Just over half of public school students who took the state's standardized English language arts test performed at grade level, while only 4 in 10 are proficient in math, scores that represent a slow upward trend over the past four years, according to data released Wednesday by the state Department of Education. Proficiency rates rose about 1 percentage point each in both English and math between 2018 and 2019, with 50.9% of students meeting English standards and 39.7% of students meeting math standards on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, designed to test Common Core concepts. However, scores among African American students are markedly lower, prompting calls from educators to address the achievement gap.

What a surprise that government schools run by teachers' unions are failing.

"Proficiency rates rose about 1 percentage point each in both English and math between 2018 and 2019..."

And it was an increase....

Sad. I believe if parents were more involved in their children's education as they used to be, we wouldn't see dismal numbers like this.

We need better quality teachers as well. Teachers should be paid by merit, not by what the union dictates. Bad teachers should be shown the door, not retained by hiding under a union skirt.

Well these "standars" people they are supposed to meet are probably pedos and scare them off.

"Texas is dead last when it comes to passing standards for measuring how well children are reading by the fourth grade, according to a federal analysis of states' standardized tests.

And the passing standards weren't much better in math, with Texas lagging among the bottom of the pack."

Illiteracy can be attributed to the quality of education each school district is getting. IOW, it's not a state controlled thing. The predominately democrat counties have the highest illiteracy rates. Go figure.

I wonder what the numbers in your link would look like if the democratic parts of the state were excluded? And y'all say Republicans hate education. LOL

PS, danni, that was a pretty flimsy attempt at steering the failures of a blue state to a red state. LOL Texas has nothing to do with this thread.

Half the public school students in California don't speak English.

No worries, as it is California, after all.

Goatman doesn't like it when we point out the hypocrisy of the California bashing.

"Half the public school students in California don't speak English."
