which he is evaluating," DOJ Spokesperson Kerri Kopek released in a statement.

According to the transcript, President Trump was concerned about Ukraine's role and asked Zelensky to get to the bottom of what happened.

"I would like you to do us a favor though because our country has been through a lot and Ukraine knows a lot about it. I would like you to find out what happened with this whole situation with Ukraine, they say Crowdstrike...I guess you have one of your wealthy people...The server, they say Ukraine has it. There are a lot of things that went on, the whole situation," Trump said on the call. "I would like to have the Attorney General call you or your people and I would like you to get to the bottom of it. As you saw yesterday, that whole nonsense ended with a very poor performance by a man named Robert Mueller, an incompetent performance, but they asay a lot of it started with Ukraine. Whatever you can do, it's very important that you do it if that's possible."

Asked for comment, Crowdstrike released the following statement:

"With regards to our investigation of the DNC hack in 2016, we provided all forensic evidence and analysis to the FBI. As we stated before, we stand by our findings and conclusions that have been fully supported by the US Intelligence Community".

Sorry, within the factual context of the "transcript" that question does not call for a YES or NO.

Is it an abuse of power to request that Ukraine cooperate with the investigation into the Crowdstrike server and the counterintelligence investigation that USA Durham is doing? No.

Is it an abuse of power to request that Ukraine look into why the investigation into Biden's son was halted by the prior administration? It could very well be, but that depends on why the investigation was halted in the first instance. It certainly is a bad fact for Trump but without knowing more I am not sure it is the resounding "YES" you are looking for.

As it pertains to Biden, to me, Trump was ambiguous as to what he was actually asking for.

It came across as asking to look into why the prosecutor who was investigating Biden was fired. If this is what he was actually asking I'm not seeing much of a problem here.

If Trump was asking for Biden himself to be investigated (presumably by re-opening the investigation that was shut down) then it's potentially a HUGE problem.

I read the transcript twice and it came across as the first scenario I just presented.

The extortion doesn't have to be spelled out said on the call in order for it to be quid pro quo. Don't forget we don't know what Ghouliani said to the Ukranians, but Drumpf in this call is asking them to work with his PERSONAL ATTORNEY! Hence what he's asking for is benefitting him PERSONALLY!

For you Cult45s here's an example of how quid pro quo works for mobsters like Combover Quisling: I want my dog to roll over. I hold up a Snaussage and say,"roll over." My dog wants the Snaussage and understands that in order to get it he must do what I want, sp he rolls over. I never had to say, "If you want the Snaussage, you must roll over." The same is true of withheld military aid.

Donald Trump has a history of altering transcripts.

#1 | Posted by Zed

This 'transcript' may as well have been drawn in Sharpie.

We'll eventually find out what the full transcript contains. And this is only a partial transcript of one phone call. The whistleblower may have reported on several. Furthermore, we don't even know if the Ukraine meddling is what they reported.

What's also bad is that even Giuliani, along with WH aides, has read the whistleblower complaint but Trump won't provide it to Congress whose duty is oversight of the executive branch, and who have the right to see it. His personal attorney doesn't.

Not a big fan of Adam Schiff, but e sums up the transcript nicely:

-We do a lot for Ukraine
-There's not much reciprocity
-I have a favor to ask
-Investigate my opponent
-My people will be in touch

I realize this doesn't fit on a bumper sticker but can anyone say with a straight face that this was appropriate?

And as Lee the Agent alluded to earlier, mobsters don't say "here's my quid pro quo offer to you..." You just know. Because hey, It's the president of the United States. He wants me to do a favor for him. He's mentioned this more than once. It must be important.

The quid pro quo was implied. Definition of the term:

Quid pro quo ("something for something" in Latin) is a Latin phrase used in English to mean an exchange of goods or services, in which one transfer is contingent upon the other; "a favour for a favour". Phrases with similar meanings include: "give and take", "--- for tat", and "you scratch my back, and I'll scratch yours".

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Trump reportedly told the acting White House chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, to hold the funds, which the US had provided in light of Ukraine's conflicts with pro-Russian separatists.

- Officials informed congressional leaders that the two-month pause was due to an "interagency process," The Post reported.

- Trump has denied holding up the funds to pressure President Volodymyr Zelensky's government to investigate former US Vice President Joe Biden. But he appeared to acknowledge on Monday that the aid package was on his mind during the July 25 phone call.

Why no takes on the mentioned "servers of treason"??

There are 3 different servers of significance to the 2016 election and democrat corruption.
1. Hillary's home server that hosted her email account.
2. DNC server that had its cyber security services performed by Crowdstrike. DNC refused to turn the server over to FBI after they accused Russia of hacking after Seth Rich leaked their emails to Julian Assange. FBI took Crowdstrike's word that it was a Russian hack.
3. Democratic congressional server that was exploited by Imran Awan and Debbie Wasserman for the purpose blackmail and selling secrets to foreign intelligence.

The conversation with Ukrainian President was about #2 above.

#315 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2019-09-25 05:34 PM

I call it providing evidence to law enforcement.
You call it providing dirt.
I guess this is where we're at. People who want to see law enforcement getting the information needed to investigate wrongdoing by anyone see it my way.
People who see providing evidence of democrat's wrongdoing is 'providing dirt' will certainly agree with you.

There is a huge, glaring quid pro quo in the memo. Or should I say a quid pro "though"?

President Zelenskyy: .... We are ready to continue to cooperate for the next steps specifically we are almost ready to buy more Javelins from the United States for defense purposes.

The President: I would like you to do us a favor though....

This is an unquestionable quid pro quo. Zelenskyy states that he wants to buy more US-supplied Javelin missiles for Ukraine. In the very next sentence Trump asks for a "favor" and then adds though, linking what's coming next to the request that Zelensky just made. If Trump hadn't have added the 'though' he could plausibly argue that his next thoughts were unconnected to Zelensky's request.

Everyone knows what this sentence means. Kid: I want to go to the mall. Mom: I'd like you to do me a favor though, and clean out your filthy room.

"Though" absolutely ties what follows it back to the request made in the prior sentence.

Clearly, this is a quid pro though.

I encourage it, at least from the whiners. People who whine about a person are looking for attention and validation and as noted in the link below, refuse to accept any solutions. They have mental issues and if they would just admit that to themselves and plonk, they would be doing themselves a favor.

The second type of complaint is the familiar "venting." Venting is expressing emotional dissatisfaction. It turns out that people who vent have an agenda. They tend to be focused on themselves and their own"presumably negative"experience. By showing their anger, frustration, or disappointment, they are soliciting attention from their confidantes. They can feel validated by receiving attention and sympathy. Venters are particularly likely to discount advice and proposed solutions to their problems. They aren't looking to solve anything; they simply want validation.

Speed bump for Trump; the end of a political career for Biden. The Progressive wing of the Dem party was already on board with impeachment, and now the centrists are rising up to bolster their man Joe. Biden is DOA which actually breathes life to the Sanders campaign for old white guy votes versus Warren. Somewhere around 37% of the electorate like those policies - pie in the sky as they are. Buckle up buckaroos. Get your safe spaces, emotional support animals and crying towels ready.
