Michael A. Cohen: Trump should of course step down. He should have done it a long time ago. It's not a close call. Stating that publicly is not an example of partisan bomb-throwing, rather it's the precise opposite: a principled recognition that some things are more important than politics.

But with Trump, the lack of resignation calls almost certainly has more to do with the fact that everyone knows he'd never do it. Why bother making an ask that will just be cited by Republican as evidence of partisan intent and ignored?

Here's one reason: A call for resignation is a statement of principle that Trump's actions so clearly violate the public trust that his position in office has become untenable. It's an acknowledgment that the president has lost his moral standing and must do the right thing and surrender power. Perhaps above all, it's drawing a line in the sand and saying that this behavior is egregious and there's only one right course of action for the president.

When you have a president so completely immune from shame; and when he is enabled by a political party so infected by partisanship that "winning" is more important than acknowledging wrongdoing and holding leaders accountable, the idea of a selfless political act has become almost laughably antiquated.

Perhaps the most dispiriting element of the whistle-blower's complaint is that multiple individuals around the president " all of whom swore an oath to uphold the Constitution " appear to have understood he committed a grave abuse of power, and then went to great lengths to cover it up. The heroism of the whistle-blower is sadly matched by the cowardice of Trump's enablers.

I think he will. He does not like being president IMO. He was as surprised as everyone else when he got elected. The only reason he ran is because his huge ego thought it would be cool to have 'presidential candidate' on his resume and in the history books. Well he got one better -- the presidency itself.

Now that his ego has been satisfied, he will be OK with stepping back out of the political spotlight.

Trump will never resign his mental illness prevents logical behavior like that.

He will, once it becomes undeniable that more than 67 US Senators will vote to convict him in the Senate trial. The GOP has to force him out at that point or he can utterly destroy the party by continuing to fight the inevitable.

I'd even say if that point is ever reached and Trump refuses to go, the GOP will orchestrate a 25th Amendment crisis and remove him themselves.

Again, IF critical mass confirming his eventual conviction is reached, the GOP has no alternative other than to let Trump take the party down in flames when he goes.

Being a egotistical narcissist yourself I would have thought you would understand that Trump is not in control of his own Ego and Trump's Ego would never allow for him to just fade away. Trump has to see himself on TV for Trump to be happy. It took him five years to admit to lying about Obama's birthplace. And even now he has revered back to those lies.

Trump has had a taste of power. And as we all should know by now, power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

And this man Trump is absolutely corrupted.

And so is anything he touches. And once he does not have the protection of that power Trumps legal future is not very bright.

Trump will not resign UNLESS he is given assurances that he will not be prosecuted for his crimes. The only person that can guarantee that he won't be prosecuted is Mike Pence. Will Pence do for Trump what Ford did for Nixon? I don't think so. Pence would love to be POTUS but I think he would like to be president for more than a year. If he pardoned Trump, the public would turn on him just as they turned on Ford. Furthermore, Pence would not have the enthusiastic support of Trump supporters and they wouldn't turn out for him as they turned out for Trump.

That's only federal crimes. NY state is not going to drop their investigations. Trump is going to be indicted at minimum for his role in the crime Michael Cohen is serving time for because NY will file charges the second he's no longer President.

The "transcript" sets up a prima facia case.

And to break it down further,

52 U.S. Code 30121.Contributions and donations by foreign nationals

(a)Prohibition It shall be unlawful for - ...

(2)a person to solicit, accept, or receive a contribution or donation described in subparagraph (A) or (B) of paragraph (1) from a foreign national.

Trump asking for a favor broke the law. It doesn't matter why he did it, or if one believes the ask to be a quid pro quo or not.

The ask alone expressly violated the law.

Obamacare = Romneycare = Republican healthcare "reform".

Yes, the ACA was better than the zero accountability in the healthcare industry before 2010, but it's still what Republicans wanted and preferred before President Blackenstein was inaugurated in 2009 -- which all makes you a right-wing hack.

The Republicans' anti-impeachment is a triple Catch 22: You can't impeach if it's not a crime. You can't investigate the President for a crime. You can't hold us to legal definitions because impeachment is a political, not legal proceeding.

My crystal balls tells me that more phone calls will come to light, a more thorough investigation (by the media and by Congress) will draw attention to all sorts of efforts by IPBoS to seek foreign aid in 2020 followed by stonewalling and nonsense from IPBoS and his lackeys in the Senate, subpoenas will be issued and ignored, IPBoS will refuse to provide any subpoenaed documents, impeachment will go nowhere, IPBoS will get reelected-because Republicans cheat, IPBoS's second term will have unfathomable corruption, a financial crisis and at the end of his term IPBoS will take the White House towels, soaps, fixtures and plumbing with him.
