This story doesn't pass the smell test. Three days without formula and the baby is still alive? Breast milk? OK. how did she suddenly start lactating? How does one accidentally drive across the border avoiding an animal? Big ---- animal, I guess. Detained in Pennsylvania, 2,000 miles away when the occurance happened near Vancouver (that's north of Seattle) Theree are actually border roads not secured with agents, or at least a gate if it's not manned?

Smells fine from here and fits this administration. I don't see Border Patrol issuing comment to refute their statements. This offense is akin to a speeding ticket legally.

Yes there are border roads like that. It's Canada and even Mexico used to have them. Apparently it was manned since they were stopped... There's thousands of miles of un-fenced border even - again it's Canada.

Yes there are large animals like that in the area. Deer, Moose, Bears, etc. I personally wouldn't turn down a road to avoid them but I'm not British either.

Article didn't say she was using formula solely as it is an infant I would go with yes breast milk. Don't be a tool.

"Yes there are large animals like that in the area. Deer, Moose, Bears, etc. I personally wouldn't turn down a road to avoid them but I'm not British either."

Yes, I know there are huge animals like that there. I was being facetious and talkng about miles long animals.

I mean, you dodge a moose -- takes you a few feet off course and because of that you unknowingly cross the border? C'mon. Don't tell me the border isn't marked (even though it's a remote road) because there is no way they would be detained for three days and sent to Pennsylvania for accidentally crossing an unmarked border, no matrter how ------ up you think Trump is. Even for Trump, this is incredulous.

And wouldn't 3 month baby without its formula for 3 days die? It's not like a woman can start breast feeding on command. Lactation stops pretty quickly after there is no suckling. And if she was lactating all along and breast milk kept the baby alive, what's the unnecessary and melodramatic reference to "no formula"? And on those lines, why did the officials feed the parents, but not give the baby any food? You blindly accept all this? What happened to critical thinking?

And being taken from northwest Washington state to Pennsylvania? You don't question that? Not necessarily question whether it happened, but if it did, why?

Um, OK. It looks like you are cool with these "plot holes" because of what you say in the first sentence of your post. Trump.

Maybe these weird things all did happen, but if they did, there is more to the story than being told.

And as far as denial? It's the official policy of these agencies to neither confirm nor deny these reports. So their lack of denial -- aside from being a logical fallacy 'proving' a fact -- is irrelevant. That's especially true if there is more to the story as I think there is.

Wouldn't you know it? There's a lot more to the story:

U.S. officials are disputing the truthfulness of Connors' claim that they crossed the border accidentally.

Customs and Border Protection said Tuesday that surveillance video showed the car "slowly and deliberately driving through a ditch" into Washington state.

CBP added that two of the family members had previously been denied travel authorization to the U.S after applying for visa waivers which are available to British passport holders.

An official told The Washington Post that the two families had $16,000 in cash on them when they were arrested. The CPB official added that Canada refused to re-accept them.

Canada refused to re-accept them.

Two of the family members had previously been denied travel authorization to the U.S after applying for visa waivers which are available to British passport holders.

The two families had $16,000 in cash on them when they were arrested.

Surveillance video showed the car "slowly and deliberately driving through a ditch" into Washington state.

Tell me about the gist of the challenge!

#77 | Posted by snoofy

Yes, by all means possible, let's spark that gap.

The first part of the challenge is to read vary carefully -- the words. Then enact the details, as closely as you can.

Apply for a visa exemption to Canada, get denied, and go ahead anyways and drive into Canada across that very same ditch in this story, with $16,000 cash on you.

Report back how Canada holds you to their bosom. If you pass my challenge you get a free bowl of soup.

I recommend you stay away from the Connor's attorney -- the one that wrote the letter to the Washington Post that the BBC picked up. That attorney will make you a laughingstock.

Well, more of a laughingstock.

Looks good on you, though.

Question, big guy:

Yav was clearly shown to be wrong. He supported the criminals and blamed America. I said I believed the Connor's story was fabricated. I said it didn't sound plausible and listed my reasons why. 'Notch proved the Connors lied. Yav jerked his knee and called me an idiot for questioning the holes in the story.

So why do you throw your lot with yav? I used critical thinking to come to my conclusion. Yav used his hate of America to come to his. (see post 11) In fairness to yav, even though he didn't say so, he was indirectly blaming Trump. Still inexcusable, of course.

Rhetorical question, of course. Like all hyperpartisans, you put party over truth. And you and Yav are both democrats. That's shameful. Of course you have a long history of that, so it's expected. That makes it even more shameful. But it will be another thing to sport my case when I accuse you of being party over truth in the future.

I came back earlier just to point out what part of the sentence was relevant, and why I thought it gave the story credibility.
I didn't make any statement as to what's been discovered since, or what actors were being truthful.

Given how Iran kept US citizens for years for the same thing, and given I used to live in Maine on the border and used to go back and forth all the time through the woods, I gave these folks the benefit of the doubt. We had quite a few experiences up there that sound like they'd be deadly these days.

Do I trust ICE? Oh hell no. Not in this age of Trump. Not with the blatant lies they've been caught in. Do I believe these folks? Not that much given what's come to light.

But am I glad this has kept Dix and Goat busy?

Check the time stamps on my first two posts and you'll see that it took me five minutes, not five hours to find the real story:

Some of the usual suspects are pretending not to understand what a smell test is.
Sad affair. Bless hearts.
What country's border do "we" think we can cross illegally without being detained?

