U.S. retail sales unexpectedly posted the first decline in seven months, suggesting consumers are starting to become shaky as the main pillar of economic growth and potentially bolstering the case for a third straight Federal Reserve interest-rate cut.

So. You read the headline "U.S. Retail Sales Unexpectedly Drop" and you conclude it's because people are busy getting ready for Christmas.

Guess people are saving up for Christmas this year.

Besides, our present is the bill to supplement the tax cut for the rich.

Merry Christmas!

Why not just call it "Pseudo Consumer Confidence Benchmark Day" and be done with it?

Are the deals on Black Friday really any better than can be had on the internet? It seems that cyber sales will always have an advantage over bo stores since they don't have the overhead.

In store sales are pretty good on cheap stuff since the idea is to get rid of old inventory and make room for Christmas stock. Sale prices on quality stuff don't change much.

It seems that cyber sales will always have an advantage over bo stores since they don't have the overhead.

Well now they have "Cyber Monday" or whatever they call it. It's kind of insane.

But, as I mentioned, it's a bellwether of economic activity that gets analyzed to oblivion.

That makes sense. I guess I never looked at Black Friday as a vehicle for retailers to dump their old stuff.

Thread successfully hijacked by... Goatman.

This thread is about how consumerism is slowing down.

Mostly due to the fact Americans have less money to spend.

But here we got everyone talking about Christmas and racism and gender identity and why companies have sales.

Pretty much any thing other than the topic of this thread.

Congratulations

You've truly shht all over the DR.

Same thing happened to me. I usually click on a few Victoria Secret links so that they plant a cookie in my PC and I see women's lingerie ads all the time. That has worked for months -- maybe years. But lately I'm getting ads for things I don't have cookies for like the men's underwear and shaving stuff (I have a foot long beard and haven't shaved since I was 19) I haven't cleared my cookies, so I don't know what happened Maybe rcade got an exclusive contract with a men's underwear outfit

I still go to the mall, was there the other day, but I've never gone shopping on Black Friday. Not my thing. Some of my family members have gone Black Friday shopping though, and it was sort of a Thanksgiving holiday tradition for them. When my sister lived in MN and my sister-in-law lived in WI, the two families would have Thanksgiving dinner together, and then the next morning bright and early, sis and sis-in-law would head over to the Mall of American, leaving the kids at home with their dads and lots of leftovers.

That's because you are afflicted with GDS. I've even started pointing out who it is that initiates fights, who goes after whom first, who first derails threads, etc. And it's not me.

But yet, people like you whine about me doing it even though it is your fellow proggies.

You really should pay better attention, Bruce. This thread is a perfect example. Clownshack was the first to go off topic. But who do you whine about? Me. In fact several people have gone off topic with civil discussion about Christmas, malls, and other unrelated topics including lefties and moderates. And you just did, too! But who do you whine about? Me!

Get a life, dude. One that doesn't compel you to obsess over me. Seriously. Get a grip on reality and quit obsessing over me. It's creepy and makes you and your ilk look foolish.

The economy is split between the haves and have-nots.

Economists have no tools to separate them out and help those in need.

So we simply rely on fewer and fewer people to drive economic growth.

At some point they're going to have purchased all they can buy and we're left with a recession.

So we simply rely on fewer and fewer people to drive economic growth.

Which is the inevitable end of our economic model.

Maintaining quarterly growth numbers sufficient to keep --------- investors happy requires squeezing your workers tighter and tighter.

As everybody does this, apparently hoping somebody else will pay enough people enough money to keep consumption high enough, the driving force of the economy was cannibalized for corporate profit.

There is no long term thought or goals in our economy.

More to my point in #6, "our present is the bill to supplement the tax cut for the rich.
Merry Christmas!
#6 | POSTED BY CLOWNSHACK

For the first time, workers are paying a higher tax rate than investors and owners

The proximate cause of the shift was Trump's 2017 tax cut, which dramatically slashed taxes on corporate profits and estates

Most Americans have to work to earn a living. But the rich are different: They get most of their income not from labor but from what they own " companies, stocks, real estate and the like.
These income-generating assets are what economists call capital. And because capital is heavily concentrated among the rich, the U.S. government taxed earnings derived from capital at a higher rate than earnings made through labor for the entirety of the 20th century.
But that's no longer the case, according to economists Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman of the University of California at Berkeley. In their new book, "The Triumph of Injustice," they present data showing that in 2018, labor income was taxed at a higher rate than capital income for the first time in modern U.S. history.

www.washingtonpost.com

The reason people are spending less is that there is less disposable income. Considering America has a consumer based economy, this is bad news for this nation's future.

Unexpected? Only if you are clueless. LMAO - No sheet they dropped. GM's been on strike over a month now. That's JUST GM - then there are the Tier One, Two, three and ancillaries businesses impacted. And I am sure Ford and Chrysler workers are not spending freely at the moment either. All told you are probably impacting maybe 2-3 million workers directly. 10s of millions indirectly and that includes "retail" for sure.
