Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, October 07, 2019

A federal judge on Monday rejected a bold argument from President Trump that sitting presidents are immune from criminal investigations, allowing the Manhattan district attorney's office to subpoena eight years of the president's personal and corporate tax returns. In a 75-page ruling, Judge Marrero said called president's argument "repugnant to the nation's governmental structure and constitutional values." Presidents, their families and businesses are not above the law, the judge ruled.

The president and his lawyers have fought vigorously to shield his tax returns, which Trump said during the 2016 campaign that he would make public but has since refused to disclose.

"Why? Because it's with something you agree with?"

How about because no one is above the law? If you want a King then say so.

"repugnant to the nation's governmental structure and constitutional values."

That is Fat Nixon's entire legacy.

Why?

Because they argued that Fat Nixon could not be investigated for crimes while in office basically arguing he is above the law.

Where are all the Trumpublican Constitutional scholars to rip this judge without actually reading his ruling?

The first tax return he refused to release until the audit was over is now out of statute. If there ever was an audit, it's long over.

Trump told us his tax returns are beautiful and that he hopes they get released. It would be unfair to him and to us to prevent it from happening.

Sniper had pre-existing ignorance, long before trump.

If any trumpians had any intelligence, we could talk about the magna Carta.

That was where the original idea of 'no one is above the law' came from.

Trump is working within the framework of the law.

He quite literally argues in this case that he is above any criminal laws.

But knowing that would require you to read, which we all know is too much to ask.

He was never under audit.

It was just another lie from Conjob Don and it doesn't explain why 2017, 2018 or 2019 was not released.

Conjob Don sues to keep his school records hidden.

Conjob Don refuses to release the full Mueller report.

Conjob Don refuses to release his tax returns.

Why? Because he has nothing to hide.

You're making the assertion, back it up.

Or just acknowledge that even Fox has enough of a soul to admit, on air, that Trump is committing criminal acts.

... a bold argument from President Trump that sitting presidents are immune from criminal investigations ...

I'm currently thinking that Pres Trump chose that particular argument because he wants to be sure to have a case that the Supreme Court will accept for its docket.

Maybe, but worst case scenario is it makes him immune to criminal charges. I don't think investigations will be stopped. I get stopping civil cases against Presidents related to their jobs but not other cases that are unrelated. Criminal cases? If you are a felon you should be held to account and forced to resign.

"Above the law my foot! It's a fishing expedition."

That means above the law. The law makes no exceptions for fishing expeditions.

#30 | Posted by Danforth at 2019-10-08 12:32 AM | Reply

The law makes no exceptions for fishing expeditions.

Uh, wrong. Civil and criminal rules of procedure provide some fishing is permissible but wholesale expeditions are not.

"Civil and criminal rules of procedure provide some fishing is permissible"

When the salient phrase is "shall" turn over the returns, there is nothing in the wording about exceptions.

"wholesale expeditions are not."

Math alone suggests probable cause.

The authorities that investigate tax related crimes already have them - are you admitting the government is so incompetent that they can't find wrongdoing but internet expert like Doucheforth is going to?
