Dana Milbank: President Trump has proved to the 21st century that Lord Acton's 19th-century maxim still holds: Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Trump began staking his title to absolute power in his first weeks in office. "The whole world will soon see, as we begin to take further actions, that the powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial and will not be questioned," White House adviser Stephen Miller announced. He wasn't kidding.

Trump soon stated that "I have the absolute right" to fire FBI Director JamesComey. He subsequently proclaimed the "absolute right" to provide Russia with an ally's highly classified intelligence; the "absolute right" to pardon himself; the "absolute right" to shut down the southern border; the "absolute right" to fire special counsel Robert Mueller; the "absolute right" to sign an executive order removing the Constitution's birthright-citizenship provision; the "absolute right" to contrive a national emergency to deny Congress the power of the purse; the "absolute right" to order U.S. businesses out of China; the "absolute right" to release apparent spy-satellite imagery of Iran; and, most recently, the "absolute right" to ask other countries to furnish evidence that Joe Biden is corrupt.

Kellyanne Conway asserted Trump's "absolute right" to give his son-in-law a security clearance over security professionals' objections. White House counsel Pat Cipollone said current and former White House officials are "absolutely immune" from testifying before Congress. As others have noted, Trump has repeatedly said the Constitution's Article II empowers him "to do whatever I want" and bestows on him "all of these rights at a level nobody has ever seen before."

At a level nobody has ever seen. Now we see the corrupting effect of this claim of own absolute power.

There's a very important lesson to be learned through this horrid experience. Hopefully we'll still have a country worth having once we get through it.

Democracy Dies in Darkness. Just remember that when you want to launch a camapaign against, say, a Commander in Chief who singlehandedly destroys a leading African nation like Libya, thereby opening the floodgates of immigrants into Europe and also creating the circumstances in which the human slave trade could flourish. Oh, the humanity! Impeach!

On 19 March 2011, a multi-state NATO-led coalition began a military intervention in Libya, ostensibly to implement United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973. The United Nations' intent and voting was to have "an immediate ceasefire in Libya, including an end to the current attacks against civilians, which it said might constitute crimes against humanity ... imposing a ban on all flights in the country's airspace " a no-fly zone " and tightened sanctions on the [Muammar] Gaddafi regime and its supporters." en.wikipedia.org
Never listen to ignorant morons who lie about common facts. They are the scourge of an informed people and should be voluntarily excised from polite conversation for their intentional dishonesty.

Especially when they use lies to distract or distort from topics that have nothing to do with the issue at hand.

TONY, the man is just mouthing words. Who knows if he believes them? What he believes in is Trump, and in Trump the Dictator.

#5 | Posted by Zed at 2019-10-12 08:38 AM | Reply

The simple fact is that some millions of Americans have decided that a dictatorship is what they want over what they have.

That they have elevated the mind numbing cabbage head Trump to be King of Kings we'll leave to the scholars you can tell they are aching to execute.

#6 | Posted by Zed at 2019-10-12 08:42 AM | Reply

Actually, I think one reason they've settled on obvious idiot Trump to be god is that they aren't sure when the next time is they will be this close to installing a dictator.

#7 | Posted by Zed at 2019-10-12 09:08 AM | Reply

To an extent, I disagree Zed. Trump is an aberration. He's never run for any political office before POTUS and is obvious ignorant and dismissive of the US Constitution. His natural instincts honed from Roy Cohn and all his years running his personal business without anything approaching oversight has now been supercharged with the immense powers given our President with the caveat they are only to be used for the benefit of the nation and its faithful adherence to the rules and laws which keep its order.

As we know, Trump is incapable of approaching any issue from outside the perspective of what he personally stands to gain or lose in the interaction, with adherence to norms, rules, and laws tertiary (if even that high) to his own goals and desires. Trump as POTUS is the perfect storm of self-serving authoritarianism meeting unrestricted power in a system based upon an executive enforcing laws instead of using LEO to shield it from them (which again violates his oath of office).

Throw in a person unbothered by stoking racism, xenophobia, and economic anxiety to amplify the obvious fears of his base of a changing world that neither their minds nor consciousness' are wanting to deal with, and here is where we are. Trumpism could never be as effective in any other political position within our constitutional republic but for the presidency. Even if his supporters never intended to elevate a dictator, and dispassionate view of Trump's checkered past should have revealed that he would be nothing less if given the power enshrined to the Presidency combined with his complete obsession with his own self interests.

Trump has the absolute right to remain silent...

I saw a cute little meme about how Trump wants to meet the whistleblower but still won't meet any of the women that have accused him of sexual assault.

A co-dictatorship? World-wide freedom to rampage and pillage? Enormous power and wealth?

"What does Pompeo and Barr expect to get out of all this?"

I don't remember the name of the book that I heard about a week k or so ago. The author's premise is that Russia, Saudi Arabia, China, Philipines, and the U.S. under Trump are planning an alliance which will pretty much rules the world and turn everything into oligarchy. I would imagine position such as Sec. of State and AG would be valuable positions to be in if that happens.

I don't recall where I heard it the other day, likely from Natasha Bertrand so a great source, but apparently Pompeo believes he's going to be POTUS someday.

Who let the idiot out of his cage?

Obama - 8yrs in office. zero criminal indictments, zero convictions and zero prison sentences. so the next time somebody describes the Obama administration as "scandal free" they aren't speaking wishfully, they're simply telling the truth.

Bush, George W. - 8yrs in office. 16 criminal indictments. 16 convictions. 9 prison sentences.

Clinton - 8yrs in office. 2 criminal indictments. one conviction. one prison sentence. that's right nearly 8yrs of investigations. tens of millions spent and 30yrs of claiming them the most corrupt ever and there was exactly one person convicted of a crime.

