Diahann Carroll, who pioneered television with her starring role in the 1968 series "Julia," died Friday, her publicist Jeffrey Lane confirmed to CNN. Carroll was 84.

Julia was the first TV program that had a black lead that was not a domestic. Still it is extremely campy and short on plot. But it was a first, one can see it was written by and for a white audience.
