Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, will testify to House committees leading the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, defying the State Department's direction not to cooperate.

Finally, someone will tell Donald Trump he can't prevent them from testifying. The other cowards who obeyed Trump are pathetic.

Sondland's fear of Trump's fall is greater than his fear of Trump's wrath.

No courage here, but I'll take it.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch is testifying this morning.

She was ousted when she objected to Giuliani's skullduggery.

Any bets on him "hanging himself"?

I'm not so sure I'd celebrate quite yet, danni.

He might very well have some slick way of saying nothing while avoiding any trouble he could get in for ignoring the subpoena.

The problem with these crooks is that they're driven by greed and self-preservation in that order.

Yovanovitch' opening statement hanged Rudy and Pompeo, IMHO. The first part is setting context. She gets going pages 6-10. It's a short read and worth it:

I think (I hope) Sondland's figured out he could be in deep, deep caca.

I think one of two things is going on:

1. He sees how Drumpf in his effort to blamecast would throw Sondland under the bus in a hot minute just like he has Pence, and will likely do to Ghouliani. Sondland wants to get out early and be on the right side of history, maybe even get some sort of immunity deal for his testimony.

2. As already mentioned he will try to be lawyerly, cast the crimes in Ukraine as just your basic ambassadorial business while defending Combover Quisling.

I'm hoping it will be the former, but I fear it will be the latter.

I just read it.

How sickening that Trump and his cabal sought to undermine our own election system by extorting a newly elected president of Ukraine for dirt on one of Trump's possible opponents.

A newly elected president of the Ukraine who is not only fighting Russia in an ongoing war in eastern Ukraine that's already killed 14,000 Ukrainians, but crooks and oligarchs within his own country as he seeks to put an end to the corruption that's held the Ukraine back.

What's he get for trying to do the right thing? Being extorted by a President of The United States and his dirty lawyer doing 'shadow diplomacy,' and getting the honest former U.S. Ambassador recalled at just the time her services were needed most. The whole affair is sickening.

Yovanovitch's Opening Statement (and closed session testimony) set the tone for the truth.

Sondland must know this by now. Option 1 is his best course of action; tell the truth, immunity or not. Anything but the truth from him will earn him a felony conviction in the long run.

I'm curious about precedent on this, on both sides:
The President ordering a diplomat to refuse to cooperate, and diplomats ignoring that order.
Don't remember hearing about this, but if Obama ever did it I'm sure someone will let us know!

Sondland is a million dollar Trump donor and loyalist. I expect him to try and spin the facts into the narrative the Trumpers want to create. When they ask him about texts and documents he's going to say "Sorry, the State Department has that stuff, can't share it with you."

The only way to get the real truth out of him will likely be through yes/no questions to facts/circumstances already in evidence thus confirming the obvious pictures.

Color me surprised if it goes any other way.

That's probably the most honest thing you've said on this site in years.

One thing is for sure, no one will ever accuse Corky of being smart. Or witty.

No one will ever accuse you of being anything other than a rather pathetic excuse for a Trump Troll.

It is entirely the job of the committee members to write well thought out questions which would force Sondland to tell them the truth of what happened or face perjury indictment. Probably need some experienced prosecutors to write those questions for them.