Bush, George H. W. - 4yrs in office. one indictment. one conviction. one prison sentence.

Reagan - 8yrs in office. 26 criminal indictments. 16 convictions. 8 prison sentences.

Untrue. See link in post 15 Or look at this one:

In all, over the past decade, Obama has been mentioned in the context of scandal a total of 6,520 times on the three news channels, compared with 5,103 times for Trump. Though that comparison includes nearly eight years of Obama's presidency vs. less than three years for Trump, the numbers make clear that the former's tenure was not "scandal free." Comparing the first three years of Obama's second term to the first three years of Trump's presidency, Obama received 69% as many scandal mentions as Trump.

"It was disputing the claims that there were no scandals during the Obama years."

Easy to dispute.
One man's scandal is another man's tan suit.
Thus, for some, the Obama administration was chock full of scandals.
And similarly, for others, who consider scandals to be "criminal indictments, convictions and prison sentences," of which the Obama administration had zero, the Obama administration was scandal-free.

""Produce the post where I denied global warming, snoofy."

No need.
You're already looking at it: "I know what thread you are referring to, snoofy. And it's still active. I have it in another tab."

More snoofygames (tm)

You are wrong. I'm not looking at the post. I didn't say I was. As I said, I am looking at the thread Reading is fundamental. I said I know what thread it was on. I know this because you kept badgering me with questions about global warming and trying to get me to say it doesn't exist, and I wouldn't take your bait. So yes, I know the thread, but there is no post on it where I denied global warming, in spite of your insistence that I do so. If you think I am wrong, show me the post.

Let me help you. Here's the thread. Now show me the post where I denied global warming. Or be a man and admit you lied. Obviously it will have to be the latter since I never made the claim you said I did.

You should help keep your team in check and this wouldn't happen. Snoofy is one of the worst on this site at twisting words and as in this case just flat out lying. Someone needs to hold him accountable for what he says.

Sorry you don't like to see your team's feet being held to the fire, but I'm tired of snoofy playing this game and getting away with it. So yes, I am going to hold him accountable for his lies. Sorry if that distresses you, but feel free to plonk me, because I will not allow snoofy to get away with it.

Go ahead. YOU ask snoofy why he said what he said. And if he doesn't truthfully answer, admonish him for his dishonesty. And if can produce the post in question, come down on me.
Otherwise, spare me your faux outrage.

These are only the posts on the first page of the Comments section where GOATMAN's accusing someone of lying:

I presume the Hans deflection was a tacit admission of you lying. Right?

I can find no instance of what snoofy says. So I guess he lied.
Snoofy sure is lucky to have you on his side!

But if you don't, you'll always have brucebanner to support you in your dishonesty. So there's that. Sadly for him it drags his credibility, but that's neither here nor there.
Posted by goatman at 2019-10-13 06:27 PM

Your best bet is to admit you lied.
Posted by goatman at 2019-10-13 06:33 PM

You know, snoofy, I can't understand the mind set that knows something isn't true, yet spends as much time as you do trying to convince another person he did it.
I'm not a shrink, but I can't help but to think there is something horribly wrong with the mental functions of a person who does engage in such bahaviour. I'm pretty sure it would fall under self deception which I do know is not healthy at all.
I hope you overcome this, snoofy.

I think he has a thirst for corporate and financial power, but I don't think he has a thirst or the stomach for political power. I don't think he expected to win the election and was probably a little disappointed he did.

#22 | Posted by goatman

I think he enjoys political power most of all.

He prepared for this for years. He remains focused on his campaign promises -- renegotiate NAFTA, renogiate terms with China, renogiate terms with the EU, pulled out of the Trans Pacific Partnership, pulled out of the Paris Accord, pulled out of the Iran Deal, recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, put 100 billion dollars into urban economic zones, got 2 supreme court justices and possibly more, has filled nearly 200 federal judgeships, he survived the farce of the Steele Dossier and the Mueller Report, on and on, doing what he set out to do. Unemployment at historic lows for all groups. Economic growth that Obama and the Dems said was impossible.

I take it at face value that he is enduring all the -------- out of love of country and a genuine love for the fight. He is pretty good on offense, and is an incredible counter puncher. The media has been in the tank against him from the beginning, but he communicates his message on his terms.

Those who think he is their fool get the worst end of the bargain over and over.

Where do you see a man that is disappointed to have the job?

I see a man that could have done anything, but works constantly at the job of being President because he loves the job more than anything in the world.

Global warming is an existential threat to our way of life, and to millions if not billions of actual human lives.

I've spun nothing. I stand by my words as written. You clearly spin them, though.

Anyway, you aren't well, snoofy. It is beyond bizarre that you continue to try to convince me i said something I didn't, even to the point of posting my words proving what i said and telling me that my opinion that global warming hasn't been proven is a denial that it exists.

I honestly don't understand what you get out of this blatant twisting of words game you play, snoofy.

Just take my words as written. That's all I expect of anyone. And if you can't can't sow me where I denied global warming, your assertion is still a lie, just as it was yesterday.

Deal with it

We don't need to go through anything again. You will never convince me I said something I didn't.

But if your little show is for the benefit of other readers of the DR, that's up to you. We have some dense ones here, but you may be able to convince them of your claim. And someone that dense deserves a liar like you. But anyone with a brain, no matter what side of the aisle they are on or how much they despise me knows you haven't shown the post where I claimed I denied global warming.

So what is your goal? To convince me I said something I didn't? Don't bother. You won't. Or are you trying to convince other readers who saw your game playing all last night? Go for it, but I don't think they'll appreciate you doing it again.