#21 | Posted by DixvilleNotch at 2019-10-15 07:23 PM

and

#22 | Posted by DixvilleNotch at 2019-10-15 07:28 PM

One would reasonably think that the Daily News account of the CBP disputing the Connors' claim would have shifted the conversation into the light and brought it to a mercifil end. Instead, biased retorters doubled, tripled and quadrupled down without bothering to read and comprehend.

When last seen, Snoofy still had no idea what hit him.

But sure, blame me and Goatie, for the 5 hours (and still ongoing) of total, blackhole density of our fellow posters.

Here's a nugget for those diligent Retorters who want still more insight into the Connor Affair.

After giving Mrs. Connor and child a night at a Red Roof Inn, ICE was arranging to release the Connor family into the US to a relative who had agreed to sponsor them.

Something quickly went wrong with the US relative's sponsorship arrangement, although the Connor's attorney makes no mention of these details.

When the sponsored release fell through, that's when the Connor family was transferred to the family detention center in Pennsylvania. It is one of 3 such facilities for families in the US, the other 2 being along the Southern Border.

He was working in the United States without authorization.
He was returned to his country of origin, expeditiously.
I think that was the right thing to do.

These people were simply present in the United States without authorization; not even working.
Based on what we know, why was expeditious return to country of origin the wrong thing to do?

"When the sponsored release fell through, that's when the Connor family was transferred to the family detention center in Pennsylvania."

If saying in the Red Roof Inn was acceptable for one night, it is acceptable for indefinite nights.
But instead, taxpayers bought them pointless flight tickets to somewhere other than back home, and a much more costly pointless detention.

No,
I brought up toothbrushes as an example of us denying mistreatment, while affirming in court that the detainees we claim we are not mistreating are not being given toothbrushes and soap.
That could just as easily apply to baby formula; for example, you would argue it's not mistreatment for us to withhold formula from a baby.

That's why the specifics of our denial matters.

Regarding the confiscation of the baby's formula for three days, I see no corroboration one way or another. The CBP and ICE are generally denying abuse and inhumane conditions.

The mother doesn't gain much credibility complaining that suggesting her baby wear a hat to help keep warm is unacceptably inhumane:

"My baby can't wear a hat all the time, he feels uncomfortable with hats and mittens and starts to cry."

Fits right into your milieu, don't it Snoof?

Actually you have, but i won't argue the point because its moot. This story is about some people knowingly entering the country illegally and getting caught. Trump had nothing to do with it. Nor does he have anything to do with the fact that they were denied visas beforre. Nor is it Trump's or ICE's fault that the Canadians won't take them.

The peripheral stuff? Who cares? But it's like them cashing in on stories they heard about detention facilities on the southern border and thought they could exploit that angle. Only thing is the that the place they got sent to in Pennsylvania has consistently had vvery high ratings. I doubt if they suddenly dropped their standards for thes folks.

I blame them being UK citizens who have been denied visas to enter the US, who used Canada as a middle country. That's why Canada reported they won't 'take them back' because they don't belong in Canada.

Also, as noted, they were going to be released to a US relative who agreed to sponsor them, but that fell through for unspecified reasons.

Remains to be seen.

Using Canada as a point of entry complicated their deportation.

Having been denied visa exemptions previously might affect their case.

Smuggling more than $10,000 across the border might affect their case.

Something seems to have gone wrong with their US relative that was going to sponsor them. Maybe they face a lot of fines?

Maybe it turns out they are criminals for more than just the points surrounding their illegal entry.

ICE doesn't comment on ongoing cases, or so they say.

So, for now we have only the Connor's side of the story which appears to be full of ----.

Where the hell is the common sense in this affair? The family were not trying to sneak across the border, they were lost. Probably drove in on a logging road.

The UK are our closest allies. Why add this to the bad feelings over the U.S. diplomat's wife killing a kid and getting off on diplomatic immunity. Then, of course, Trump pulling a Jerry Springer on them at the WH?

This administration is the 'gang who can't shoot straight.' They've pissed off our allies while Trump cozies up to autocrats and dictators.

A couple that is denied entry into the US, isn't allowed into Canada "accidentally" crosses the border? Right. As you ask, AU, wheres the common sense.

They are carrying 16,000 dollars. Sure, who doesn't when they are taking a leisurely drive along the border? Where is the common sense..

The couple lies about the facilities as the one in Pennsylvania has always received top marks for their facilities. Where is the common sense, indeed.

They say that their baby was denied formula for three days, but the adults were fed? People believe this? Again, as you ask AU, where is the common sense?

"The UK are our closest allies. "

And? This means we have to coddle their criminals and just a blind eye to their lawbreaking? Why?

And of course Americanunity predictibly blames Trump for these people breaking the law. It gets old, dude. Come up with a new song and dance, and ne that makes sense.

Wonder if the feds kept their money? Isn't it illegal to transport that much cash across the border without declaring it?

And I wonder how they got into Canada? It couldn't have been legally if Canada refused them entry coming back.

And why any of this? Were they drug smugglers? Human traffickers? Really like the Mariners? What was their motive?

This is such a strange story. But it's Trump's fault, dontcha know?

We can make some true statements on our own though. At least I can.

Border Patrol and ICE are Federal.

Weed is not legal on the Federal level.

Impaired driving is illegal.

Impaired driving with children in the car is child endangerment.

So, there are relevant questions to ask. Then we would know how crossing the border ilegally with weed and children works, right?
